[ applause ] good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. the death toll has climbed from the pipeline disaster. today investigators recovered three more people. that means a total of seven people are confirmed dead from thursday's explosion. authorities won't confirm identities but we do know two of the latest victims were found in a home. six people are still missing. meanwhile today, the ntsb spent the day checking out that crater left behind and the pipeline. investigators say the pipe blew 100 feet away from its original position. here's what they are really curious about -- it's made up of small segments of piping. they say they are not sure why. and that will be a new piece of this puzzle to investigate. >> there are lots of reason to have segmented pipe like this. that's one of the reasons we're exploring is why this pipe segmented. it's more expensive to have segmented pipes than unsegmented pipes. we'll be looking into that why that occurred. >> the ntsb is still trying to figure out when pg&e last inspected the pipelines. and for the first time, neighbors had a chance to sound off to bay area leaders. here's what happened at a town hall meeting. >> reporter: people came to demand answers, like when do they get back in to their homes? pg&e told the people it would stand by them and it would never abandon san bruno. 271 homes in the damaged area have been off limits since the blast. by noon tomorrow, those whose homes are not damaged are expected to be allowed in the area that's still considered a crime scene by investigators. >> they will be escorted to their homes. pg&e will provide assistance at each residence in relighting pilot lights and assuring that the utilities are functioning properly. >> they will be able to stay in green tagged homes, get belongings from yellow tagged homes. they will not be allowed into properties red tagged. [ applause ] >> reporter: the spontaneous round of applause was for can bruno's fire chief as he steps to the microphone to answer a question. victims and families came to this meeting with serious issues that were quick to show with their aapplause -- applause appreciation. this was for the city workers. even pg&e received praise for its promise to make whole. [ inaudible ] [ applause ] >> reporter: pg&e's spokesperson says the high- pressured pipeline was inspected on regular intervals. if there is a question of neighbors smelling gas, phone records will show it and they will turn those records over to the ntsb. but another source says it was high risk. the ntsb says it will not produce it report from 12 to 18 months. >> to me, that's unacceptable. we'll get reports as we move forward. that's why i'm going to the route, the public utilities. >> reporter: abel maldonado is asking for inspections of age. >> we can't rush science. we can certainly ask for and demand that we get regular informational briefings on what they have found to date. >> reporter: another news conference expected here tomorrow morning at 8:00 in the bay hill shopping center parking lot as we've been telling you, this has been the scene for the incident command center and for the media for and for folks trying to get -- media and for folks trying to get information. so those folks will know if they can get back in the homes by noon. ann? >> thank you, don. the ntsb got a better look at the aftermath and investigators say the size of the crater left behind by the blast measures 167 feet by 26 feet. they do not know how deep it is yet because it's too unstable to put anyone inside. as for the pipe, the investigators recovered a 28- foot long segment of the 30- inch pipe. the pipeline was owned by pg&e. well, dogs searching a san bruno neighborhood where the gas exploded may have discovered more victims. authorities say the dogs have picked up the scents of nine bodies. but it's unclear what the bodies may be. they could be from dead animals or from the bodies from some of the people still unaccounted for. >> reporter: when news of the blast broke, members of the church nearby were terrified with what they saw. they later heard from one member of the family who was not home at the time but believes her husband, mother and son-in-law were. they haven't been heard from since. >> they have been following odd leads trying to find them at -- they've been to all of the area hospitals. it's been really stressful for the family. >> reporter: they reported these three missing, 80-year- old grandmother lavonnebullis, greg bullis and willie bullis. we're told willie walked with a cane and lavonne had trouble walking. here's one family member live on the news. >> my family lives on the corner of crestmoor claremont. their names are lavon, greg and willie. if anyone has information, please contact channel 5. it's a stressful situation, as i'm sure it is for many families. >> we haven't had reports of missing people. so we're continuing to complete the search. >> it's like are they trying to string out hope for people? are they trying to make the situation seem less than it is? >> reporter: saturday morning, finally, some acknowledgement. >> my understanding is there's still a couple of people that are unaccounted for, a couple. is two right? two. >> reporter: authorities have been saying since it happened that there's still more rubble to go through. they brought out this cadaverrer dog today, a grim task with an outcome unlikery to yield positive arkansas news as members of this church wait for this word. >> in my gut, i think there's more missing than just the bullis family. give us a number, or don't give us a number but don't tell us there are people missing when we know there are people missing . >> reporter: back to you. >> so far the coroner's confirmed the identity of jacqueline greig and her daughter janessa and jess jessica morale less. senator barbara boxer toured the disaster zone and says the explosion brings up serious concerns about the pipelines in bay area neighborhoods and points out some of those lines are more than half a century old. >> when you realize that some of this pipe was laid in 1948, others in the '50s, it raises a lot of questions. there are maps kept by pg&e and they will respond. i asked them that question, if somebody has a question, they have the maps and they can tell you how close you live next to one of these pipelines. >> meanwhile, pg&e said today that there are three of these pipelines running up the peninsula. they are currently doing a special inspection of all three of them. but the utility's president took a grilling from reporters, particularly on whether work crews had done any recent work on the pipelines. >> i'm not gonna be able to confirm whether we did that in that pipeline or not. >> it would be because there was some problem in the pipe, would be the reason why? >> i don't know. >> pg&e also said it's not found any reports that neighbors smelled natural gas in the weeks leading up to the explosion. >> for the latest information on the pipeline disaster go to cbs5.com. is it the body of a missing man or another murder victim in the bay area murder spree?
