a san francisco firefighter killed inside a house a second fighting for his life in the diamond heights neighborhood. the injure firefighter is in intensive care at san francisco general. elizabeth wenger reports. >> reporter: good morning. anthony valerio -- we're here at san francisco general where he is in critical condition this morning. he suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. our crews were there yesterday when the fire first broke out. it quickly became an inferno within a matter of seconds this. broke out around 10:45 yesterday morning in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood. the flames moved so quickly in fact the three firefighters were hurt in what's called a flashover. that is heat so intense that it burns at 1100 degrees fahrenheit. what that means is the room ignited around them. it moved too quickly to save the life of lieutenant vincent perez who is a 21-year veteran of san francisco fire. a former marine and previous alameda county sheriff's deputy. with a final salute, his fellow firefighters said good-bye to the 48-year-old. his body was gurneyed out of san francisco general. witnesses told us it was a very chaotic scene when the fire first broke out. >> i noticed three girls went out of the house and there was a little smoke coming out of the garage and i said what's going on? they were calling 911 one. they said there is a fire started downstairs. i started to call 911 too and they got through first. the firemen came 2 to 3 minutes. one fire truck. but the fire grew so fast. >> our hearts are heavy today and will be for a long time. >> reporter: another firefighter, anthony valerio, was critically injured. he is still on life support at san francisco general unable to breathe on his own. we were able to speak with valerio's brother yesterday. >> i was able to go in there, yes. it's -- it's not for the weak minded, weak stomach. it looked pretty bad. >> now, a third firefighter, this time a female firefighter, tracy courtney was also hurt, not badly. she was able to be released from the hospital. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. but frank, this is a reminder of why firefighters are called heroes. obviously a sad day for firefighters everywhere and for people here in san francisco. back to you. >> absolutely. you know, elizabeth, you never know because it seemed like a simple house fire. you think they could knock that down pretty quickly. and yet they have lost one and one is clinging to life. you just never know. >> reporter: very sad. >> okay. elizabeth wenger, she is live in san francisco. thank you. and the firefighters were caught in a flashover in a burning house. that's what happens when the temperature in the fire area reaches 1100 degrees. menlo park fire chief demonstrates the situation in a fire simulator since the flashover starts in the heated smoke in the ceiling. firefighters will probably see jets of fire in the smoke over their heads. >> all those particles that are in the smoke, all the furnishings, products in the room are simultaneously heated to a point where they completely combust. and it's fatal. >> firefighters cut holes in rooftops to try to release the superheated gases that caused those flashovers. and, of course, we'll be following the condition of the other critically injured firefighter. we'll also have extensive coverage on the fire and the chief's entire news conference at cbssf.com. in other news, a man in oakland aims a gun at a police officer and according to police, then leads them on a four-hour search. an officer first stopped that suspect about 8:00 last night near 67th and bancroft. after the man pulled out a gun, the officer fired a shot. police say the suspect then ran through yards and hopped over fences. he was arrested shortly after midnight. sources have told cbs 5 the fbi is about to take over an investigation into alleged police corruption in contra costa county. the district attorney's office plans to announce a major development at an afternoon news conference. the allegations include stealing cash, drugs and guns from police seizures. put away for life. >> today phillip and nancy garrido begin serving prison sentences for kidnap and raping of jaycee dugard. phillip got 431 years to life and his wife 36 years to life. dugard's mother read a statement from her. valero, he is in a battle for his life still this morning he remains in critical condition. anthony valerio is in intensive care. we understand he suffered burns as well as smoke inhalation. as you you see gathered here is out of respect for lieutenant perez and his service to the city. >> reporter: and again, another firefighter anthony valerio is here at san francisco general. he was critically injured still on life support. we understand he is still unable to breathe on his own. we were able to speak to his brother yesterday. doctors told him there is still some hope that he will be able to recover but right now things are still very touch and go. now, a third firefighter tracy courtney a female, was also hurt. not badly though. she was able to be released from the hospital yesterday. but again, just' reminder of how -- just a reminder of how dangerous this job is. you don't hear about firefighters dying on the job every day, but it's a reminder of how heroic these men attacker will have a parole hearing. giovanni ramirez in jail right now on a parole violation. he has not been charged with stow's beating. l.a. police have questioned ramirez's 10-year-old daughter. he claims he was babysitting her at home when stow was attacked at dodger stadium. there is no word on what the little girl told investigators about that alibi. but the lawyer for ramirez is giving the impression that his client passed lie detector tests this week. tonight family and friends of a missing nursing student plan to hold a candlelight vigil in hayward near the place where she was fact people who have free parking as a result of the validation program that we have had in place for many years. and validation will now become quite a bit easier as a result of these changes. >> in the south bay so should be an easy commute working your way northbound 101 into the peninsula. over to the maps, bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on, but as you can see, it is friday light. not a whole lot of activity there. just a few cars there in those cash lanes. again, once you hit across the upper deck into san francisco, traffic actually looks very nice through there. if you are taking the golden gate bridge this morning, friday light, as well. southbound clear, 101, 37 to 580 just about an eight-minute ride no delays into the waldo tunnel. had some early-morning construction but that's wrapping up. still a nice commute through the portion. san mateo bridge both directions problem-free. good conditions between 880 and 101. if you are heading across the dumbarton bridge, nice ride, early-morning roadwork cleared and looking good between 880 or coming through the fremont area and to the dumbarton bridge. antioch seeing some slight delays, typical westbound sluggish through antioch but not as bad through pittsburg, sluggish westbound 20 minutes westbound 580 from the altamont pass to 680. mass transit on time. