Across the street. It happened at around 11 30 this morning on the 300 block of baltimore avenue in the madrone canyon area. The huge redwood caused significant damage to the second story of the house. One person in the house was not injured. The tree also took down utility lines and about 70 customers lost power. Officials believe roof decay had weakened the tree. Overnight freezing temperatures made for a slick commute in the east bay this morning. And it caused a multicar pile up. Take a look. You can see smashedup cars scattered alongside the road near the claremont resort in becker. One car lost control and set off the chain reaction. Comes down shortly thereafter. First vehicle as they are assessing damage, third vehicle comes down and hits the second vehicle and we have a dog pile. All the cars were banged up. Nobody was hurt and police are looking into how the ice built up there. We are live with our brand new one of a kind mobile weathe lab just in time for the cold weather. First our chief meteorologist paul deanno explains another cold night is on the way. Its going to be cold. Tonight it may be the coldest night before significant weather changes move into the bay area over the next several days. Lets talk about another night with the freeze warning in our inland valleys. Another night with the freeze warning in the north bay. And yet another night with a frost advisory in effect for cities of oakland, fremont, hayward and also san jose anywhere along the bay. A frosty night once again. About the sixth one in a row. Heres a look at your lows for tonight. San jose down to 32, 20s for livermore and napa, vallejo 32. And oakland 35 degrees. Behind me is an amazing vehicle. Its the cbs 5 mobile weather lab. Im going to take you inside the lab and show you how it will change how we do weather here at cbs 5, coming up in 10 minutes. Back to you thank you. The cold snap isnt just threatening our crops. Its threatening to put a big dent in your pocketbook. Len ramirez is in Monterey County where farmers are trying to protect crops from damage. Len. Reporter thats right, elizabeth. If youre a farmer in california, just about anywhere in the state you are not getting sleep these past few nights. Youre up worrying about the frost or literally working around the clock to try and protect your plants from the frost. Reporter Salinas Valley farm crews spent the day working to protect crops from another night of frost in a Strawberry Field that seem to stretch the horizon, workers laying down plastic sheets to protect young and tender plants. These kinds of emergency actions are hang on farms throughout california as this damaging arctic blast continues. For the whole state to be hit all on the same day, its pretty rare. Reporter chris drew grows artichokes on this 200acre field near castroville. Last nights 28degree hit was not enough to kill the crop. Open that artichoke up there, and its still good. Reporter but the frost did cause some damage and will reduce shelf life which on this field of artichokes alone is a 2 million investment. The ice sets up on it, it actually damages though outer cells and it just flakes off. The longer the temperature stays below freezing the more damage the artichokes succumb to which the inner vascular tissue will turn black. However, we havent gotten to that stage yet. Reporter still, consumers will feel it at the market. Prices seemed to jump overnight at this salinas produce stand, citrus prices skyrocketing especially mandarins reflecting shortages and extra costs to growers. They started at 2 a dollar now up to 89 a pound, almost double. Reporter onions up from 40 cents to 79 cents a pound. And lettuce potatoes and broccoli are going up, too. Hurts everybodys pockets. Reporter so another frosty night is descending on the Salinas Valley expected to be around 32 degrees tonight. Meantime, farmers throughout california are spending an estimated 10 million on antifrost mitigation measures costs that we will likely see reflected at the market. Reporting live near salinas, len ramirez, cbs 5. And we have headlines around the bay area tonight. One person suffering minor injuries in an Apartment Fire in berkeley overnight. It started shortly after midnight in a fiveunit building on acton street near bancroft avenue. Fire crews put that one out within about 10 minutes. In most places, officials paint over graffiti but on alcatraz, crews restored the graffiti once made by native americans. The images date back to the 1969 occupation of the island by native americans. Park service says the occupation, which ended in june of 1971, was an important part of the history of the island. Its been one month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in newtown, connecticut. President obama marked the somber milestone with a renewed call for tighter gun control. If there is a step we can take that will save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. We have to have stronger background checks that we can do a much better job in terms of keeping these magazine clips with high capacity out of the hands of folks who shouldnt have them. The president intends to lay out his plans for curbing