Tonights families continue to wait both to find out what happened to relatives and their homes. From northwest washington, we begin with lee stoll of our affiliate kiro. Rescue crews are scanning half a mile wide mud slide at this hour, continuing to sift through the remains of entire neighborhoods. Oh, my gosh. This eyewitness was driving when the mud slide hit and captured the aftermath on his cellphone. I just saw the darkness. Thats all i could see, everything from one side to the other side. Basically everything is gone. Recent heavy rains caused the groundwater saturation that triggered the river of mud, trees and rocks that Officials Say came out of nowhere. It blocked the north fork of the river creating a severe flooding threat and tonight there is word rising water is slowly breaking through the dam. We go want to ask people to remain in a state of heightened awareness because there is not total predictability about how this river is going to behave. Reporter we are at a checkpoint near the mud slide where Law Enforcement is only allowing people in who want to check on their property or loved ones. Everyone else is being kept out, that is how precarious this situation is. Those people who have been displaced by the slide, though, are getting help from the red cross. They have set up two shelters in the area. All right, that was lee stoll of cbs associate kiro. With the threat of more flooding looming we want to bring our affiliate eric fisher from wbz. What is next in the Pacific Northwest . Jeff, still a developing situation here. We have a Flash Flood Watch out for snohomish county. And there is a Flash Flood Warning and zero have all of this debris from the mud slide itself in the way of that river. Eventually that debris is going to let go and expecting flooding a far down as arlington. The weather is not expecting catastrophic warning but wants to make sure everybody is in a safe spot and minor flooding is expecting when that releases. It has gone from dry to stormy in the last few months. Seattle picked up nearly 14 inches of rain the last two months more than double what they normally would expect. Meanwhile back further east more cold weather, another storm on the way . Another storm on the way, and a lot of cold. That is the guarantee. High temperatures into late march, twenties in buffalo and boston. Below the freezing mark in new york city. We will watch a strong front that will develop, this one a little further to the east, and might not be looking at widespread impact but where it brushes the coast you will be tracking snow, perhaps from North Carolina right on up toward maine. The biggest potential, southeast massachusetts, and blizzard conditions not out of the question by wednesday morning. Eric fisher, thank you very much. Damage control continues in texas tonight after a Major Oil Spill off the coast this weekend. It happened in galveston bay, when a barge collided with a tanker. Tonight crews are dealing with not only an environmental mess but a logistical nightmare. Here is manuel bojorquez. Reporter the leaking barge had nearly a million gallons of marine oil on board when the accident happened but only one of the barns oil tanks sprung a leak. Crews have drained the oil from the damaged barge and they are towing it to a nearby shipyard. It is continuing to move. We have got, i believe over 60,000 feet of boom that is out therthere protecting environmenl sensitive areas as well as containing the oil and trying to get it into places where we can recover it. Now the focus is on skimming the thick sticky oil off the water and parts of the shoreline. Oil residue has already been spotted 12 miles away from the accident scene in the gulf of mexico. It is too soon for investigators to say what caused the accident, but there was fog in the area when the ships collided so visibility could have been a factor. The cleanup operation has shipping traffic at a stand still. More than 60 vessels including three crew ships are waiting to pass through the area where the accident happened. The coast guard plans to let those ships pass through one at a time, but there is no word yet on when the channel where the spill happened will reopen to all traffic. The first of those crew ships will head here to the port of galveston. There is still no word on exactly when it will arrive. Manuel bojorquez, cbs news, galveston, texas.
