>> reporter: right now it is far from it. this neighborhood has seen about a dozen shootings in just the past two weeks. >> at night we don't go out. we just stay home. >> this neighborhood has been down awhile and it needed a cleaning up. >> reporter: and mayor quan says this will make it safer. the broken window theory. >> neighborhoods where there is public abuse of facilities and where there is garbage, that people think they don't care. >> save a life don't take a life. >> reporter: a few blocks from the mayor a more vocal crowd. >> we are sick and tired of our young people dying in the streets. >> reporter: they do this every saturday and are glad to have the help. >> everybody who is out on the block right now telling the community we want the violence to stop, we are all needed. >> reporter: but a few blocks from there, skeptisism. >> i think it is just for show. it is clean today. maybe because you are here. >> reporter: curbsides like this one on walter street in oakland have long been known as dumping grounds. >> we see condoms so i think there is probably prostitution and drug sales going on hear. >> i believe this neighbor would not be as sad as people think. >> reporter: in east oakland, cbs5. >> and two of the bay area's most prominent chinese politicians will be visitors at the white house. jean quan and ed lee have been invited to honor china's president. international attention the two mayors have received since being sworn in this month. the dinner will be held on wednesday. more than a dozen therapy dogs had their day today at the v.a. medical center in livermore. each dog was given a badge with the number of hours that they have served in the hospital. a nine-year-old black lab was the top dog with 1000 hours. a congressman was there to hand out the dog's declarations and explain how they benefit the veterans. >> if a stranger comes up to you and offerings you something, but if a dog comes up and offers you contact, you put your hand down, you pet back. it is a feeling that everybody enjoys. >> congressman mcnary say the dogs are worthy of being honored for offering vets companionship during difficult times. >> and we will be the transformation. there was a lot of overgrown vegetation and the building was falling into disrepair. and chunks of it falling down on people below. and it is just beautiful now. >> they have done a terrific job. it really is -- it looks well. >> major repairs were done in the 1930s and 1960s. it is a $21 million project funded by a public/private partnership. >> i encourage everyone in san francisco to come down and reexperience it. it has gone from a shabby place to a new revived landmark. >> reporter: the restoration includes fresh paint, even new walking paths. the palace was built to be part of the 1915 panama pacific international exposition. the palace is located in the marina. sonja shin in san francisco, cbs5. it is a sight fuel will forget. a passenger plane floating on the hudson river after a successful splashdown. what captain scully now says about the miracle on the hudson two years to the day. sunshine in most parts of the bay area although some spots with fog. we will talk about that and the forecast coming up next. ,,,,,,,,,,,, two years ago toda they called it the miracle on the hudson. two years ago captain chesley sullenberger successfully ditched a u.s. airways flight into the hudson river after the plane hit a flock of geese. all passengers and crew members were successfully rescued and scully began a hero. he retired last year. in an interview on kcbs radio scully said his gratitude for what happened has increased. >> for everyone on the airplane and their families, i think we have gained a greater appreciation for what we were able to accomplish that day for what happened that day and for what didn't happen that day. we are all very grateful. >> chesley sullenberger says he is still in touch with the crew and passengers of the flight. so getting people excited about biotechnology. sounds like a daunting task but one stanford researcher believes he may have found a way. as kiet do shows us it is like playing video games but only with live micro organisms. >> reporter: xbox and playstation eat your heart out. the squiggly white things are actually a live picture of paramisiium. it is a brand-new field of research that is called biotic video games. >> they are games that humans play. biological approach. in realtime. >> reporter: they are actually controlled by a low voltage electric field. >> if i push this button they feel and move in the direction i push. >> reporter: push right and they go right. push the left button and they go left and so on. he and his team then programmed various video games and then super imposed the image of the critters making them eat food in a pacman like game. direct the ball in brick breaker or kick the soccer ball in a goal. >> i'll be the first to admit this is not like halo or call