This is the cbs evening news. Glor good evening, i am jeff glor and winter is bitter cold for tens of millions up and down the east coast, extreme wind in many spots, unusual snowfall totals for some. Here is a look from space tonight, the weather map of half the country is a mess, in caribou, maine, they are expecting 14 inches of snow, in boston, the winds gusted up to 50 Miles Per Hour, and in jacksonville, florida, they expect to hit a low of 41 degrees tonight. Jerika duncan has more. Jerika duncan has more. The coastal storm up the northeast brought up to a foot of snow . Bangor, maine, 60 Miles Per Hour wind gusts whipped across this nearly empty. And in boston, massachusetts the storm downed trees, knocking out power to more than 13,000 homes and the snow was in the spotlight earlier today at gillette stadium, crews rushed to clear the field in time for todays game between the new England Patriots and denver broncos. Winter is officially seven weeks away, but this weeks weather could care less about a calendar. Up to eight inches of snow blanketed the southeast with an early surprise. Went outside and there is snow everywhere. Unseasonably the early to me. At one point North Carolina was under a winter storm warning, children took advantage and considered the snow a gift, the rare sight of fall blending with winter even gave some adult as reason to smile. I think to all the locals, oh, isnt this wonderful and they are all saying, hmm, you dont live here, do you . According to the National Weather service, saturday was the earlier snowfall in columbia, south carolina, beating a 100yearold record by eight days, a freeze advisory the remains in place for much of the region through monday. This week temperatures will return to average or better in the east, jeff, another system will bring warmer air and less wind. Glor all right, jerika, thank you very much. On this final weekend of campaign 2014 the candidates and their supporters are going all out and that includes one very prominent politician who has not been very welcome in most place this is season. Here is julianna goldman. Making his final campaign push, president obama was in deep blue territory today. And. Vetting up the democratic base, especially women and minority voters, in connecticut and pennsylvania. Make some phone calls, knock on some doors. Grab everybody you know. Get them out to vote. Dont stay home. Dont let somebody else choose your future for you. The low Approval Ratings the president s Campaign Appearances are limited and strategic. Where the republicans tied candidates to the unpopular president. Senator rand paul called tuesdays vote a referendum on the President Energy my state the democratic candidate wont even admit she voted for him for presidency. The candidate, kentucky hopefully alliston Lundergan Grimes ran this ad. I am not barack obama. President obama headlined 17 rallies for candidates around the country, this year, he only appeared at seven. Democratic senator Amy Klobuchar isnt up for reelection, told Bob Schieffer today the 43 has helped as much as he can, especially with fundraising. He has done a lot of work but it is clear, it varied state by state where people agree or disagree with the president on different issues. Jeff, white house Officials Say the president can still get out the vote in battleground states without physically being there, the in the digital age she targeting those democrats using web ads, videos and radio spots. Glor julianna goldman, thank you. With control of the senate hanging the balance we are joined by congressional correspondence nancy cordes. The polls having the republicans winning the senate what are the chances of a landslide and if there is a landslide what does that look like . Well you start to see gop victories in not just traditional republican states like arkansas and louisiana but real battleground states like colorado and iowa and new hampshire, then they are going to be a little argue their idea has caught on across the political spectrum, democrats will argue that the entire in this election was about president obama not about any new ideas, and they will also argue if they lose all these states this is just what happens in any 60 years of a, sixth year of a presidency. Glor are there states where republicans are playing defense. Only a couple of states, the first one is georgia, where the demi chel nunn is neck and neck with Republican David Perdue to replace the retiring republican chambliss, the only one giving them heartburn is kansas where an independent is neck and neck or healed of the long time incumbent pat roberts because orman is an independent he doesnt have a Traditional Party apparatus behind him helping him to get out the vote on election day, so it is really, really difficult for both parties to figure out how that race is going to figure out. Glor nancy cordes, thank you very much and see you on tuesday night and cbs news will have election updates throughout tuesday evening. Including complete live coverage at 10 00 p. M. , 9 00 central. Later, the lava flow in hawaii, learning lessons from previous disasters, and the team loss of a washington red skin involved in a pregame accident when the cbs evening news continues. Glor in hawaii this weekend, the lava has slowed, the lava on the Southern Side of the big island appears to have largely stalled, less than 500 feet from the main road in pahoa, pahoa is the latest but will not be the last town to face this threat. Carter evans has more on this. Reporter people who live in the small village of pahoa are on edge, they have been directly in the path of the lava flow for weeks. It could stop or it could keep ongoing. Paul owns a restaurant downtown. There is a potential for this whole area to be covered in lava. Kilauea has constantly erupting for three decades and it is like entire, wiped entire towns off the map including one just ten miles away from pahoa, this is kalapana and it used to be a Thriving Community until it was buried by up to 50 feet of lava from kilauea nearly 30 years ago. It destroyed more than 180 homes, covering everything in its path with molten rock. Turning kalapana into a ghost town. This is basically almost a modern day pompeii. Brad wetmores home is proof that even a town destroyed by a volume kevolcano can rebuild. His is one of 48 new homes built right on top of the lava. A lot of people would look at this and say, how can you live out here in a place like this . And i say how could i not live here . I dont have to cut the grass. I dont have to pay any bills here. Many in pahoa are asking why nothing is being done to divert the lava, so their town can avoid what happened here. Why cant you just build walls to direct the lava where you want it to go . There is no assurance we wouldnt be doing harm when trying to redirect the flow. Darryl oliveira heads hawaiis Civil Defense agency he says technology is no match for the constant flow of lava from this volume kay know. You can, 800 miles wide and inconceivable or impracticable to build an eightmile wide berm in the time frame we have without any assurance of the effect. 