Garrett and, we report from the epicenter of a new Ebola Outbreak, and its in a war zone. Imagine how terrifying this is. You come to be treated, and you could be attacked at any time. Garrett good evening. Im major garrett. This is our western edition. Cbs news has learned tonight a sixth migrant child died after crossing the u. S. Border. An official at the department of health and Human Services told us late today that an unaccompanied tenyearold girl from el salvador died in u. S. Custody in september. Now, before tonight, officials had confirmed the deaths of five Migrant Children since december. The latest death came this week, a boy from guatemala died from the flu. Omar villafranca has more. Reporter cbs news has confirmed that in late 2018, a sixth migrant child died after crossing the u. S. Bord the unaccompanied tenyearold girl from el salvador was in thm the girl had a history of heart problems, and after surgery in a san antonio hospital, complications left her in a coma. She later died in nebraska near her family. The latest confirmed death comes on the heels of another migrant child who died monday after crossing the u. S. Border. We are at the Border Patrol central processing facility in mcallen, texas. This is where 16yearold Carlos Hernandez was processed when he was first apprehended. He spent six days at this facility. But when he was diagnosed with the flu, he was transferred to the weslaco facility more than 20 miles away. The day after he was moved, he was found dead. Back in guatemala, hernandezs mother is still trying to get answers. But there is no information to know how he died. That is what i want to know. And so what i am fighting for is for them to send me the body as soon as possible. Late last night, the Border Patrol stopped taking in new migrants at their mcallen, texas, processing center, after 32 migrants already in custody were diagnosed with the flu. Late this afternoon, the facility resumed processing migrants. Acting Homeland Security secretary Kevin Mcaleenan was grilled by House Democrats on capitol hill today. There was this Tense Exchange with illinois democrat Lauren Underwood on conditions at migrant facilities people keep dying, and so this is obviously more than a question of resources. At this point with five kids that have died, 5,000 separated from their families, i feel like, and the evidence is really clear, that this is intentional. Its intentional. Its a policy choice being made on purpose by this administration, and its cruel and inhumane. Thats an appalling accusation. Our men and women fight hard to evotect people in our custody reporter one of the reasons were just hearing about this childs death from 2018 is that Government Agencies like Border Patrol and ice do not have to publicly report a Child Migrants death. They just have to report it internally to local child agencies. Garrett omar villafranca, thank you. This weeks outbreak of dangerous storms has killed at least four people in oklahoma, iowa, and missouri, and there is no apparent letup. More than 140 tornadoes have been reported since friday. There could be more tonight. The wider threat . Flash floods in areas where rivers are rising. Mireya villarreal is in oklahoma tonight. Reporter homes along the banks of the Cimarron River just north of Oklahoma City are on the brink. One collapsed. Another was swept away by the water. Its coming in fast. It usually just floats around. It just is eroding everything, fast. Reporter the same storms responsible for rising floodwaters made their way east overnight. A tornado in adair, iowa, destroyed a house, killing one person inside. A submarine that once floated during world war ii was sitting on dry land three days ago. 22 miles away, the Arkansas River is close to cresting, forcing the entire town of Webbers Falls to evacuate. Jules hall is packing up her entire home, with the help of family and friends. I am moving my furniture out, because if the water gets as high as theyre forecasting, it will get in the house probably. Reporter three blocks away, farron lee is watching the water creep up the backyard of a home hes lived in for 46 years. Hes leaving, but hes determined to return home. When the water goes down, hopefully it will still be here, house might be gone. I pray this tree will still be here and ill still have a yard, and ill come back. Reporter this is supposed to be someones driveway, and now its part of the Arkansas River. The riverbed is actually supposed to be about 200 yards behind me. The fear is that if more rain comes overnight, as predicted, this water will take over the entire town. The mayor just came by and actually told us the mandatory evacuations are in place right now, and, major, things are so serious, we saw a nursing home across the river on the other side of the bridge evacuating as we speak. They are taking it very seriously here. Garrett very seriously indeed. Mireya, thank you very much. We have late news tonight from the pentagon. Our david martin reports, defense officials will present plans tomorrow to the white house to potentially send thousands more american troops to the middle east. This, they say, to counter potential iranian threats. Officials stress, however, no decision has been made. A cbs news poll just out finds 53 of the country says they want Congressional Democrats to drop the russia probe. But hold on. Among democrats, 73 want to keep it going. President trump today abruptly ended a meeting with Top Democrats saying no deal on infrastructure until and unless they stop investigating. Here is nancy cordes. Reporter the longplanned meeting lasted about three minutes, and ended with a president ial brushoff. To watch what happened in the white house would make your jaw drop. Reporter congressionalsay ed into the cabinet room 15 minutes late and didnt shake hands or sit down. He accused House Speaker nancy pelosi of saying something terrible about him, and left. He just. Took a pass, and it just makes me wonder why, why he did that. Reporter President Trump says it was this comment this morning that set him off. And we believe that the president of the United States is engaged in a coverup. Reporter he took to the rose garden to vent his frustration. Instead of walking in happily into a meeting, i walk in, to look at people that have coverup. Epr its a loaded term, reminiscent of watergate. You maintain you have no knowledge of the coverup . I had no part in any cover up. Reporter in this case, democrats say coverup refers to white house aides stonewalling on subpoenas and ignoring hearings. It simply cannot be the case that the executive branch gets to decide what witnesses will appear, what documents theyll agree to produce. Reporter todays walkout may not have been first when leader pelosi said she didnt agree with the wall, he just walked out. Reporter but infrastructure is one of the few areas where they do have common ground. Maybe it was lack of confidence on his part, that he really couldnt match the greatness of the challenge that we have. Innt, i ay for thees. D e. They have to choose. Democrats argue the real reason he walked out is because he knows he cant sell his own party on a 2 trillion infrastructure package, and so hes looking, major, they say, for a way out. Garrett nancy cordes, thanks so much. There is new legal trouble tonight for a lawyer who made headlines taking on President Trump. Michael avenatti is now charged with ripping off a famous exclient. He sat down with cbs news Jericka Duncan in march. Did you try to extort nike for millions of dollars . No, and any suggestion is absolutely absurd. Reporter avenatti had considered challenging President Trump for the white house. He even started his own Political Action committee. But as his legal problems piled up, he announced he would not run in 2020. He used onethird of the money he raised to pay himself. Major . Garrett paula reid, thank you. He was with them in afghanistan on 9 11. Jeff pegues picks up the story. Reporter when John Walker Lindh was captured in afghanistan shortly after the u. S. Lindhs family refused to comment today, but in a 2007 interview with cbs news, lindhs father frank said his son was not a traitor. We know hes not anti american. We know he doesnt have any sympathy for terrorism. Reporter federal officials arent talking about what led to lindhs Early Release, but it will be supervised. And he is not allowed to possess, view, or access information that contains extremist or terroristic views. Major . Garrett jeff pegues, thanks so much. A top United Nations official says there is a very high risk that africas latest Ebola Outbreak will spread.
