On this easter sunday, at least 65 are dead, more than 300 hurt. It happened in the usually peaceful city of lahore, pakistans second largest city, which sits near the indian border. Police say the blast took place near the childrens rides early in the evening. The white house is calling the attack appalling. A Splinter Group of the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility and we begin with danielle nottingham. Reporter a blast caused by an apparent suicide bomber ripped through this popular city park where christian families gathered to celebrate easter sunday. The explosion happened near these rides. Most of the dead were women and children. Families searched for their loved ones amid the chaos. This witness says he carried 20 children to the hospital and moved three bodies to a police car. At the time of the blast, he says children were on rides at the fairground. Dozens of bodies draped in sheets were carried into waiting ambulances at the scene. Local hospitals flooded with hundreds of casualties declared a state of emergency. The wounded were treated wherever there was space. The explosion happened as Police Clashed with demonstrators throughout pakistan who were protesting what they believe was a political execution. The faction of the Taliban Group claiming responsibility for sundays attack in lahore said it deliberately targeted the Christian Community and warned more attacks would follow. Danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. Glor Police Investigating last weeks attacks in brussels made more arrests today after 13 separate raids across belgium. Dutch police took a suspect into custody for allegedly plotting an attack in france. And Italian Police arrested a man in connection with false i. D. S used by terror suspects. All this on a day marked by violent clashes at a memorial to the brussels victims. Allen pizzey is there. Reporter the slogans were against isis but belgian Authorities Say showing up en masse to shout them to what was an unofficial but peaceful memorial to bombing victims was disrespectful. It was also feared the event might be hijacked by right wingers to whip up racial tensions. Demonstrators style themselves soccer Club Hooligans who normally fight each other. We came together, black people, white people from different clubs to make a statement. We stand up against terrorism. Reporter but their reputation for violence turned the antiterrorism demonstration into what looked like a post soccer match riot. There had been plans for what was called a march against fear to be held here. Organizers called it off in order not to add the burden of providing security to the gathering for police after overburdened hunting for terrorists. Water cannons cleared the area and at least ten people were arrested. In the last several days four suspects had been arrested on terrorism charges in connection with the attacks in brussels and paris. Local media claimed one of them is the mysterious man in the black hat caught on cctv cameras at the airport. The belgian prosecutor named him only as faycal c. His address is 50 yards from this bakery. Owner chantal bandin said she had never seen faycal c in the shop but a man identified as one of the subway suicide bombers was a regular customers. When i saw his photo i was shocked, chantal says, i had tears in my eyes. So far the police have not talked to her. There has been growing criticism of both the Belgian Police and the lack of cooperation across europe in the fight against terrorism, jeff. The news that the warrants for the arrest of the alleged forger in italy was issued three months ago will go some way towards alleviating that. Glor allen pizzy, thank you very much. President obama called the parents of two americans killed at the brussels airport. Justin shults and his wife stephanie were there to see her mother off when the bombs exploded. The president said the thoughts, prayers, strength and resolve of the nation are with their families. We have some of those involved in last tuesdays attacks still at large, and isis threats of more attacks, brussels remains a city very much on edge. Heres debora patta. Reporter raids, Police Sirens and a city that has become accustomed to living with uncertainty and fear. But as authorities uncover more and more terror cells across the country, residents are realizing the next threat could be right next door. Here in a quiet road in the diverse neighborhood of schaerbeek an apartment in this building was turned into a homemade bomb factory. It was raided soon after tuesdays bomb blast. A resident in the area filmed the nerveracking moment when police stormed the building. And later he reported a still unnamed neighbor being lead away in handcuffs. Inside the apartment, a deadly haul of leftover bombs, highly volatile chemicals used to make the explosives and a suitcase full of bolts and nails to make the bombs more lethal. This father lives across the road and was out walking with his two children today. He agreed to talk to us on condition we did not show his face. He cannot believe that the quiet young men he saw across the road were cooking up one of the most dangerous explosives in the world. This explosive was so dangerous it was known as the mother of satan. How do you feel living so close to Something Like that . That would have been a catastrophe, he told us. That would have blown up all brussels, not just schaerbeek. He feels letdown by police. Maybe they didnt do their job properly, he said. They neglected things. They were too lenient. We spoke to many residents who were too afraid to go on camera, jeff, but there is a profound sense of shock and disbelief that the men behind the brussels attacks carried out their dangerous work in a quiet family neighborhood undetected by police. Glor debora, thank you. Syrian Government Troops have forced isis fighters out of the historic city of palmyra but it comes far too late for the roman era ruins and priceless antiques they destroyed there. It is a story Elizabeth Palmer has been following, and she has the latest now. Reporter for three weeks the syrian army has been advancing on palmyra in an offensive backed by russian air strikes to drive isis out. Today the army declared victory. Soldiers found the residential areas of the town littered with isis signs and banners. But all eyes were on the citys worldfamous ancient ruins. Mamoun abdelkarim, syrias head of