I looked over and saw the fedex truck coming straight for me. And he was in flames already. The fedex truck was already on fire. Yeah, it was. But another witness ryan householder came forward this weekend to say he was in his yard on the opposite side of the highway and did not see flames. Later the high seas, bleeding money off fees bleeding money off American Retirement accounts, when the cbs evening news continues. Jeff a new study says typical 401 k fees are taking tens of thousands of dollars out of americans retirement accounts. The issue here professionally managed funds versus index funds that invest in the wider market. Jack otter is editor of barrons. Com, he joins us tonight. Jack, not a new debate but new numbers really tell a story here. Yes, jeff, you know, you cant control what the stock market does, what inflation does what Interest Rates do to your retirement accounts. One of the few things you can control is the fees you pay. Most accounts give you an option between actively managed funds in which professional stockpickers try to beat market or an index fund that just owns all the stocks in the market. Of course they charge fees for that. The actively managed funds charge more. Jeff they argue they are experts and know better. It sounds logical. Who wants average returns. But the reality is that its very hard for actively active managers to beat the index after fees. In fact, 80 of active managers fail to keep up with the indexes. Some of these numbers are pretty stunning am we have some examples here. Exactly. Say if you take a 25yearold woman who makes the average salary for that age, 30,500. She invests in active managed funds, pays 1. 3 Percentage Points which is the average cost they charge. She gets 6. 8 a year. At age 67 she can retire with 381,000. Which isnt bad. But imagine if she had put her money instead in a low Cost Index Fund charging just. 25 Percentage Points. She gets the same returns. She retires at the same age with 477,000. That is a 96,000 difference. 25 increase just from that small difference in fees. Jeff a huge number. Why dont most people know about this. The reason is because that 96,000 goes into the fund companys pockets so its not in their interest to tell you. If you need convincing, Warren Buffett just released some details of his will. He is directing that 90 of hits wifes money go into an index fund. Jeff surprised that its not more, jack otter, thank you very much. Next am,ed week ahead for Oscar Pistorius. Jeff the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius resumes tomorrow in southafter cab, and once again miss pistorius will be the star wits js a defendant facing an unrelenting atack bit prosecution, Deborah Patta is there. After last weeks grueling turn on the witness stand, Oscar Pistorius said he was planning to spend this weekend sleeping to rest up for another savaging from the prosecution on monday. He can probably count on that. The prosecution spent the weekend meticulously going through Court Records to look for errors and inconsistencies in pistoriuss evidence. That would just be further ammunition for them after pistoriuss dismal performance during his first week on the stand. Pistorius has made damaging mistakes on the witness box. The prosecution says its because he is lying. Pistorius claims its because he is tired. The judge halted his testimony at one point asking if he was too exhausted to continue. Are you making these mistakes because youre too tired. The other problem pistorius has is his inability to control his emotions. He has repeatedly broken down into uncontrolled soning. The prosecution successfully revealed pistoriuss crude obsession with guns. Footage of him laughing and shooting a watermelon at a gun range was introduce. You killed her, you shot and killed her. The prosecution says this is exactly how he killed his girlfriend, insisting he look at a photo of her shattered skull. Take responsibility for what you have done, mr. Pistorius. Ive taken responsible but i will not look for a picture about what i saw an felt that night. Reporter on monday hes back on his own on the witness stand. He is not allowed to consult with his legal team whilst testifying. Deborah patta, cbs news, john hans burg, south africa. Palm sunday services were celebrated worldwide today. Coming up, years of living dangerously documentary takes on Climate Change. Jeff finally tonight a new series about Climate Change premiers tonight on showtime. Part of the cbs corporation. Its called years of living dangerously Elaine Quijano spoke today with the programs lead climatologist heidi cullen. Tell me about what the premise of the documentary is who it is that you have as correspondent and what it is that those correspondents do to tell the story of Climate Change. It uses celebrities as cor correspondents. And i think provide its a fresh way to look at Climate Change because you have celebrities who care about the issue but without dont fully know anything yet but are going on this journey. What is the problem y are we doing. It is incredibly powerful when you see someone like Harrison Ford go to indonesia and look at what deforestation is doing and you realize you can go all the way to indonesia and actually you are seeing an issue that plays out and has consequences right here at home. Reporter what can you say is established fact in this field . And what is still up for debate . I think its really clear that as our planet warms it means more pain for more people. We know that climate disruption f will you, it equals economic stress, it equals food stress, and it equals water stress so that plays out in ways that we really need to manage. That is just another dry spell and we would be out of it but its more than a dry spell. We see Climate Change as this additional risk that weve got to deal with. What is it that you want viewers to take away from this documentary . I think the hope is that for everyone who watches it, they understand the urgency. They understand why scientists are so concerned. And you know, we really need to treat Climate Change like we do national defense. Because in essence, this is national defense, if you will. I would say that its really important to think of Climate Change as this issue that is connected to a lot of different threats. Reporter how are you hoping that translates into any kind of solution . The real hope is that folks across the country say to the elected officials, i want you to lead on this. I give you my permission to make this a priority because i think its good for my community that we deal with this. Jeff that was Elaine Quijano. That is the cbs evening news, later on cbs 60 minutes.
