your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. caption colorado, l.l.c. comments@captioncolorado.com welcome. i'm allen martin. an inmate accused of attacking a nurse is now charged with attempted murder. aaron nygard is scheduled to be arraigned today. authorities say the el cerrito man faked a seizure when he was being booked. when the nurse helped him, he allegedly hit her in the head with a lamp. her condition is unknown. she is in the hospital a woman's body is found on the sidewalk in oakland. investigators are trying to figure out how she died. this was at 98th and medford avenues. the body was found about 6:00 this morning. so far, police are not saying if the woman was murdered. a major power outage in the east bay today after a pg&e transformer exploded underground. several thousand customers in concord were still without power just before noon. that's down from 10,000 originally. the blast also threw out power to some stop lights. this all started about 8:30 when witnesses reported seeing sparks coming from a power pole near clayton road and market. fortunately nobody was hurt here. right now, pg&e is making repairs and assessing the damage. but a month after the deadly explosion in san bruno, pg&e says it may need to increase the pressure in the pipeline that exploded. mark sayre is in san francisco, where a decision was just announced. >> reporter: the public utilities commission would have to authorize any pressure increase on the part of pg&e. but this morning the commission gave the president the authority to authorize that pressure increase if conditions warrant. in the wake of the september explosion, the public utilities commission ordered pg&e to lower the pressure on the impacted pipeline by 20%. but since two other pipelines that also serve the peninsula and san francisco originate at the same location, all three pipelines are operating at reduced pressure. and that has regulators and pg&e concerned that if there is a cold snap this winter, some customers including hospitals could possibly lose gas service. the puc voted to give its president the authority to allow pg&e to increase pressure on the lines and that concerns residents like renee morales whose daughter died in the explosion. >> i don't want my daughter's death to go in vain. and i want to continue to work with the community and consider safety first. >> reporter: but the puc president says he will only use the authority if absolutely necessary. >> we also have a responsibility to ensure that hospitals and other critical facilities do not lose gas service. if there are reasonable and safe measures that can be taken to prevent this outcome. >> reporter: pg&e says it will take no actions that could be dangerous. >> our top priority is always safety. we have completed a thorough and comprehensive leak survey of all of our lines on the peninsula in preparation for our work with the commission, including the independent commission, president peavy and all the commissioners here to evaluate whether or not it is safe to raise pressure. >> reporter: now, the puc also made it very clear today that it would not allow pg&e to rebuild that gas line in the san bruno neighborhood. that issue though appears to be moot because the president of pg&e has already sent a letter to the mayor of san bruno saying that the company does not intend to rebuild that pipeline. of course, that is good news for residents. >> he has gone on record with that. mark sayre in san francisco, thank you. well, one down, three to go until san francisco could get its first world series championship. anne makovec at at&t park, where some fans are already lining up and they have been there for hours, huh? [ laughter ] >> and as they sink down toward the south we'll see another chance of showers for the rest of the bay area coming in for the afternoon. afternoon forecast, cloudy, rain showers to the north, high temperatures in the mid- 70s. i'm laughing because dr. kim is supposed to flip the teleprompter. she forgot so she is over there giving herself a hard time. for the bay clouds and a slight chance of showers for the coast. temperatures 60s at the coast, upper 70s around the bay and mid-70s inland. i say warming up because these temperatures are 2 to 3 degrees warmer then yesterday. what's causing the showers is a warm front so we have a leading edge of warmer air. just slightly warmer. for tonight, rain showers again toward the north bay. a chance of rain for the bay and for the coastline. cloudy conditions expected. overnight lows in the upper 40s to the upper 50s. here's a beautiful look at a satellite and our radar system showing that nice low pressure system, nice counterclockwise circulation. you can see that frontal system that's moving in and the showers associated with it. that will be the drill today. a chance of showers throughout the day with mostly cloudy conditions. better chance of widespread rainfall tomorrow once that low pressure system gets closer. today's highs lower 70s in concord, 74 livermore, 72 fremont, 73 in san jose, 68 degrees in oakland, upper 60s in vallejo, mid-60s in napa, 62 in san rafael, 60 santa rosa and san francisco weighing in at 65 degrees. chance of showers today, better chance of rainfall tomorrow. cooler temperatures also expected for friday and saturday, with some leftover showers. sunday we'll see a mix of sun and clouds, some sunshine monday and tuesday. and wednesday, another chance of rainfall. just in case you're thinking about halloween, it is a couple days away. partly cloudy conditions are expected with temperatures from 55 to 65 degrees. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. don't blam dr. kim. i was distracting her with the sauerkraut. >> fun? i. >> thank you. lunch in 10 minutes. thanks, trace. do you know the muffin people? it's an east bay group that feeds the hungry in oakland and as sharon chin reports, it started nearly quarter century ago with this week's jefferson award winner. reporter: call them muffin people. 88-year-old john di palmero's group delivers groceries six days a week to st. mary's center and half a dozen oakland shelters. his mission is simple. >> there is a big need and instead of money, we give them our time. >> reporter: the 30 mostly retired volunteers rise before dawn to pick up expired but still edible food from several store changes. the muffin man admires di palmero's servant heart. >> he is always thinking about others. he never -- nothing is ever a problem. he is always to do anything that's asked of him. >> reporter: the muffin men started in 1988 when the director of st. mary's food program asked john and another retiree, joe stewart to collect- day-old bread and pastries to give to the hungry. john had just retired as a treasurer for a container ship company. >> when i retired, i was aafraid to be a potato couch. now here i am. i wanted to get something done. >> reporter: now, you might be wondering how it is that john's group became known as muffin men. he says it all started with a center that serves homeless women. >> at the friendly manor, they used to bring the english muffins in there and the women that they took care of, here comes the muffin man. that's how we developed the muffin man. >> reporter: the group became the muffin people when women joined a few years ago. as the need for food grew, so did the supply. today the muffin people estimate they give out more than $1.7 million worth of food every year. sister marilyn compares john to johnny appleseed. >> we talk fairly often about planting seeds of goodness and that's what he did so many years ago and it has grown. >> reporter: seniors like brenda whitfield depend daily on muffin people deliveries. >> if it was not for the muffin men bringing the food here every day, my table would be bare to none. >> reporter: a bad back stopped john from making deliveries in person a few months ago. and his muffin man cofounder has died. but john trudges on. >> just to see people, people get happy and being fed, there's it. that makes me happy and that makes the volunteers happy. >> reporter: for feeding oakland's hungry for the last 23 years this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to john di palermo sharon chin, cbs 5. >> you can nominate your local hero for a jefferson award online at cbs5.com/connect. you will find the jefferson awards logo to click for the email form. stay with us. we'll be right back. i'm among 30,000 employees who used to work for hp. i was supposed to retire there. carly fiorina changed all that. fiorina laid off 30,000 people and she shipped our jobs to china and india. i had to pack my bags and i was out the door that night. we even had to train our replacements. she didn't need 5 corporate jets. one hundred million for herself. fiorina never cared about our jobs. not then and not now.