antiquities, was glued to the tv in damascus watching for news. Some of the destruction he already knows about. Last summer isis posted videos of their fighters hacking at 2,000 year old treasures. Hundreds more were saved in the nick of time, dr. Abdelkarim told me by brave archaeologists who drove them to safety as isis moved in. Reporter but once isis was in control of palmyra it set about staging acts of barbarism it knew would cause outrage. A mass execution in the roman amphitheater. A videotape of its fighters packing explosives into palmyras unescoprotected buildings, first to be blown up in june was the lion of al lat. Then the monumental temples of bel and belshamin, both reduced to rubble. For ten months isis occupied palmyra and archaeologists feared that before they left, they would destroy the rest. But incredibly, barring hidden bombs and booby traps, today it appears safe and intact. Of course its going to take a few days, jeff, before the syrian army really has a chance to examine the site and declare it secure before the archaeologists can go in and do a proper inventory. Glor liz palmer, thank you very much tonight. Pope francis denounced what he called blind terrorism in his easter message today. He remembered terror victims not just in brussels but around the world. Security was extra tight. Tens of thousands of people gathered in st. Peters square. In campaign 2016 Bernie Sanders won three times last night. He took all of yesterdays caucuses by a wide margin in hawaii, alaska and washington state. But still did not make a significant dent in Hillary Clintons lead in the delegate count. She remains far ahead. Terrorism has been a major topic on the campaign trail this week. But some proposals made on the stump on how to fight terror arent going over well with police who would enforce them. Heres craig boswell. We need to be going after where the threat comes from. And the threat comes from radicalization. Reporter today senator ted cruz doubled down on his proposals to patrol muslim neighborhoods in the u. S. What that looks like is proactive law enforcement. What that looks like is addressing the problem and engaging the problem. Reporter in a scathing New York Daily News oped sunday Police Commissioner bill bratton said it is clear from his comments that senator ted cruz knows absolutely nothing about counterterrorism in new york city. Deputy commissioner john miller reinforced his boss message. I think when you have people campaigning through fear and using that as leverage, and then giving advice to the police to be the cudgel of that fear, that is not the direction american policing should be taking in a democracy. Reporter after initially siding with cruz, donald trump was pressed on whether he would take any further actions. Let me ask you right now would you categorically rule out the idea of internment camps for american muslims. I would rule it out but we would have to be very vigilant. Were going to have to be very smart. Reporter both democratic president ial candidates dismissed cruz and trump outright, as did john kasich who called the muslim proposal knee jerk over the top reactions. I dont even know how you would do it and secondly we cant be out there aggravating the very people whose cooperation we need. Eporter the debate over National Security is likely to continue through the next round of nominating contests. Jeff, there are eight primaries next month beginning in wisconsin on april 5th. Glor craig, thank you. Hardly spring break weather in parts of florida this weekend. This is hail in a town near pensacola. Severe weather stretches as far south as orlando and beyond. For more we turn to wcbs meteorologist elise finch. We have a large cold front across a good portion of the eastern third of the country. So in addition to the hail that was already spotted in florida, small hail, gusty winds and heavy rain still a possibility there. We already have some flood alerts into louisiana. Now the Storm Prediction Center is expecting thunderstorms from really michigan to florida tonight, with marginal and slight risk of severe thunderstorms really in parts of indiana, kentucky and into ohio. As we turn on the future cast you will notice a lot of activity in advance of and along that cold front pushing its way east. By the time this moves through the northeast, however it is a significantly weakened system. So in the new york area were really just expecting half an inch of rain. At the end of this system, could see some light snow showers and notice we are going to have quite a cold start to the beginning of april. Jeff . Glor elise, thank you. Glor in tampa early friday, a stunning theft, multiple offenders, multiple cars, and it was all caught on surveillance video. Heres jericka duncan. Reporter two of the suspects entered the tampa dealership through a smashed window and seemed to know exactly where to look for the box of keys. Minutes later, a group of what appeared to be eight other young men waiting in the lot began unlocking vehicle doors. Tampa police say the thieves got away with eight vehicles just after 7 00 friday morning. Danny halimi owns the dealership. When you realize eight cars have been stolen and another 12 have been damaged that are going to need some body work and repairs, that kind of, you know, puts you in a different perspective. And makes you realize that anything is possible. Reporter it is similar to what happened earlier this month when ten criminals used a truck to rip off the doors of this houston gun store. They busted through several glass cases and in just two minutes they stole 85 weapons. The National Retail federation polled retailers around the country to gauge the impact of what is called multiple offender crimes. Their most recent study found that nearly eight out of ten retailers reporting being a victim of that type of crime. Suspects in only half of these cases were ever arrested. Halimi said police told him today they arrested one suspect and now have three of his cars, including one of his most expensive vehicles worth 27,000. Hindsight is always 20 20 but we definitely have learned a lesson. The main lesson is dont leave the keys on the lot. Reporter police say the suspects are part of a gang based out of orlando. The dealership owner says the criminals walked away with all of the keys, even to the cars they did not take, which means, jeff, he has to replace those keys as well.