of duty but use your imagination. imagine what this could be like in a couple of years. >> reporter: he is just trying to get people excited about bio technology. the micro organisms don't feel pain and he insists he is not playing god. >> we can compare them to yeast, baker's yeast we use to make bread and other things. there is nothing technical concerning -- we are not hurting those creatures in any way. they don't have a brain. they don't know the system. >> reporter: he hopes to spur discussions on everything from biology to technology to ethics. it is the brave new world of bioticgames.. >> environmental regulators are trying to find out how much raw sewage leaked into lake tahoe in december. it happened in a power outage during a storm. officials initially reported the lake was only polluted by a small amount of the estimated gallons that seeped out of the a manhole. it was about 150,000 gallons that leaked and significant amount reached the lake. depending on the outcome the north lake tahoe public utility district could be subject to a $10,000 fine. lawrence is back and the one thing not in his forecast rain. >> no rain drops. this is a mid-season dry spell and it is pretty typical. >> we don't need to panic yet. >> there are those that start to say boy we need the rain and we are way ahead of normal right now. but looks like we will get back flew it. i'm looking at the long range models and by the ends we starting to again. enjoy the dry spell. pretty nice in most spots. temperatures into the 60s outside. nice sunset for you. looking for that. if you look down below you can see some of that patchy valley fog again tonight and it will be a concern. if you're traveling in those spots be very careful. it can be thick. out towards the coastline looking hazy out there. sunsetting and looks like we are in for what looks like a good evening in the bay area temperatures mixed bag all around. you've got some numbers in the 40s. and some numbers in the 60s right now in some of the warmer spots. but high pressure overhead and that's holding on and it will continue to do so. weak system diving over the top of this ridge here. other than that looking good for today and a lot of sunshine in most spots. tomorrow a couple of patches of fog. here comes the sunshine. temperatures on the warm side. probably up in the mid-60s in some places. 50s, mid-60s there. out towards the coastline temperature mainly into the 50s. outside right now, some chilly temperatures. 45 degrees right now in concord. they have seen a lot of fog today. but you get to livermore it is almost 60 crees. so big different there. 48 degrees in fairfield. some of that cool air making its way into the delta. 60 degrees in santa rosa. mixed bag of temperatures around the bay ear this evening. that's what we can expect throughout the night tonight. patchy fog. central valley looking at dense fog early in the morning and lifting by the afternoon. sierra, nevada, partly cloudy skies. slight chance of some showers. looks like late in the day for tomorrow but doesn't look like a big deal. about 54 degrees lake tahoe. should be about 63 degrees, partly cloudy skies in the monterey bay. well, it looks like that ridge of high pressure going to stay here. pretty well established here for the next few days. just some fluctuations here. you can see the jet track moving well to the north of the bay area guiding all of the storm systems and keeping us dry right here and that will continue. look at the mild temperatures. places that get the sunshine are going to continue to see the mild numbers around the bay area for tomorrow. and for the next week ahead. it looks like high pressure going to hold on just weakening as we head into the latter part of the week. tomorrow morning we start out with a couple patches of fog but watch what happens. we start to clear things out and by the afternoon looking good. most areas breaking into the sun by tomorrow afternoon so looking at warmer temperatures in many areas. 65 degrees in morgan hill. 62 in fremont. 50s out towards the immediate coastline. east bay numbers will be the tricky ones expecting more sunshine there tomorrow. concord were looking at a high of only 50 today. they could get to about 62 if they get the sunshine tomorrow. about 63 in antioch and 62 in danville. how about the north bay? well, 70 rose in santa rosa. maybe not as warm tomorrow but still nice. 64 degrees there. so let's look toward the next few days here. well, very have got more sunshine in the works. patchy fog. that will be the big concern. weak system diving over the top of that ridge for tomorrow. that maybe just enough to nudge some of that fog out of the way and give us more sunshine by the afternoon. as we head into the week ahead looks like that high pressure holds on through about the better part of the week and keeps us high and dry for least the next five to seven days. by the way, how about martin luther king