Gave First Respond ears standing ovation. President obama is there to help this Community Deal with the tragedy. People have been stopping at town memorials all day. While others attended sunday services focused on the tragedy that shattered this tightknit community. Residents leaned on one another as they remembered the 20 first graders and six adults gunned down at sandy hook elementary school. We just all basically hugged each other and said it was going to be all right, well get past it. Reporter but one mass was cut short after someone called in a threat. I wasnt scared. I looked up, and i said, you know, if anything has to happen, protect the kids. Enough of them. Reporter as people here in newtown grieve investigators say they have the best of the best working to gather evidence so they can determine a motive for fridays shooting. We have to have the whole picture before we can say hopefully how and why this occurred. Thats not going to come very quickly. Reporter police say the gunman, adam lanza, shot his mother in the head as she laid in bed, then drove to the school. Investigators say the 20year old had hundreds of unused bullets on him and used a high powered rifle to shoot all the victims in one hallway and two classrooms. To pick on six and seven yearolds is just its beyond horrific. Reporter sources tell cbs news the massacre may have gone on longer but lanza it shot himself in the head with one of his handguns when he heard police coming. Reporter for family members, one of the hardest parts is yet to come. Funerals and services for some of the victims begin tomorrow. I read about one mom who lives in the newtown area. Her children attend a Different School but she said it feels like people need to get back to normal. So what happens tomorrow in the community . Reporter well, school for the children that went to sandy hook will begin, they hope on wednesday, but at another school, it at a place that would be a temporary campus, perhaps, because authorities arent even sure if they will ever have those kids return to that school. But you can imagine for some people theyre not sure if they would want to return to that school, and some kids are even attending some other nearby schools. Thank you. We have more now on that threat to the church in newtown. Heavily armed swat officers surrounded the st. Rose of lima church during the noon masses. It was filled to standing room only capacity when the order came to evacuate halfway through the priests homily. Someone had called to say there was a bomb in the church that threatened to disrupt the mass in a violent way. No bomb was found. There were no injuries, but an elderly woman hurt herself when she fainted in the parking lot. She will be okay. Community members have found another way to express their grief over the tragic shootings. Someone saint memorial of angels on the hill side, one angel for every person kid. Memorials of all kinds are popping up all over town. Social media became a problem in the hours following the sandy hook shooting. Connecticut authorities have a stern warning for anyone spreading false information. Theres been some things in somewhat of a threatening manner. It is important to know that we have discussed with federal authorities that these issues are crimes, they will be investigated statewide and federally, and prosecution will take place when people perpetrating this information are identified. Officials say the misinformation has been showing up on social media and includes people posing as the shooter and mimicking the crime and the crime scene. At Church Services around the nation today worshipers prayed for the victims of the connecticut massacre and tried to find comfort. Cbs4 spoke with parishioners at st. Marys cathedral in san francisco. Its times like tease that our faith becomes apparent. The important thing is not to lose hope. Reporter people with heavy hearts came to st. Marys cathedral for comfort and community. My heart is full of sorrow, and im here for my family to hug my children and be blessed. Reporter the church put up a memorial to the people that died in connecticut with white ribbons and a prayer for their souls. Our hearts are all torn. How can anybody really hurt kids . The church has a book where you can write and register your prayers. There are a lot of words. We are going to now join cbss special report. The president is about to speak in sandy hook. Thank you, governor. To all of the families, First Responders, to the community of newtown, clergy, guests. Scripture tells us, do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For light and momentarily troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what sun seen. Since what is seen is temporary but what sun seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from god. An eternal house in heaven not built by human hands. We gather here in memory of 20 beautiful children and six remarkable adults. They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school. In a quiet town full of good and decent people that could be any town in america. Here in newtown, i come to offer the love and prayers of the nation. I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts. I can only hope it helps for you to know that youre not alone in your grief. That our world, too has been torn apart. That all across this land of ours, we have wept with you. We pulled