story of the reverend who has taken his anti-violence sermon to the rooftop. >> this is the "cbs evening news." >> good evening, i'm jeff glor, congresswoman gabrielle giffords says she is doing what is best for arizona. this afternoon in a surprise announcement giffords says she will resign from congress this week. the news coming a little more than a year after she was shot in the head and survived. bill whitaker has more on giffords's statement and her future plans. >> a lot has happened over the past year. we cannot change that. >> reporter: poised, showing remarkably little sign of the violent trauma she endured, representative gabrielle giffords of arizona took to youtube to announce that she will not finish her third term in congress. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> reporter: whether she would stay in congress was a question that loomed over the 41-year-old tucson native since she was critically injured a year ago, shot in the head by a gunman as she met with constituents. six people were killed, 12 others wounded. giffords spent most of last year in rehabilitation as people all over the world watched and prayed and cheered her every milestone. she got a standing ovation from congress when she returned in august to vote on the debt limit. at a candlelight vigil on the anniversary of her shooting, giffords lead the pledge of allegiance. >> i pleg allegiance to the flag of the united states of america. >> reporter: she has lost 50% of her vision and still struggles to speak and walk. today constituents expressed sadness but little shock at her decision. >> it saddened me because she is an articulate and eloquent advocate for southern arizona. >> but i also don't blame her at all for her decision. >> in her video giffords says she's grateful for all the support. >> i don't remember much from that horrible day. but i will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice. thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover. >> reporter: today president obama praised giffords as an inspiration and the very best of what public service should be. giffords says as her last official act, she plans to attend the state of the union address in washington tuesday. meanwhile, arizona says it plans to hold a special election to fill giffords's seat. jeff? >> bill whitaker, thank you. we move now to state college, pennsylvania, where we've been watching an outpouring of grief following the news that joe paterno has died. paterno was the winningest coach in division 1 college football history by a child sex abuse can dal-- scandal cost him his job this past fall. armen keteyian is at penn state. >> at the larger-than-life statue honoring paterno expressions of grief were both simple and profound. >> i think at the end of the day people will remember what a great man he was and how much he did for this university. >> reporter: the winningest coach in the history of major college football died this morning after a short battle with lung cancer. affectionately known as joe pa, paterno was born december 21st, 1926 in brooklyn, new york. his wife later revolved around three things, family, football and his beloved university. >> he was a coach that just stood for more than just football. >> paterno first showed up in happy valley in 1950 taking overs ahead coach in 1966. over the next 46 seasons paterno won 409 games. five of his teams would go undefeated and two in 1982 and '86 would finish ranked number one. >> i want to thank the guys who have played for us and i mean us, i mean penn state. >> reporter: but it was off the field that paterno made arguably his most lasting mark, combining a spotless recruiting record with a graduation rate of nearly 90%. he called it success with honors. >> he was a real teacher, you know. a real moral guy and i think some of that has gotten lost here in the last couple of months. >> lost in a sex scandal that tarred his university. and ultimately paterno himself. fired on the brink of retirement last november by the board of trustees for not alerting police to allege child sex abuse by former assistant coach jerry sandusky. >> in his final interview, a frail paterno spoke out to the "washington post". wanting to set the record straight about what he told his bosses after learning of a locker room incident involving sandusky and a young boy in 2002. would you guys look into it? because i don't know, you know, i never had to deal with something like that. in a statement today, sandusky said dottie and i would like to convey our sympathy to sue and her family. nobody will be able to take away the memories of a great man. >> on this day at this site sandusky and the scandal seem distant from that man whose contributions to his sport and the lives of others knew no bounds. joseph vincent paterno, maker of men, dead at the age of 85. >> funeral arrangements are pending, jeff, but penn state said today it plans to honor paterno's remarkable life and legacy. >> armen keteyian, thank you. to campaign 2012 now. and newt gingrich has upended the race. the former house speaker won big in south carolina's primary last night. only 1 week earlier gingrich had seemingly limped in only to crush his republican rivals on the way out. jan crawford is in columbia. >> reporter: it was one of the fastest comebacks in the history of politics. >> with your help, i will become your nominee but we need your help. >> reporter: today newt gingrich explained his win this way to bob schieffer. >> and i think in south carolina it began to become really clear that if you want to beat barack