good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. tomorrow, marks the 100th running of san francisco's rowdiest foot praise, the beta breakers and organizers are hoping that the changes they made will ensure it will not be the last. don knapp is along the route with details. hi, don. >> reporter: hi, ann. we're about to find out if people can run across san francisco in a wild and crazy race, and still have fun, without being drunk. because that's the plan for this year's beta breakers, no alcohol, and alcohol-free b2b. >> this year's beta breakers will be the first for peter, his daughter cynthia and friend reva. they came today to check out the course and hay street hill. >> it is a pretty steep hill. pretty long. but then i guess it is downhill from here. so that is pretty good. >> this is the 100th running of the largest and probably whackiest foot race in the world. an anniversary that nearly didn't happen. because drunken rowdies were messing up the city and the race. >> large groups of people would come on the street and try to urinate. and they do so aggressively and angrily when you try to keep them off your doorstep. >> reporter: the race lost its sponsor and has been losing community support. the internet company stepped in and saved the day. the day will be a little different this year. >> we will be exercising with as much discretion as we can, strict enforcement on anybody that is influencing anybody else's good time or their neighborhood. >> reporter: the new plan calls for no alcohol and plenty of bodies. 1200 along the route. people getting bibs and t's at the expo understand the need for rules. >> people running naked and going to the bathroom in the street and drinking and lots of chaos. >> is that going to happen tomorrow? >> i hope not. i mean i'm here to run. >> reporter: back out on hay street hill, reva panda and cynthia ye think about the crowds. >> i don't want to get near them. i don't trust the people. >> i am excited, but then nervous, because of of the hill. >> nervous of the hill? >> yes, but you're walking? >> yes, but yeah, i know. [ laughter ] >> reporter: there are some signs of rebellion under way. a gentleman came by a while ago and with this printout, which is his interpretation of the san francisco police code, which says you should be able to drink beer and run in this race. and now, we would advise getting a second opinion on that. before you bring any beer to the race tomorrow. >> and you know, it doesn't really matter if they tame the race or not, those young girls, each if they're walking, they -- even if they're walking, they will get quite an eyeful. >> i think at that angle, they will, yes. >> don knapp, thank you. people planning to go to beta breakers should prepare for a wet and windy race. meteorologist lawrence karnow on a late season storm that could bring thunderstorms and maybe even snow to the bay area. lawrence? >> yes, we're talking about some cold showers of course, and we've seen the clouds throughout the day today but now look what is off the coastline, a frontal band that is just to make its way onshore. that is going to bring with it some rain overnight tonight, and going to be unsettled and wet, and yes the possibility of some thunderstorms into tomorrow. look at this. computer model. as we take you through the night tonight starting at 7:00 and showers moving onshore and you can see the stronger band off the coastline, that could have some thunderstorms in it. and then about race time, tomorrow morning, becoming more widely scattered showers and it doesn't look like sustained rain throughout the race but it will be cold showers on and off with the possibility of some thunderstorms and some hail out there. >> that is crazy. all right, lawrence. thanks for the update. talk to you in a few. >> highway patrol officers say an elderly man may have intentionally driven his car off highway 1 near stinson beach. the 83-year-old man's car fell about 200 feet down the cliff, just before 11:30 this morning. and the accident forced the closure of one lane of the state highway for several hours. >> we responded out here. and we have a solo occupant. deceased at the scene. chp had the helicopter come in. and rapelled down. to bring the victim out. >> marin county chp believes the accident is a suicide. they are not releasing the man's name until his family is notified. a driver is recovering in the hospital tonight, and after his pick-up truck was hit by a freight train in martinez. the accident happened last night, on the union pacific track that crossed the entrance to the martinez marina. rescue workers had to climb over the train to reach the driver and get him out of the overturned truck. the jaws of life were used to free him. he suffered a leg injury. police are investigating just how the truck ended up on the tracks, since the crossing gates were down. brian stow can finally come down to the bay area. doctors in l.a. say the injured giants plan is stable enough to be flown in a private jet to san francisco. once here, he will be admitted to sf general. why there? it is because of one man, dr. jeffrey manly, he is a neuro surgeon who has specialized experience in brain and spinal injuries. police are still looking for two men suspected of severely beating stow outside dodgers stadium six weeks ago. two san jose state students killed in a university parking garage will receive posthumous bachelor degree's. the 25-year-old and the 26-year-old kyle williams, will be honored. weeks away from graduating. the husband of cindy shot and killed cindy and kyle before killing himself. a concord liquor store owner, store employees, and a vendor, could face charges for illegally selling smoke bombs. a concerned grandmother called the contra costa county fire department after her 11-year-old grandson bought smoke bombs from the store on monument boulevard. the