our children tight. And you must know that whatever measure of comfort we can provide, we will provide. Whatever portion of sadness that we can share with you to ease this heavy load, we will gladly bear it. Newtown, you are not alone. As these difficult days have unfolded, weve also inspired us. With stories of strength and resolve. And sacrifice. We know that when danger arrived in the halls of sandy hook elementary, the schools staff did not flinch. They did not hesitate. Dawn hochsprung and mary sherlach, vicki soto, lauren russo, rachel and anne marie murphy, they responded as we all hope we might respond in such terrifying circumstances. With courage and with love. Giving their lives to protect the children in their care. We know that there were other teachers who barricaded themselves inside classrooms and kept steady through it all. And reassured their students by saying, wait for the good guys, theyre coming. Show me your smile. And we know that good guys came. The First Responders who raced to the scene, helping to guide those in harms way to safety and comfort those in need, holding at bay their own shock and their own trauma, because they had a job to do. And others needed them more. And then there were the scenes of the School Children helping one another, holding each other, dutifully following instructions in the way that Young Children sometimes do. One child even trying to encourage a grownup by saying, i know karate, so its okay 0, ill lead the way out. As a community, youve inspired us, newtown, in the face of indescribable violence, in the face of unconscionable evil. Youve looked out for each other, and you cared for one another. And youve loved one another. This is how newtown will be remembered. And with time and gods grace that love will see you through. But we as a nation, we are left with some hard questions someone once described the joy and anxiety of parenthood as the equivalent of having your heart outside of your body all the time. , walking around. With their very first cry, this most precious, vital part of ourselves, our child, is suddenly exposed to the world, to possible mishap or malice. And every parent knows theres nothing we will not do to shield our children from harm, and yet we also know that with that childs very first steps, and each step after that, theyre separating from us. That we wont that we cant always be there for them. Theyll suffer sickness and set backs and broken hearts and disappointments. And we learn that our most important job is to give them what they need to become self reliant and capable and resilient, ready to face the World Without fear. And we know we cant do this by ourselves. It comes as a shock at a certain point where you realize, no matter how much you love these kids, you cant do it by yourself. That this job of keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something we can only do together. With the help of friends and neighbors. With the help of a community. And the help of a nation. And in that way we come to realize that we bear a responsibility for every child, because were counting on everybody else to help look after ours. That were all parents, that theyre all our children. This is our first task. Caring for our children. Its our first job. If we dont get that right, we dont get anything right. Thats how as a society we will be judged, and by that measure, can we truly say as a nation that were meeting our obligations. Can we honestly say that were doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm. Can we claim as a nation that were altogether there, letting them know theyre loved, and teaching them to love in return. Can we say that were truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives and happiness and with purpose. Ive been reflecting on this the last few days. And if were honest with ourselves, the answer is no. Were not doing enough. And we will have to change. Since ive been president this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by mass shootings. The fourth time weve hugged survivors, the fourth time weve consoled the families of victims. And in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country, almost daily reports of victim, many of them children, in small towns and big cities all across america. Victims whose much of the time their only fault was beg in the wrong place at the wrong time. We cant tolerate this any more. These tragedies must end. And toned them we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that cant be an excuse for inaction. Surely we can do better than this. If theres even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town from the grief thats visited tucson and aurora and oak creek and newtown, and communities from columbine to blacksburg before that, then truly we have an obligation to try. In the coming weeks i will use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from Law Enforcement, to Mental Health professionals, to parents and educators in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. Because what choice do we have . We cant accept events like this as routine. Are we really prepared to say that were powerless in the face of such carnage . That the politics are too hard . Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom . All the worlds religions, so many of them represented here today, start with a simple question. Why are we here, what gives our life meaning, what gives our acts purpose we know our time on this earth is fleeting. We know that we will each have our share of pleasure and pain, that even after we chase after some earthly goal, whether its wealth or power or fame or just simple comfort, we will in some fashion fall short of what we had hoped. We know that no matter how good our intentions, well all stumble sometimes in some way. Well make mistakes. Well experience hardships, and even when were trying to do the right thing, we know that much of our time will be spent groping through the darkness, so often unable to discern gods heavenly plans. Theres only one thing we can be sure of. And that is the love that we have. For our children, for our families, for each other. The warmth of a small childs embrace, that is truth. The memories we have of them, the joy that they bring, the wonder we see through their eyes. That fierce and boundless love we feel for them, a love that takes us out of ourselves and binds to us something larger. We know thats what matters. We know were always doing right when were taking care of them. When were teaching them well. When were showing acts of kindness. We dont go wrong when we do that. Thats what we can be sure of. And thats what you, the people of newtown, have reminded us. Thats how youve inspired us. He remind us what matters. And thats what should drive us forward in everything we do, for as long as god sees fit to keep us on this earth. Let the little children come to me, jesus said, and do not hinder them, for do such belong the kingdom of heaven. Charlotte, daniel, olivia, josephine, anna, dylan, madelyn, catherine, chase, jesse, james, grace, emily, jack, noah, caroline, jessica, benjamin, avielle, madison, god has called them all home. For those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on and make our country worthy of their memory. May god bless and keep those weve lost in his heavenly place. May he grace those we still have with his holy comfort. And may he bless and watch over this community and the United States of america. Thats president obama giving his remarks in newtown, connecticut, offering love and prayers of a nation. He said the nation is left with some tough questions. The first job of a nation is to keep our children safe, and thats how we as a society will be judged. He said if we ask ourselves if we are doing our job, the answer is no. He also said this is the fourth time in his presidency hes had to address mourners at a mass shooting, and he said the time to make some changes. He said he is going to use whatever power he has in his presidency to work with Law Enforcement and legislators to prevent these tragedies, and as you just heard, he ended his remarks with reading the names of all 20 children who are victims of the newtown massacre. He made it very clear there is a lot of work to be done. Were going to change gears right now. Julie watts is covering the weather fours. She has the forecast. Julie. Well, certainly drizzle out there today, and showers already in the north bay. He lets get right to hidef doppler. Not a whole lot of activity just yet but when you take a closer look at the north bay you can see . Scattered showers. This is just the beginning of whats moving in overnight and stick around through the morning commute. You can see the leading edge of the cold front that will make its way in, bringing with it those showers but a much bigger weather story along with that cold front as well. Notice how the jet stream dips to our south as it does. It is going to usher in cold, arctic air, and that is really going to switch things up for us over the next few days. You think its been cold lately, just you wait. We are talk snow levels down to around 2,000 feet by tuesday, although we will not see as much moisture, snow is less likely than frost. Tuesday and wednesday morning were talking freezing temperatures overnight. Again, this is just the beginning if you have been complaining about the cold temperatures recently. Before we get to that, though, we are dog get to this and that is rain making its way into the authority bay. This is right around 10 00, 11 00. Well start to see scattered showers. Notice the popcornlike cloud structure. This makes its way south, spreading through the bay area. We wont see a whole lot of rain, but we will definitely see slick roadways for the monday morning commute so something to be mindful of as you head out the door. Showers will likely linger, just scattered into the late morning, maybe early afternoon hours, then we do start to see much of the precip diminish. As we move on to the afternoon hours tomorrow, maybe lingering showers, but certainly temperatures relatively cool. Similar to what we saw yesterday. So mid to upper 50s for the warmest locations some spots will struggle to get that warm as well. This is actually going to be warm in comparison to what we see later on this week. So showers for monday. We may see a couple slinggering showers tuesday but the big story will be frost tuesday and wednesday morning. You want one day where we wont see rain . That will likely be wednesday. Even a little bit of sunshine, although temperatures remain cool. Thursday and friday, the rain returns and continues on through the weekend where we will stay soggy and cool, pretty much through the extended forecast we7d day, our one dry day.