20, 30 years later cal pa la is proof that life can return. Life can return, it is not same, it is different, but there is still life. And it is now taking root on some of the newest land on the planet. Carter evans, cbs news, pahoa, hawaii. Glor up next, overuse injuries, the epidemic that is sidelining thousands of Young Athletes. Glor they are called overuse injuries, and more and more Young Athletes in america are suffering from them. They happen most often to kids who specialize in a single sport from a very young age, and the consequences can be devastating. This week, Sharyn Alfonsi of 60 minutes sports takes a look. We asked Orthopedic Surgeon nirav pandya is scrubbing in for Tuesday Morning operation, at oakland Childrens Hospital clinic in walnut creek, california. 3 ac elements today. Is this a typical day. As the pretty standard day for me. All of the operations are young soccer players with torn anterior cruciate ligaments a 12yearold boy, 18yearold girl and 16yearold mekayla berringer. Today will be her second time in dr. Pandyas operating room more than a year ago he repaired the ligament in the right knee as it gave way as she ran down the field. And mekayla berringer went through nine months of rehab and was barely returned to full speed when she was hit in a game and tore the left acl. Are you thinking of getting back on the field right now . It is one thing on my mind. That you want to get back there or whether you should or not . Both. What is your gut telling you right now as you sit here today about to do your second acl operation. That i should get back on the field. And why is that important to you . Like my life, i am really passionate about it. Mekayla berringer is just one of thousands of female soccer players in america who will stuff a torn knee ligament this year. It is a, all the oh all of the female soccer players it is such a part of the sport and by the time they are 12 or 13 they know someone who has a knee injury and multiple injuries it is the norm now. It is crazy to me that all of these 12yearolds know what an acl is, i mean, i didnt know what an acl was, and i certainly didnt know anybody who had surgery. Right. But this is the new norm. Yes, it is almost like, it is a matter of pride. You can see sharyns full report on 60 minutes sports tuesday night on show time. Thousands of people outside todays game between minnesota and washington were not there to tailgate, a protest against the Redskins Team name for over 2,000 people in minnesota, native americans chanting we are not a mascot. Still ahead here, nurse nina pham and bentley together again. Glor the day of the dead festival in mexico is wrapping up tonight. Despite the name the day of the dead actually lasts three days, and it is to celebrate rather than mourn those who died, the tradition dates back at least 3,000 years. Giant flock of sheep descended on madrid, spain today, they were led into busy streets by shepherds to call attention to ancient grazing rights which lately have been threatened by urban sprawl, we were told there were about 2,000 sheep on the streets of madrid today. The dallas nurse now recovered from ebola has been reunited with her best friend, nina phams spaniel bentley, there he is, was in quarantine and cared for by workers in full hazmat suits for a time but bentley has now tested negative for ebola three times. Coming up here, game day for a basketball player determined to take the court. One final time. Glor finally tonight, every basketball player is up against the clock but none more so than the brave young woman, our Steve Hartman and thousands of others watched in action today. Lauryn hill and her mount st. Joseph university a few hours ago here in cincinnati, hi owe the mount st. Joseph University Basketball team took to the floor in their Season Opener, all eyes on a starting forward, who may just be the most devoted player this game has ever seen. Number 22, lauryn hill 19yearold freshman lauryn hill was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer about a year ago. From that moment to this, her main goal has been to play in just one College Basketball game. I wanted to wear that jersey and feel like a superhero again because thats how i feel when i put on the jersey and number. For weeks, lauren has been waiting for and working for that first game. Since practice began last month she has been training with her team, getting up at 5 30 a. M. Fighting back unimaginable headaches, in utter defines of her cancer. When i am not there, i feel like i am letting people down. Lauren has weeks to live at best, and here she is worried about letting other people down. Why does it matter so much to you . Because i love them. They are like my family. And i want to think positive. But it took more than will to get lauren to this moment because time was so short the ncaa allowed mount st. Joseph university to move the Season Opener up two weeks and moved the venue to accommodate all the people who wanted to support lauren. This arena seats 5,000 and sold out. Just checking into the game was enough but coach benjamin didnt want to stop there. He had a special play designed, this mount st. Joe they would try to double down on laurens dream and as fate would have it they got the tip. And lauren sets high, the screen comes, the ball goes down to lauryn hill, and the layup the good a layup for lauren and with that, lauryn hill checked out of the game. Perfect from the field, and a perfect example for any athlete who wants to go out on top. Today has been the best day i have ever had. [ cheers and applause ] Steve Hartman, cbs news, in cincinnati.
