Until the weekend. We have the red flag warning in effect for the north bay mountains at 11 00 tonight, continuing through this time tomorrow. The north bay mountains and Solano County will have offshore winds gusting at 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour and humidity levels low enough to elevate the wildfire threat, so we hope that what we are dealing with, we do not see new fires adding to that amount of smoke closer to home. We will take a look at the longrange air quality outlook in just a few minutes. One look outside shows the widespread impact of wildfires. A new study by stanford reveals how smoke wildfires might be wiping out decades worth of progress in the fight against air pollution. John ramos has that story. The smoke that has been choking the bay area is not coming from anywhere near here, but Scientists Say you better get used to it , and there might be big changes coming because of it. Reporter this is what the bay area normally looks like from Hiller Highlands in the berkeley hills. This is what it looked like on this day. San francisco is gone completely usually it pops out , the bridge and the tower and all that. But it is gone right now. Reporter he has a clear view of the smoke from the fires burning up at the oregon border and beyond. He knows that the smoke coming only from nearby wildfires are gone. No, it comes from canada from god knows where just blows down reporter Scientists Say the wildfires induced by Climate Change are here to stay, and a new study from Stanford University shows how much the entire country is being affected by them. The study shows that many of the gains in the fight against air pollution are being erased by the smoke from western blazes. In california and nevada from 2000 to 2015, levels of particulates in the ambient air dropped by 32 , but since 2016 when the first mega fires began burning, the particulate levels have risen by 14 . Is that a little unnerving . Yeah. It is a little unnerving. You realize that we are all connected, whether you like it or not. Reporter that is exactly what the study is getting at. The ability of tiny particles in the upper atmosphere to spread over large areas led researchers to conclude that pollution can no longer be fought on a local level. Quote, these increases in wildfire smoke whwe and others show are expected to continue under a warming climate subvert the logic of traditional and regionallybased regulation. They say pollution will have to be fought from a water view that takes into account the probability of smoke articles coming from a great distance. It was breathtaking news for those walking along the emeryville shoreline. You feel like you want to feel some fresh air, even though it is really windy today. It does not feel fresh at all. Reporter the study says to get fresh air you may have to go indoors. Instead of focusing solely on preventing pollution, more emphasis should be put on avoiding exposure, such as increased use of air filters and buildings. Is that a little scary . Yeah. It is slightly apocalyptic. Maybe more than slightly apocalyptic. Reporter apocalyptic or not, Scientists Say it is the new normal is the progress without we were making on pollution may be going up in smoke. And it is not just happening here. The study says that smoke from western wildfires has either slowed or fully reversed improvements in 35 states since 2016. For the latest on air quality readings in your area and the updated first alert forecast, just head to kpix. Com. Today, Governor Newsom delivered a fiery speech to World Leaders gathered in new york for the u. N. General assembly. It comes amid growing anger over climate activists who say that countries are not doing enough to address the crisis head on. Reporter Michael George is outside the u. N. With the story. This Climate Crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. This Climate Crisis persists reporter gavin newsom received applause as he called out Oil Companies at the climate ambition summit at the u. N. The gathering comes after climate protesters demanded more action from World Leaders. Newsom touted his states environmentallyfriendly initiatives, including a plan to transition to zeroemissions vehicles, but acknowledged that it comes as california suffers from more climate related events. You see a state that is burning up, choking up, heating up with wildfires, floods and droughts. Reporter the secretarygeneral of the u. N. Pressed leaders to change course now. Only leaders who came with concrete action plans were given the opportunity to speak. Missing from the podium at the climate meeting was the president s of the United States and china, the two countries which emit the most Carbon Dioxide. Instead, President Biden reference the issue during a meeting with the president of brazil. We are working in lockstep to tackle the Climate Crisis, including mobilizing hundreds of millions of dollars to conserve the amazon. Reporter the leaders of the 32 countries who did qualified to speak represent only 11 of the worlds Carbon Dioxide pollution. We reached out to the western States Petroleum association, a trade Group Representing Oil Companies. They accused the governor of choosing demonization over collaboration and said that that is not the way to make an effective climate policy. If you drive, gas prices are up in the bay area and some places are seeing prices surged almost six dollars. According to aaa, California Gas Prices have spiked by . 