store employees claim they didn't know the fireworks were illegal. they say the store sold the products for about a year. well, they certainly have the positive attitude. >> what are you going to do now? >> seize the world. >> but things could be tough in the so-called real world. the jobs college grads will have the best chance of landing. and on graduation day, one student rises to the occasion. how a wheelchair-bound grad was able to walk in the ceremony. ,,,,,,,,,, i am so sorry... let's just think of warm things...my new- -steak grilled sandwich...piping hot with tender steak, grilled onions, and bourbon barbecue sauce all covered with hot melty cheese on grilled artisan bread. hot...steaky... toasty...melty... this isn't working, i'm just getting hungry. that's working...that's... they have their diplomas in hand. and now thousands of recent college grads are out looking for their first job. anne makovec tells us about their prospects in this tough economy. >> class of 2011! >> the enthusiasm of 2400uc berkeley grads filled edward stadium saturday. >> i love you mom. >> what are you going to do now? >> save the world. >> reporter: easier said than done. >> right now i'm kind of in a moot phase. i'm looking towards graduate school or something like that. >> reporter: keegan wethington now has a degree in japanese history. but he doesn't have a lot of cash. >> right now, i would just like any job i can get. i'm applying for everything. >> reporter: sharon majored in public health and legal studies. >> i don't know. i want to do nonprofit work. i think there is a lot of work to do in that area. we will see. >> what are you going to do to make money in the meantime? >> i'm not quite sure. >> reporter: well, there's hope. a new survey of employers found that companies plan to hire 10% more new grads with bachelor's degrees than they did last year. the first increase in two years. with most of the jobs in tech and engineering and business and accounting. >> is that a job offer you were getting? >> well, not right now but i have a job offer in san francisco. >> vanessa got a job at a financial software company with her degree in political economy. and believes the job market is improving. >> i would maybe think that's true for my friends but they're all really smart people, and i think you know, we're hard workers and we did a lot to try to find the right job for us. >> this will be the dreamers, like you go to college, and of kous, you have a lot of job -- of course, you have a lot of job offers afterwards, but it is a bit depressing but i'm not letting it get me down. >> reporter: at uc berkeley, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> and uc berkeley graduating senior austin whitney has a lot to be proud of tonight. not only did he get his diploma, but he was able to get out of his wheelchair today to walk across the stage, along with 2400 others at today's ceremony. and the engineering professor and a graduate student created the robotic legs that allowed whitney to stand and walk. that is something he was not able to do since a car accident paralyzed him in 2007. >> what these guys all gave to me today, it is overpowering at some points. and just quite remarkable. >> in the future, the exo skeleton leg could be used for rehabilitation, and as an alternative to wheelchairs. the berkeley team named the project after whitney because the important information and insight he provided in the development. well, san jose to san francisco, 40 minutes faster. cal train's pilot project gives commuters a much faster ride. now the agency announces the future of baby bullet. thunderstorms, maybe even some snow? reprisal from the government. cal train says its weekend baby bullet service is so successful, it is going to keep it going. the express service adds two round trip trains to the schedule. it makes seven stops between san jose and san francisco and shaves 40 minutes off the commute time. cal train says weekend ridership is growing ever since it launched the pilot program in january. some of that admittedly is due to the giants season starting. hundreds of families came out today to join in on the fun at the 10th annual tenderloin family fair, good food, and games and lots of fun. proceeds from the fair go to support programs for the hundreds of kids who attend the tenderloin community elementary school each year and sponsored by the group to support low income family. >> the cardinal and fair, good thing it was this morning and not tomorrow morning. >> we had a couple of little girls ourselves who had carnivals. and we are watching it closely but it looks like the storm system is holding off but now, it is looking to make its way toward the bay area. just moments away. some rain may be beginning to come in. and the clouds have been pouring in all day long. looking more ominous all the time as it looks like the raindrops are going to start. if you have evening plans for dinner, make sure you bring the rain coat and the umbrella, you immediate it, folks as we're starting to see the storm system making its way closer and closer. high def doppler radar, picking up moisture near fremont and you can see the main amount of moisture just sitting off the coastline with the main cold front and that is going to be pushing onshore, as we head in toward the next hour or so and it will get wet all around here and there is a responsibility of isolated thunderstorms. a pretty impressive storm system for this time of the year, and it is going to continue to move on by, and on through, and the low will drop into the bay area. that can make for some very interesting weather. as we're expecting the showers to continue well into tomorrow and beyond. and how about numbers outside right now. we have a cool 53. the winds kicking up in pacifica. 