holiday? we are looking good. just got morning fog early on. lots of sunshine into the afternoon. temperatures upper 50s and some mid-60s and if you've got the day off -- not everybody does -- but if you do, hey, looks like a pretty good day to get out an enjoy the sunshine. enjoy it while we have it, folks. end of the week. once we get back into the rain gain usually opens up again for weeks at a time. enjoy the sunshine while we have. >> we both have little kids so we are happy. >> cabin fever thing. got to get a little bit. a michigan woman put her own spin on the last supper by making art out of laundry lint. she actually loves to do laundry. so when thinking about a unique art project to enter in the grand rapids art prize she found the answer in her drier. she spent a full year collecting dryer lint and spent just over a week glueing the lint under her own replica of the last supper. get this. that piece of art right there made out of lint she told for $12,000. >> [ male announcer ] rockin out to the big hot pastrami. big. hot. pastrami. don't dare call it a cover band -- unless you're talking about covering freshly baked bread with layer upon layer of flavor-packed pastrami. this sub lays down power cords of tasteocity with pickles, mean licks of mustard and riffs of melty, bubbly cheese. catch 'em before the fresh toasted tour leaves town. subway big hot pastrami. crank up the flavor at subway. things come in threes... well the steelers and ravens were meeting for the third time... just saying how much she has enjoyed the playoffs. >> hopefully they will be as good ads today's game. they say good things come in threes. steelers and ravens meeting for the third time. both of the previous games were decided by three points and terrell suggs referred to today's game as world war iii. the terrible towels waving early on. late in the 1st. big ben gets hit as he throws. and it appears to be an incompletion. but while suggs is celebrating his teammate cory redding picks up the loose ball and runs it in for a touchdown. replays confirmed it was a fumble. baltimore would lead 21-7 at the half but a lead that wouldn't last long. the ravens turn it over three times in the third quarter leading the 17 points for steelers. baltimore was held to just 126 total yards and sacked five times. two minutes to go. tied. 13 and -- 13 and 9 for the steelers. ben roethlisberger throws for 226 yards and two touchdowns. three plays later a second touchdown of the game. 24-3 outscoring baltimore in the second half. final chance for the ravens. joe flacco an open receiver. drops it. that's the ballgame. steelers win and headed to the afc championship game. >> we found a way to win and what better than to beat baltimore and put them out of the tournament. they keep asking for us. my mom always said be careful what you ask for. it seems like every time we get in the playoffs they keep wanting to play us and at the end of the day they have got to worry about this loss the whole off season. >> the afc's other game also features a pair of division rivals and we can only hope the game is as good as the trash talk this week between the patriots and jets. >> this is about bill belichick versus rex ryan. there is no question it is about his personal -- >> i may have a little quickness on him. he has probably got a little more strength and power on me. >> he is going to get everything i have on sunday. and if he slips at all we are going to beat him. >> my opinion will never change about brady. at the end of the day it will be what it will be. >> you can't stick your toe in the water. he -- he has great feet. be good little foot soldiers. >> anything goes and i can take it. i'm not going to stress it but i can take it. >> you can see the jets and patriots right here on cbs5 at 1:30 p.m. and stay tuned after the game for the 5th quarter where you can hear more from rex ryan in his post game press conference. lebron james' decision to sign with the heat had a huge impact on the warriors because had he stayed in cleveland wright may no have brought his talents to the bay area. >> whatever it takes. being on the court playing hard and showing everybody what i can do. >> warriors fans had no idea what daryl wright could do when he signed with the team last summer. durell wright. averaging just over 6 points per game. >> it was defender rebounder. wasn't really contributing on offense. here i'm able to do a little bit more. >> the 25 year old is now in the conversation to win. the nba's most improved player award. wright has made more threes than anyone in the nba. 17 points per game. has become one of the most reliable players. >> all that has given him confidence that i believe in, that our team believes in because other avenues where he can do some things on the floor and i think just the confidence of having people believe that he can do more than stand in the corner and shoot three. >> wright, how hot are you?