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain new unemployment report that shows the economy added the fewest jobs in eight months. >> here now with a look at the numbers is jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. jason, good morning. i don't even want to look at what wall street is doing right now. they already had one bad day this week. >> reporter: we did. and let's hope, frank and sydnie, that a lot of that priced in what was expected today. the big drop that occurred two days ago was what adp reported only 38,000 new private payroll jobs in may. turned out that private employers added 83,000 but then we saw local governments cut almost 30,000 jobs. as a result, only 54,000 jobs created in the month of may. that compared to an average gain of about 220,000 jobs each of the prior three months. as a result, the unemployment rate also bumped up again for the second straight month to 9.1%. the key is whether or not this is just a one month blip perhaps a reaction to the japanese supply problems as a result of the disaster in that country. there's also concern about higher food and gas prices. the problem is that if we don't get better job growth, the economy will stall. we need to see 250,000 new jobs created each month to significantly decrease unemployment. let's take a quick look at the stock market since we're on that topic. the dow is down 103, nasdaq down 23, s&p down 11. price of oil also dropping a couple of bucks on that news. we'll see if there is a rally later in the day. it's not a shock. it's a disappointing report but this was foreshadowed this week. couple of ipos, groupon hopes to raise $750 million in an ipo that would value that company at $30 billion. that would be a bigger market valuation than google on its debut. also pandora, internet radio site, hopes to raise $109 million in its ipo coming down in a little while from now valuing that company at about $1.4 billion. frank and sydnie? >> like to have a piece of that , huh? >> reporter: if you can get in early. >> groupon 2.5 years old, i don't know how much older it is? >> reporter: there's a lot of excitement right now over social media companies and we are still waiting on zynga the san francisco maker of farmville, mafia wars, twitter, facebook. linkedin got it all going a couple of weeks ago more than double in its first day but its shares down 17% now. >> what are they selling at now? >> superbug that is showing up in cows. randall pinkston has this morning's healthnet. >> reporter: scientists have discovered a new strain of the superbug mrsa. the research published in the lancet identifies a new strain in humans and in milk from cows. its genetic makeup is different from previous strains so standard tests don't detect it. scientists say the pasteurization of milk will prevent it from getting into the food chain. mrsa bugs are antibiotic- resistant. some children still are not getting required vaccines. new cdc statistics show many kindergarteners do not have the proper two doses of mmr vaccine. some areas in the country show up to 6% of children are not getting vaccinated. you want your child to eat more vegetables? a new study says all you have to do is let them chew. spanish researchers worked with 150 kids and found the children who decided which veggies they ate for lunch ate up to 80% more. so let them choose. those are some of the day's top medical stories. [ male announcer ] act mouthwash restores enamel and makes teeth up to 2 times stronger. act. stronger teeth and fresher breath in every bottle. back at 6:55. flags in san francisco are at half-staff today in tribute to a fallen firefighter. elizabeth wenger is at san francisco general hospital where a second firefighter remains in intensive care this morning with an update. good morning, elizabeth. >> good morning. that's right. that firefighter is anthony valerio. we understand he is in critical condition. we spoke to his brother yesterday. he remains on life support unable to breathe on his own. you know, this fire broke out yesterday morning around 10:45 in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood quickly within a matter of seconds becoming an inferno. in fact, the flames moved so quickly, three firefighters were hurt in what is called a flashover. that means the room basically ignited around them. it moved too quickly to save the life of lieutenant vincent perez, a 21-year veteran of san francisco fire, a former marine and previous alameda county sheriff's deputy. with the final salute his fellow firefighters said good- bye to the 48-year-old. his body was actually gurneyed out of san francisco general. again, another firefighter anthony valerio, was critically injured. doctors say right now, it is not hopeless that he will recover. but his condition is very touch and go. and a third firefighter tracy courtney, a female firefighter, was also hurt. we understand not badly. she was able to be released from the hospital yesterday. again, the cause of this fire remains under investigation. and the mayor did order all the flags all around the city to be lowered to half-staff. frank, back to you. >> thank you. we are pulling for the valerio family to be sure. okay, elizabeth wenger, live in san francisco, thank you. this morning, sources tell cbs 5 the fbi about to take over an investigation into alleged police corruption in contra costa county. the district attorney's office planning to announce a major development at an afternoon news conference. the allegations include stealing cash, drugs and guns from police seizures. a lawyer and friend of jack kevorkian says the assisted suicide advocate died this morning in michigan where he had been hospitalized. kevorkian released from prison in 2007 after serving 8 years for second-degree murder. he claimed to have assisted in at least 130 suicides. jack kevorkian was 83 years old. >> giants home afternoon a series in st. louis. they are coming back in time for a big rainstorm, right, erika? >> i know, you would say that -- >> raincoats. >> late spring, early-morning summer. yes, you do need that raincoat because conditions are going to be wet, folks. we have that system working its way in. it's going to linger starting this afternoon holding steady through tomorrow and sunday, possibly through monday. but then tuesday, wednesday, thursday, a clearup there. partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures. >> at least the rain isn't affecting the morning commute. let's go live right now to the south bay. here's a shot at 85 at los gatos. not bad. 580/680 extra volume most of it out of the altamont pass, accident-free, that's the good news. they turned the metering lights on about 45 minutes ago. nice conditions, cash lanes are a little sluggish but overall pretty good as you work your way across the upper deck into san francisco. >> all right, gianna,er , erika, thank you. a lucky tired dog flying out of sfo the only one who knows how he made a 1200-mile trip to the west coast. >> salinas animal services found buster brown last month. his microchip listed colorado as his home. he got ahold of the owner by mailing a letter. she lost buster last november. she thought he had been eat en by a mountain lion. the owner and animal services have no idea how buster brown made it all the way to california. he wanted a little sunshine,