58 degrees in livermore. and 57 in san jose. and 58 in vallejo. and if you plan on heading around the state, let's plan for wintry conditions tomorrow. the possibility of isolated thunderstorms into the monterey bay. and the showers into the fresno area. and more rain as you head further to the north and the high country, get this, winter storm warnings in effect up there, and going to expect to see another foot of snow above 8,000 feet. and we're looking at snow down to about 3500. so if you're traveling in the high country the next couple of days, be prepared. it is back to winter up there. some pretty serious stuff over the next couple. here it is right now. you can see the core of the system dropping off the coastline now. and this is likely the path in and around the bay area. that means unstable air will move on through. it will be very cold as it slides on by. so yes, the real prospects of seeing some thunderstorms out there tonight and it looks like on and off tomorrow. computer models, picking up on it pretty well. rolling forward to 7:00. showing some showers showing up around the bay area already. and then as we head through the night, you will see the impulses move by with the cold front. the possibility of some of the thunderstorms. and the gusty winds and some hail. and tomorrow morning, 8:00, you've got the beta breakers. and you've got scattered showers around the bay area. it is going to be on and off throughout the day. the temperatures are going to be unseasonably cool. as we head throughout the day, as those highs generally are only in the 50s. and it looks like more scattered showers will continue to be the case on and off for the day tomorrow, and then it looks like as we get in toward the next couple of day, the cold front moves on by, an then it -- and then it look like things settle down toward the middle of the week. other than that, it looks like things will stay a bit on the wetside around the bay area. over the next few days, as it looks like, yup, we're not going to see high pressure toward the middle of the week. as we expect things to stay pretty wet. it looks like through tuesday, and maybe drying out wednesday and thursday, and next weekend, there is a chance to see more scattered showers and by the way if you plan to head to the beta breakers, it is going to be cold and showers and the possibility of thunderstorms. we are recommending to be fully clothed for that race for tomorrow. that is a look at weather. here is kim coyle with sports. >> good recommendation, all right, the south bay pitcher comes back from brain surgery to throw a won't come until later. a 4 1/2 hour weather delay at the players championship. when play resumed, the leaders were able to get a few holes in. graham mcdowell and rick lawt ner tied for the leader and playing at 7:30 a.m. on the east coast. the sharks series with the red wings will go down as one of the best in nhl history. and it was only the second round. head coach todd mcclel en is well aware the games only get bigger now. >> the games in the series that i've been involved in, the national hockey league, your heart gets going, and it gets revved up. i remember winning the cup and how anxious you get, and i felt that this round. you know, and i shared that with the players. we will need a little more poise, a little more composure moving ahead because those feelings will come back a lot quicker now. . >> the sharks won just one of four regular season games with the canucks. vancouver had the best record at home during the regular season. an the sharks are dead even in the post season, scoring 38 goals and allowing 38 goals. rich martinez was a two sports star at live oak high school until one night he was rushed to the hospital and heard the news every athlete hears the most. >> i was pretty shocked. and when they told me, i wouldn't be able to play contact sports again, so i knew football was out of the question, but i was thinking what about baseball? >> it has often been said that the junior year is the most challenging for a high school student. that was certainly the case last year for live oaks rich martinez. after doctors discovered a brain cyst and had to perform two surgeries in less than a month. >> probably after the first surgery, i just remember i was always in pain. i was laying in bed and they would have to come and wake me up every two hours just to put an iv, the fluids inside me. >> two months later, rich returned to school. but he had one final hurdle to clear before getting back on the field. >> my mom probably didn't want me to play it. because she thought it was too dangerous though. but i told them that i want to play. i love baseball. so eventually, i got to them. >> and everybody was pulling for him that he would be able to play again, because he had such a passion for the game, and we're just thrilled that he is able to still able to compete and obviously at a high level. >> talking to rich, you would never know what he has been through. but watching him play, there is one clear symbol of his past. >> i felt a little unusual, but i got used to it after a while. until i start getting sweaty, it gets a little slippery, but that's fine. i don't care. >> obviously, he has gone through more than what most kids go through in a lifetime but he is young. it puts things in perspective. it is a baseball game. it is high school baseball. so we're out here to teach them life lessons. and you know, he has learned a lot of lessons with what he has gone through. >> rich has been the acorn's best pitcher this season. and a couple weeks ago, the soft-spoken senior made a bold statement on the mound. letting everyone know he was indeed all the way back. >> i was just walking over here, i gave my teammates a high five and stuff and the announcer was like ritchie martinez threw a no -- no hitter and i was like whoa, i did? i was shocked. i didn't know. that is a pretty good accomplishment. it is pretty hard to throw a