gun violence later on this week. The nra is promising strong resistance to any new regulations. And parents of the sandy hook victims are vowing to do what they can to prevent future tragedies. Together with the Newtown Community they launched a nonprofit called sandy hook promise. It will be part charity and part think tank aimed at finding ways to stop gun violence in schools. Used to be the most schoolkids had to deal with was the occasional fire drill. Now San Franciscos schools are adding another, active shooter drills. The San Francisco Police Department is also gearing up for the possibility of a School Gunman by getting digital maps of all campus buildings. The police say the floor plans will help them in the chaotic early moments of a school shooting. Make it Available Online on a secure website to Law Enforcement personnel responding in the event of an emergency so that, you know, we can get there once we get there, we will know immediately, you know, what the floor plans look like, contact numbers, who the people in charge are, who we can call immediately. Deputy chief says the First Digital floor plans available to police will be in the citys Richmond District with the highest concentration of schools. People have called and said that thats really gracious, noble thing to do. Thats not why i did it. A bay area fire chief is turning down a raise. The motivation behind his unprecedented move. Cbs 5 political reporter grace lee tells us what hes giving something we dont hear every day a north bay fire chief saying no to a pay raise. Cbs 5 political reporter grace lee tells us what he is giving up and what he is getting in return. Grace. Reporter he is giving up quite a lot. This is a guy who dedicated his life to his community, marinwood fire chief starting as a lifeguard in high school and became a volunteer firefighter 25 years ago. Well, now as chief, he is really making headlines by saying no to a raise. Reporter its not the call to fire or a dramatic rescue thats grabbing headlines this time. Its a story about dollars and cents and a guy who said no. People have called and said that thats really gracious noble thing to do. Thats not why i did it. Its just kind of seemed like the right thing. Reporter thomas roach has been the marinwood fire chief for 8 years and gets a third less than most fire chiefs in the area a fact that is not lost on him. My familys here. My kids have been able to grow up around the fire station. So, you know, that to me was always worth a lot more than being able to make more money elsewhere. Reporter and how is his salary in comparison to other fire chiefs in the area . Its on the low side, right . Considerably lower than any others i think in the county. Reporter so when the district wanted to give him a 5 raise on his 105,000 salary, you would think he would take it. But he didnt. No. I couldnt do it. I mean, all the employees in the district park, recreation, fire, everyones working real hard, you know, putting in as much time and effort as i am and they all had to do those concessions also. So it just seemed like the right thing to do. Reporter it has won him respect in the community where he grew up and among the men who work for him. So what did you think when he turned down the pay raise . He tried not to make a big deal out of it. I didnt know about it until i saw it in the news the next day. Reporter would you have stopped talking to him if he had taken the raise . No. He could order me to talk to him. [ laughter ] i wouldnt have a choice. Reporter Good Relationship there. The fire chief isnt crazy. He hopes to get a raise someday. He says he is just waiting for the district to get into a healthier spot financially and thats when he says it would be the right time. Oracle has now released a patch for its Java Software but Security Experts say its not good enough. This is sort of one of the ongoing tensions with java. Its very old. And so as patches are released and they do plug certain holes, other holes may not get addressed. Reporter java is a computer language that allows programmers to write apps and software that can run on virtually any computer. But rosenblatt says most websites today dont use java anymore, even though the rarely used software is likely still running on your computer. So im not going to see a whole lot of impact on my web surfing if i disable java but i will likely be more secure . Absolutely. Reporter and disabling java is pretty easy. On a pc, simply click start, go to your control panel, there you can add or remove programs. Then scroll down to java and uninstall. You can also download the Security Patch from the oracle website, but even Homeland Security has concerns over future vulnerabilities if java is left enabled. The absolute safest thing to do is to disable java. Its a good idea to update at the least. Reporter some people may need java to access some corporate sites and apps and if you are one of them, you should immediately install that update from oracles website. For everyone else, while the Homeland Security warning is directed to pc users, its advised even mac users disable java. Boy. And you showed us how to do it. Simple. Uninstall.
