"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." a suspect in two recent pipe bombings arrested after a day long standoff. what neighbors say they experienced with a man they call strange. 24 hours after united airlines computer glitch strands thousands all over the world there are still people at s.f.o. tonight trying to get on airplanes. we will hear their stories. >> just have to find your child laying there on your street. breathless. you know. and i couldn't do nothing about it. a wild shootout and a side show that left two dead. the painful campaign for one victim's family to find a killer. i'm er a car on phoenix drive in fairfield may a suspect in two recent pipe bombings. the most recent explosive discovered under a car on phoenix drive in fairfield may 27th. but the suspect is also wanted for questioning about a vacaville pipe bomb left inside a newspaper on castle circle last march that injured a home run. >> reporter: daniel garcia walked slowly out of his fairfield home and into police custody following a seven and a half hour standoff. >> after deployment of tear gas in the house our suspect surrendered and was taken into custody peacefully. >> reporter: but police say a possible threat remained. bomb units standing by just in case. >> obviously want to make sure we are safe. >> police surrounded the quincy lane house after he detonated an explosive device under a parked car in may. a second explosive device was found at garcia's home thursday but garcia was gone. police say he has a criminal history but won't say if he was arrested for making bombs in the past. police are also looking into whether garcia set off a newspaper bomb that named a vacaville man in march. neighbors though are not surprised by garcia's arrest. they describe him as strange, paranoid. they say he even those up on neighbor's doorsteps naked. >> christmas eve at 3 a.m. he ran outside into the streets and stopped actually right here. and was screaming military chants. >> reporter: neighbors also say garcia was aggressive, confronting people on the street. >> he got right in my face and said what are you looking at? >> nothing. nothing. >> did it scare you? >> i said to my husband let's just get home. >> reporter: today those neighbors watched closely as the events unfolded. hoping it will put an end to the problems >> garcia is a bodybuilder and claim he has been arrested for dealing steroids. another man was arrested for obstruction but there is no indication he was involved in the bomb making. a take a look at this video. a pittsburgh home engulfed in flames. firefighters were on the scene within minutes of call but had to back off and pulled a second alarm. the people in the house got out. three people went to the hospital for smoke inhalation. they say the flames originated in the garage. damage estimated at more than a quarter million dollars. more than 24 hours after a computer meltdown paralyzed united and continental airlines operations, don knapp is at s.f.o. where passengers whose flights were canceled last night spent most of today trying to get out. don? >> reporter: ann, the computers are back in line, planes back in the air and still tonight there are people trying to get on flights at s.f.o. what kind of a day was it? they tell us. >> reporter: after 27 hours of trying to get on a plane to rome john was finally heading for the gate at s.f.o. >> my flight to frankfurt got canceled to i missed my connection in rome. and so now i have been waiting here, a bunch of different standbys that i have missed. >> reporter: united airlines computer problem apparently was fixed after just five hours but the nightmare for stranded passengers lingers on. robin goodyear, her three kids and young friend were at wits ends. >> we stand in line forever. they said we could fly from phoenix to boise. but we had to come all the way down to terminal 1 and when we got to terminal 1 they said the flight from phoenix to boise is completely overbooked so they are sending us all the way back. >> reporter: pat hogan says the airline hasn't been much help. >> their computers crashed and they just threw their hands up. didn't know when they would be up. didn't know what they would do with all these people. >> reporter: united says it is working with passengers to rebook or provide refunds but with airlines flying fuller than ever this summer rebooking has been tough. missing flights halfway around the world. >> warsaw was late. and then we went to frankfurt. and then frankfurt put me to san francisco. >> because you were late to frankfurt? >> you are supposed to be in chicago? >> yes. >> how bad? >> it hasn't been bad at all. i got lucky. >> lucky because she got rerooted to san francisco. bumped up to first class. it was almost as good for josh. >> i got here a couple hours early but still missed my flight. i was waiting in line after line hoping to catch another one. >> got to keep a stiff upper lip on this one. >> it is for work so i'm getting paid. get paid by the hour right now. >> reporter: one analyst said united airlines got a break of sorts. the glitch came after the busiest part of the day. not much consullation to the people standed. >> don knapp at sfo, thank you. well, police are searching tonight for the driver in a fatal hit and run. a man in his 40s was hit about 10:30 a.m. this morning on mission near 18th in san francisco. witnesses say the driver fled in a 90s model white chevy minivan. a driver who crashed while being chased by police will be charged in the death of her officer. east palo alto officers say a 25-year-old woman was driving wrecklessly about 10:30 p.m. last night. when they tried to pull her over she sped away. a few minutes later she crashed flipping her suv. the passenger died and the driver suffered serious injuries. please say she will face a number of charges including homicide. what started as a side show on