This is a continuing, volatile, difficult, dangerous Fire Fighting environment. And based on the forecast, based on the of these fires its expected to become a whole lot worse yet. 1,000 firefighters and 90 aircraft are battling the flames. Fire crews have set up containment lines known as the backburn to stop the advancing fires. At least 12 towns are under threat. If the fire does come towards the village we feel confident that the backburn will slow things down. Plums of smoke and ash can be seen miles away. So far more than 271,000 acres have burned. And thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate across new south wales, australias most popular state. As we reported last night Jpmorgan Chase has tentatively agreed to pay the biggest corporate fine ever. The total includes 9 billion in penalties plus 4 billion in consumer relief including home loan modification. But the criminal case continues. And so do other questions. With more now were joined by cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, lesss talk about the criminal case. What do you think happens next . Well, i think its really hard to make criminal case. Thats why no c. E. O. Has gone to jail since the whole financial crisis erupted. Weve seen a lot of civil suits but no criminal cases where someone has actually had to go to jail. They are notoriously difficult to bring and to win. So it may be one more case that gets settled. But i dont expect there to be a criminal charge against jay me die man individually or anyone else in that c suite. Jeff a 13 billion settlement, what cuss it mean for us. I dont think it means that much, i know that is disheartening. There will be some that get mortgage modification, thats great. And there will be a lot of money to be pour mood that. But for the regular old person out there, if you own jpmorgan stock t didnt really affect your stock price, it is a deal anticipated for quite some time. And for the rest of us, i dont feel really good about this deal and i dont think anybody else does. Jeff you mentioned jay me die man, what is his future now. A lot of people mention whether he is going to lose his job. I done see that happening. The board has been very much supportive of him. So have the share hoferlds there have been some efforts to try to split his role as c. E. O. And chairman of the board. Those resolutions have actually not passed in the last couple of years. I dont think it will happen again, i think he will retain the role, maybe with an ego slightly diminished but to the by that much. Jeff meanwhile as banks get squeezed wall street continues to set records, what is happening . The market overall is euphoric about not going over the debt ceiling. That doesnt mean the economy is growing as a sizzling pace or that there are lots of jobs forthcoming. We have to keep an eye on all the data that is about to come out that we didnt get in the last few weeks that will probably determine the next leg up in the stock market. Jeff jill, always great to see you. Great to be with you. Jeff up next, where is avonte oquendo, an all out search in new york. The 14yearold is autistic and nonverbal. He was last seen on Surveillance Video at his School Running through the hall as loan and leaving the building. Do you blame anyone . No. There will be a time for that. But for now im just trying to concentrate on getting him back. Reporter over 100 new York City Police officers and 600 volunteers have been searching. Marissa dejesus has been handing out flyers every day since he went missing. We have flyers here in all sorts of languages, korean, creole, russian, italian, bengali, chinese, spanish, english, just so the word gets out there. Reporter searchers have been paying close attention to the subway because his family says the boy loves the train system. Hes not able to go and tell someone, hey, im lost, or i need to go here or my parents are looking for me. Reporter because of that, a special van is being used with thermal imaging sensors in a public address system. Hi, avonte, its mom. Its mom a vonte. It blasts avontes mothers voice. Tommy brennan is a volunteer for citiwide disaster services. The child being autistic responds better to the sound of his mothers voice than to a stranger. Reporter with over 200 tips and at least two possible sightings, police have expanded the search for avonte to neighboring long island and new verse new jersey. The reward for his return is close to 90,000. Terrell brown, cbs news, new york. Still ahead, dating pulp fiction before it crumbles away. Jeff in early 20th century some of americas greatest writers got their start in the cheap popular magazines known as full fiction because of the wood paper they were printed on. Some say pulp fiction is hardly worth preserving. The library of congress disagrees. Chip reid tonight has a look inside a remarkable restoration project. I have a piece of the pulp paper and it just, you can see what happens to it if you bend it at all t really just disintegrates. Reporter Jeanne Drewes manages restoration experts at the library of congress, with over 14,000 pulp magazines and novels housed in the collection theyre trying to preserve the works before they disappear. It is a race against time. And every time something gets used that is in this fragile a condition t can be further damaged. Pulp paper was never meant to be saved. Cheap to produce, the edges are ragged but the titles coupled with lurid covers convinced millions of readers to part with their change. That was its bait, the covers were the bait krt crime writer and fan George Pelecanos said the books lit a fire under him. Bull novels were about people who stumble, without go to work every day. They dont usually win big in the end but they have these moments of glorious redemption. Pulp fiction created opportunities for some of mercks most famous writers like erle stanley gardner, ray bradbury and raymond chandler. Pelecanos says the writing sprang from the minds of men and women traumatize by war. It seemed all sorts of horrible things, seen a lot of death. They came back and started writing these very, very dark books. Chandler when describing this genre famously said the streets were dark with something more than night. Reporter some literary critics were unimpressed but pelecanos says pulp fiction is an important piece of literary history. As a cultural artifact it is important to keep all of them. And recognize that that the genre produced some true masterpieces of american fiction. They transported readers to new and different worlds. Thats the value of fiction, isnt it. To be able to put yourself in someone elses place for just a little while and experience that. And thats what these were. An experience the library of congress is now preserving for future generations. Chip reid, cbs news, washington. The largest u. S. Naval destroyer ever built is about to hit the water. When you got parried you know its sup8osqb to page sense but you cant make much sense of it. So whenever you come up and actually see the progress you have made for the day or the week its phenomenal.