obama, then newt gingrich is the only person who has the background, the experience and the ability to get on the stage and drive home a conservative message with authenticity. >> hi stlrx dow want me to sign that. >> reporter: just a week ago mitt romney had a narrow lead. but gingrich took that stage in two debates and rocked the house. >> they haven't built a road, they haven't helped the people, they haven't done anything. >> reporter: while romney got bogged down in questions over his taxes and whether he would release his return. >> i'll put these out at within time. >> reporter: after insisting he would release them when he filed in april, romney today said he would make them public tuesday. >> i think we just made a mistake in holding off as long as we did. it just was a distraction. we want to gets back to the real issues in the campaign. >> reporter: but the bigger problem for romney had been looming all along. many conservatives think he's too moderate. they want someone who will rail against the establishment, the media elite and president obama. gingrich did that and trounced him. voters seem willing to overlook gingrich's messy personal life including allegations late last week from his second ex-wife claiming he had asked her for an open marriage. he even won among evangelicals and women. but today romney implied gingrich doesn't have what it takes to become the nominee. >> i don't think that the people of this country are going to choose as the next presidents of the united states a person who spent 40 years in washington as a congressman and a lobbyist. >> reporter: now going into florida romney has the edge. he's got a lot of money, a good organization and a solid ground game. but gingrich has the momentum. and jeff, that means this has suddenly become a real battle. not only for the republican nomination but for the soul of the republican party. >> jan crawford, thank you. >> okay, for more now we're joined by cbs news political director john dickerson. good evening to you. jan talked about this battle for the soul of the republican party. how does that battle play out in florida? >> it plays out over the airwaves. florida is a state where being on television is more important than shaking hands and holding rallies. that will help newt gingrich because of his win in south carolina. a lot of people will see that on the 10 media markets there. there are also two debates worked well for gingrich in other states. mitt romney is plan connect the airwaves with money, millions of dollars of ads he's run. and he's also spending his money on organization. he's reaching out to 400,000 absentee voters of the 2 million since mid december his team has been looking for anybody who has an inclination to vote for mitt romney and making sure they do so. >> so john at this point are we talking about a protracted batle that lasts not just beyond florida into the weeks ahead into the months ahead? >> that's what both campaigns are bracing for. and it's going to get kind of nasty. both the romney and gingrich campaigns have personal edges to their attacks. newt gingrich has been basically saying that romney is not the person he says he is and mitt romney at the end of south carolina contest was angry that his integrity was questioned. but he's going after gingrich saying that his ego gets in the way, that he's too volatile and that he just has character flaws that make it impossible for him to be president. >> watching it all our political director john dickerson, john, thanks. >> so this is the first time now that three different candidates have won the first three contests on the republican side. the latest cbs news estimates put mitt romney atop the delegate count but those totals are far below more than the 1100 necessary to claim the gop nomination. more politics, president obama delivers his third state of the union address to congress on tuesday. then he hits the road. bill plante is at the white house tonight. bill, good evening to you. >> good evening, jeff, well first, they wouldn't admit it here but they couldn't be more delighted that gingrich upended the south carolina primary by winning, and that mitt romney lost the middle class voters. because those are the voters that the president is targeting in his state of the union address. president obama is still working on tuesday's state of the union address. but it will sound a lot like speeches he's been making, particularly one he made last month in kansas. a call for economic fair play which his opponents saw as a call to class warfare. this is how mr. obama previewed the speech in a webcast. >> and that's rebuilding an economy where hard work pays off. and responsibility is rewarded. and an america where everybody gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everybody plays by the same set of rules. >> there are likely to be some new proposals in its speech to aid the housing crisis, spur made in the u.s.a. manufacturing and help more people go to college. and the president will continue to insist that wealthier americans pay a larger share of taxes. this year the annual speech to congress is likely to be seen as the keynote of president obama's campaign. though the white house continues to insist that he's focused on his job, not his prospect for re-election. >> but the president's campaign organization is hard at work. they've raised 15 -- 157 million dollars and the president himself is taking his noncampaign on the road for three days following the state of the union message hitting five of the key states that he'll need to win in november. jeff?