memorial day weekend ended with a shooting that left two people dead. still after three weeks oakland police have made no arrests. the grassroots efforts to solve the case. >> would you like to catch a murder? >> reporter: if the police can't solve a double murder. >> violence everywhere. >> reporter: maybe they can. dozens of volunteers returned to the site of a deadly shooting in oakland. >> to declare a new beginning in the city of oakland. >> reporter: it turned into a crime screen. all captured on a video by a film crew who happened to be there. you can hear the first shot. several other shots followed. l aytoya kennedy and a man were killed in the street. >> to see them lying on the street breathless and i couldn't do nothing about it. >> reporter: the sheer number of people with guns at the investigation made it difficult. this man just walked past the camera gun in hand. >> very possible the person that killed her doesn't even know. i just tell anybody who was out here shooting think about it it could have been your bullet that took this mother's life. >> reporter: you can see they are focused on the female rather than the man that was shot that night. that's because the organizers say his family didn't respond when they asked if they could help. >> peace. >> reporter: those here though say they are representing all victims of crime. >> peace now. >> instead of the police department and fire department just coming and washing the blood away we want to come back and let everyone know that someone actually died on this block. >> reporter: this is laytoya's 11-year-old daughter. >> it is pretty sad. sad. >> what do you miss most about your mom? >> hearing her sing. >> reporter: in oakland, cbs5. two separate shootings in oakland overnight left one teenager dead and a second wounded. an 18-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the stomach. he was taken to the hospital. a few hours later 18-year-old christian garcia was sitting while sitting in a car. he later died at hospital. checking other bay area headlines. a second day of another intense search and still no sign. more than 100 volunteers spanned out in areas of southern alameda county. it has been three weeks since the 26-year-old nursing student disappeared. tomorrow is the last day of this three-day search. a san francisco woman has been arrested in a smart meters protest. an antismart meter group says amy o'hare of glen park was sitting on the hood of an energy truck today and refused to move. o'hare is believed to be the first to be arrested for protestor smart meters. it has been years in the making but today the ribbon was cut on san jose's vietnam town. the outdoor mall on story road is one of the largest in the world for the south bay's vietnamese population much the developer said he wanted it to be the santana row. sad news in the music world tonight. clarence clemmens has died. ♪[ music ] >> clemmens was the sacks player for bruce springstein's e street band and one of the key influences on springfield's life and music for the past 40 years. he was known as the big man both for his size and for his talent. springstein called the loss of his friend and mentor immeasurable. clemens died today after suffering a stroke at his florida home earlier this week. he was 69. politics can make for strange bed fellows and even string governments are still in disarray. in japan 100 days later the misery is still everywhere. >> reporter: three months after the triple disaster and nearly 125,000 remained homeless in schools, civic centers or staying with relatives. while the worst damage was concentrated in just three areas, victims are scattered to every corner of the country. many remain idol without jobs, plans, or hopes. >> reporter: this fukushima resident says they have got our whole down here and that's it and no one seems to have any idea what to do next. the government is rushing to build temporary homes by mid- august. about 30,000 or more than half have been completed so far. but construction has been stymied by a shortage of available land. space is tight because coastal towns are still struggling to clear away debris. less than a quarter of the mess has been removed. it will be three years authorities say before the garbage is gone. the rubble frustrated efforts to find the nearly 8000 victims who are still missing. about 4000 police and soldiers are now scouring the coasts from helicopters and boats. meanwhile at the fukushima plant workers are racing to clean up the tons of radio active water being stored at the complex. without such a system workers can't repair the reactors and stabilize the plant as promised by january. as the plan continues to spew toxic plumes residents even outside the evacuation zone have demanded topsoil be removed from schools and day- care centers. no light at the end of the tunnel yet for a traumatized nation. cbs news, tokyo. well, better late than never pushing towards the east sitting under the influence of this high pressure ridge starting tomorrow. that means warmer and sunnier conditions all around. here is a look at what we can expect for tomorrow. low 60s to high 90s. or to low 90s rather. hot and sunny conditions inland. mostly sunny for the bay. and fog that will evaporate as the sun comes out and then we will see a mix of sun and clouds. let take a look at what we can expect as far as those highs for tomorrow. we are turning pretty much at average then maybe a little bit warmer than average by monday and tuesday. these temperatures run increasing quite a bit. along with that uv index at 9. very high. i keep mentioning this because you definitely want to apply that sun screen often throughout the day. you can get burned pretty easily. 73 for oakland. walnut creek you're expected high 87 degrees. here is a look at our pollen report. high for trees, grasses, low for weeds and molds. looking really good. extended
