Little daredevilish in you. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor and this is our western edition. Good evening. The flu is epidemic in this country, and one reason is, the vaccine is not working very well. A canadian study out today found its effective only 17 of the time. Last year here in the u. S. , the flu vaccine was 34 effective. Hospitals right now are struggling to keep up. Here is mark strassmann. At atlantas Grady Memorial Hospital has been overwhelmed by the h3n2 virus. Starting this week, staff have quarantined new flu patients in this separate mobile hospital, typically reserved for disasters like hurricanes. So weve had, you know, id say about a 25 increase, on certain days. Reporter dr. Hany atallah is gradys chief of emergency medicine. We physically just need the space to put a patient in. This is going to help solve g at. Reporter what has not been as helpful as hoped is this years flu vaccine. Canadian researchers reported today that its less than 20 hafective against the flus most dominant strain. In georgia, this flu epidemic has killed 37 people, 25 of them aged 65 or older. In neighboring north carolina, ris state has reported 95 flu deaths. In all, 49 states have reported widespread flu outbreaks, and Health Officials say the flu thasons peak is two to three weeks away. It is a really terrible flu season. Reporter katherine lockler, atfrustrated nurse in pensacola, recorded this youtube flu warning that now has more than three million views. And there is it is a osspool of flu, a cesspool of funky flu at the e. R. Right now. Ou, please dont bring your team in. Please dont bring your healthy children, especially your newborn babies, into the emergency room. Reporter children can be such germ magnets that grady hospital here has banned patient tsits from anyone under the age of 14. And, jeff, georgia Health Officials told us the state ofpects to break its record of 59 flu deaths, and soon. Glor all right, mark, thank you very much tonight. Joining us now, dr. Tara narula, our cbs news medical contributor. A cesspool never sounds good. No, it does not. Glor heed her advice. What do we take away from this report . Right, so, were all looking about, what is the vaccine effectiveness going to be in this country . We have australia, last season, that tells us their vaccine effectiveness against h3n2, the predominant strain, was about 10 . Now canadian data telling us in their interim analysis its r out 10 to 20 . We will have information from the c. D. C. Released in about one to two weeks, that will give us some more stats for whats going on here. Bottom line, we need a better vaccine. We need a universal vaccine. We need better production of the vaccine. Glor but as you know, these low, low, numbers people say, why even get the vaccine . And thats the problem. So, for someone sitting at home right now hearing this, who e snt gotten vaccinated, i iink that would be the wrong wrssage to take away, that i shouldnt get vaccinated because its not effective. Every Public Health official in the c. D. C. Will say theres still benefit. Theres benefit because 17 overall effectiveness is better than nothing. E eres benefit because it can decrease the severity of the symptoms, it can decrease your iosk of complications. T d it can also protect you inainst the other strains, influenza b, and h1n1. So please, get your shot, even if the effectiveness is low. So glor okay, dr. Narula. Thank you very much for being here. There was a School Shooting today, the third in less than two weeks. I. Are objecting. Here is justice correspondent jeff pegues. How much did you like the memo . Reporter the impending release of the memo touched raw nerves as the white house batted ecwn rumors f. B. I. Director Christopher Wray was going to quit in protest. Releasing the information, which is based on classified intelligence, is unusual. It all goes back to president trumps 2016 campaign, when the f. B. I. And the department of justice went to the foreign Intelligence Surveillance court, or fisa court, to approve a warrant to monitor thentrump Campaign Adviser carter page, who was suspected of having illegal contacts with russian operatives. The fourpage memo, authorized by republican congressman devin nunes, outlines alleged surveillance abuses, and it has deepened a severe partisan divide. Democrat adam schiff says it presents a distorted and unfair picture of how the f. B. I. Behaved, and jeopardizes the special counsels russia rdvestigation. They ought to be sending the message instead to the white inuse that, were the president to fire bob mueller or rod rosenstein, that would be considered obstruction of justice, and it would bring down the administration. Reporter House Speaker paul ryan denies its politically motivated. This memo is not indictment p the f. B. I. , of the department of justice. What it is, is the congress legitimate function of oversight to make sure that the fisa process is being used correctly. Reporter whether the f. B. I. Director will go to the mat to prevent the memos release remains an open question. Chris swecker is a former assistant director of the bureau. Director james comey, who was fired by the president , neighed in, tweeting, American History shows that in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field so long as good people stand up. Reporter according to the 2004 Police Report released wednesday, randall told police dhe was scared and uncomfortable after nassar squeezed her breasts and was trying to put his finger in her vagina. Nassar admitted touching randall in the genital area, but claimed to an officer, it was a medical technique, showing him a niwerpoint presentation written by nassar himself. Him and the police instructed my parents that this was a legitimate medical procedure. At that point in time, it should have immediately been taken down to the prosecutors office, and it wasnt. Reporter 12 more years would go by with nassar continuing to sexually abuse young women. I am so hurt to hear that so many women and young girls suffered abuse as a result of the inaction in 2004. Reporter do you think, what if . What if they had just believed me and pursued it . I think what if all the time. I wish i would have gone in there and questioned what the police were telling my parents. Reporter today, one of nassars attorneys was interviewed on a radio station.
