T reporter the Obama Administration lifted the ban on Transgender Military Service in june of 2016. Thendefense secretary ash carter Transgender Americans may e ope openly. And they can no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military just for being transgender. Reporter estimates of transgender individuals in the military range from 1,300 to 15,000. In his tweets this morning, the president said their continued service would burden the military with tremendous medical costs. But a 2016 study found transgender individuals who may opt for gender reassignment surgery or other procedures would add onetenth of one percent to overall military health care spending.
