The sheriff of Santa Barbara california called it a case of premeditated mass murder and a hollywood film maker says his son was the gunman. At least six people were shot and killed in a student neighborhood near the university of california Santa Barbara, Law Enforcement sources have confirmed to cbs news the gunman was a 22yearold named Elliot Rodger. He also died of a bullet to the head, although it is not clear if he killed himself or was shot by police. Recently, rodgers mother had apparently seen youtube videos where rodger mentioned suicide and shooting people and called the police. A family lawyer say the police interviewed rodger and found him to be a quote, perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human. Danielle nottingham begins our coverage. We have another gunshot. Shots fired. Shots fired. The calls came in to 911 starting 9 30 last night. The streets near the campus of u. C. Santa barbara were filled with students. We need three ambulances here. A car pulled up and stopped and rolled down the window and he raises, he said something but i dont know what. He raises a gun to me and starts opening fire. The first bullet went between me and my boyfriend and my boyfriend was hit. It went through just the muscle tissue so he went to the hospital and got 40 stitches. The bullet grazed me, but there is a bruise. Thats it. Jacquelin taylor was walking home after a night out with a couple of friends. Heard four gunshots. Just seemed to be shooting randomly. There was a huge crowd of people. I dont know if he was aiming at anyone specifically, but i think he was intending to kill. Those girls got a close look at the gunman who jacquelin and others recognized as the man in this youtube video. Elliot rodger. To all the popular kids. You never accepted me. Now you are all going to pay for it. The nearly ten minute rampage ended with a final gunbattle with sheriffs deputies, in the end, rodger and six others were killed, one of them was christopher martinez, his father richard spoke out late this afternoon. Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, not one more late today cbs news obtained a copy of Elliot Rodgers 141 page manifesto, called my twisted world. It says this is the story of my entire life. It is a dark story of sadness, anger and hatred. It describes what he claims is a long history of bullying and difficult social adjustment. Outside rodgers apartment a coroners team was removing bodies. It is not known if there are additional victims. This Quiet Community is in shock. What were you thinking when you came home today. I just didnt want to see any blood on the ground. I didnt want to see like anything that would remind me of what happened. I just wished it was all gone. Speaking in front of Peter Rodgers home, attorney Alan Schifman told reporters the shooters family alerted the authorities after Elliot Rodger posted a disturbing ranting messages on youtube. Schifman said Elliot Rodger had been diagnosed at a young age with aspergers syndrome, a mild form of autism but did not have a history of gun use. Schifman also said the family is devastated and will cooperate in any way possible with investigators and police. This is the tragedy of the most extreme.