55 in the last month. That is just for regular gas. That is how much drivers were paying at this gas station in san ramon. Uc berkeley professor bornstein says the world price of crude oil is going up and only accounts for 25 of the increase. The rest has to do with what is going on in california. The same thing we saw last fall, where the refinery margins have shot through the roof. It is unclear what is causing this. Usually last year some of the refineries had some outages. Bornstein says that once gas prices go up, it could take a while for them to come back down. He said october could be a tough month. More drama in a tiny Alameda County school district. The District Board called a special meeting today. The agenda included a performance evaluation of the superintendent, who has spoken out against the controversial ban on, quote, special interest flags. Last week the board banned the district from flying flags except the u. S. And state flags. Critics claim the resolution targeted the pride flag. During the meeting last week, superintendent molly barnes spoke in support of lgbtq students, families and staff. This story is attracting attention well outside the Tiny Community of sunol. Coming up tonight, Katie Nielsen breaks down the drama, including how county officials are getting involved. Officials at San Jose City hall said they are railing against hate. It comes as a School Trustee member , now under fire for meeting with a local parent group. The no room for hate rally was led by the Silicon Valley rising organization, councilmembers and other city leaders were also in attendance. They said there is no room for exclusion in classrooms. In our community and in our classrooms we need to be teaching understanding, not ignorance. Inclusivity, not divisiveness. Acceptance, not hatred. District officials are now urging the trustee member to resign. Still ahead, the pentagon now making a major push to repair the harms caused by the militarys dont ask dont tell policy. We hear from one bay area veteran who says this could have a lifechanging impact. Someone from above me in the chain of command telling me that i am not worth anything. A salmon Habitat Restoration product is now underway and was suspended due to low numbers and numbers temps were made over the years to revitalize a dwindling population. Officials hope that the new gravel bar in the American River can create a new spawning ground and help protect new young salmon from predators. Went out fish come back, or fall run is coming back in a month or so. They will get back and they will have fresh, fluffy, clean gravel ready for them to respond. They will lay their eggs and those eggs will be in gravel for a few months. Salmon advocates say the restoration is good but it may not solve the problems threatening the species. In other news, the town of paradise is not just rebuilding homes and buildings but reworking roads. On monday, the first road Rehabilitation Project was kicked off since the 2018 campfire. The works director says that he believes by 2026 they could have the best roads in california. We are excited for the town of paradise to be the only community i am aware of in california that has a plan to pave every publicly maintained road in our community. He says the town got money from fema and the federal highway administration. Crews will work through october before taking a break for winter. It is hard to believe that fire was five years ago there was a memory of people trying to leave off that one road and that is why so many people died, was because they could not get out of town fast enough because that was the only road you could take. That is something you have to be concerned about, as is evidenced by today. There are no major fires burning within hundreds of miles of the bay area, but there is still smoke blowing down from the north. The smoke has been aligned perfectly. The winds are aligned with the coast. The geography of the bay area collected the smoke over the past couple of days. There is a system that is in oregon right now that is dropping to the south. What that will do is intensify the northerly winds. It is also going to kick in the red flag warning as it produces gusty offshore winds. Not just winds but low humidity levels. So we have combined those two factors showing the humidity levels and arrows indicating the wind direction as we go through the rest of tonight. You can see the relative humidity levels, especially for northern napa county do not recover very much. Still staying in the 20 to 30 range. That is the brown color indicating the driest air and the northerly winds helped elevate the fire threats. Humidity levels, again, just drop. By 11 00 tomorrow morning we are talking about humidity is in vacaville and even lower than that as you go into the Higher Elevations above those communities. By late in the day tomorrow the winds pivot and we get back to an onshore breeze which is when the humidity level start to recover. So the red flag warning is through 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Hopefully we get through the 18 hour stretch without fires developing. Air quality is still not going to be great even if we do get through that timeframe without new fires. I think we are looking at unhealthy for sensitive groups air quality across the board on thursday. Fractional improvement on friday. I think it will be another spare the air day into the moderate category on saturday. We should see improving conditions throughout the day on saturday and then by sunday back into the good category. At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel and not an oncoming train. It is unusual to be talking about showers, but the first fall rain chances are heading our way. I think futurecast is probably overdoing the numbers, but a decent chance of some light rain showers mainly monday night into early Tuesday Morning around the bay and the coast and for the north bay. We keep an eye on all of that over the next several days. Right now though we just have to keep an eye on the haze. Temperatures have not been hot to go along with the smoky air. That is a terrible combination. Midtoupper 60s in San Francisco in oakland, also upper 60s in santa rosa , while other areas are in the 70s. Tonight we drop into the 50s across the board, just the warmest locations stay near to 60 degrees. The cool spots are all the way down to around 50 degrees in santa rosa. High temperatures tomorrow are upper 60s and low 70s around the bay area. Close to 80 degrees in san jose and 80s inland and in the east bay. All those numbers are a little bit below average. Not much changed out temperatures over the next several days. Tomorrow is another alert day because of the poor air quality. Even though the best chance of showers is monday night, there will be some raindrops in case the system sneaks in a little bit earlier. That will be accompanied by some of the coolest temperatures we will see for a little bit, but we bounce back quickly, closer to average by the time we hit the middle of next week. Very little change. Staying in the mid 60s even when the rain is falling or the sun manages to break through the low clouds. Up next, how two remarkable bay area women are providing a better life for animals caught in the middle of the war in ukraine. I think it is amazing.
