Going against the trend. Their push to welcome the community and offer a seat at the table. Deebo samuel in traffic for the touchdown. Were counting down to kickoff at levis stadium for the niners home opener. Good morning, im nicole zaloumis. Reed cowan and now i know why. Its thursday night football. He said you two have it. Im going to take the day and kick my feet up and just relax. Prepping to talk nothing but niners today but no hes going to be off for a couple of days. Good morning, im gianna franco. We have you covered and were holding down the fort and of course talking a lot about the smoky conditions weve been dealing with the last couple of days and lets take some looks outside a live look here and you are waking up to more smoky skies on what is another first alert weather day. Its also another spare the air day. Consider limiting outdoor activiti this is whats causing all the problems here. Wildfires burning near the california and oregon border. There are three huge complex fires burning in the siskiyou and humboldt counties and jessica, outlied to take to do off but its a first alert weather day. So we needed to bring you in. Trust us we wont talk niners too much. Some time for weather today. I wanted to take it off for what what you said niners and i get the joke now. Go niners no seriously. Lets take a quick look outside because its a first alert weather day here in the bay area. We are waking up to the worst air quality our local communities have seen in quite some time. Show you your current air quality as i show you temperatures widespread throughout the bay area this morning. Were waking up to mild start and really the temperatures. Its all of that haze that we are still dealing with and waking up to this morning. 50s near los gatos and all the way into the Santa Clara Valley. As we wake up this morning, all along our coast and in the heart of the peninsula, were still dealing with some of the worst air quality too. I mean, unhealthy conditions widespread. Whats interesting about this haze, let me just say this real fast. In the morning hours, when the winds are calm, its actually when we see some of the worst air quality because it doesnt help you know, the winds will actually kick it up and help disperse some of the smoke but this morning smoky conditions in the north bay too. This morning 52 near novato. I want to show you whats happening around the corner because i mentioned yes, unhealthy category widespread throughout the bay area. But this afternoon, were actually going to see just a little bit of the improvement. Watch what happens actually as we head into the next couple of days starting off with our smoke concentration. The fires still definitely swirling in smoke and the north. The winds are moving in from the north too so were seeing some of that directly impact our bay area. But as we head into weekend forecast, im now advancing the clock into saturday. We have an offshore system which will actually help improve our air quality so were going to see dramatic changes in the forecast right around the corner. Now i know a lot of people are heading out to levis stadium for the game tonight. We are expecting beautiful weather when it comes to temperatures and i mean 60s turning into 70s. Plenty of sunshine. But it will be hazy. So take it slow and maybe bring a mask. Extra water too to just keep yourself hydrated. Were going to keep you updated on this forecast for now, over to you nicole. Thank you for taking care of the niners fans. In the north bay, the smoky haze that is just hovering over marin county didnt stop people from going outside for the most part. Longtime locals tell us that this is nothing like the air quality issues that theyve had in the past. And it made some of them realize how lucky weve been so far this season. I think weve all dealt with much worse in the past. I dont think anybody is really freaking out because were lucky that this is all we have for the year, i think im going to be happy to just you know, say this was not such a bad year. This has been such a welcome relief. Im so happy i havent had to use the filters at all. If you are looking for the latest air quality readings in your area, weve posted several links with this story over on kpix. Com. Gianna, what do the roadways look like this morning . So far quiet nicole. And is good. I mean this is the benefit of getting up early and getting on the roadways not a lot of cars out there. And traffic is moving along pretty nicely but always a good reminder to maybe use Public Transit instead of walking or biking to school this morning. If thats your option. So traffic is clear there. Live look at the nimitz. Not too bad. Not too far from here where the live shot is near the coliseum. We had a report of a shot spot. But it was right at the 980 connector and moving along pretty well in both directions. Mccaffrey up the middle. Inside the 10 and in for the touchdown. More of that tonight at levis stadium for the niners home opener. The boys are back at it for thursday night football against the giants. Well, hopefully one of the biggest playmakers will be on the field. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is dealing with a shoulder injury and he could be a gametime decision. Hes already being off to a really good start this season. So fingers crossed. We want to highlight also one of the ways the team is trying to be more inclusive and acknowledge its global fan base as part of the celebration of hispanic heritage month. Shawn chitnis is live this morning at levis stadium with more on the man who helped Spanish Speaking fans enjoy each game. Shawn, good morning to you. You are at my old stomping grounds right in front of the stadium. How does it feel this morning as we prepare for the niners big home opener . Reporter nicole and gianna, good morning. Well, its really exciting to know that they have a lot planned as they get ready to celebrate latino heritage night. Some of the entertainment will be latin artists throughout the game and this is really part of the effort by both the team and the league to celebrate the culture of latino fans, latino players, as well as latino staff. Including one man who is helping the increase the fan base globally. Jesus has been a member of the faithful since well before he moved to the bay area. Born in mexico, he got a 49ers gold jacket from his dad that made him a fan for life. And now he gets to cheer on the team professionally as a playbyplay announcer covering games in spanish. Its amazing. Its its something really special. I dream come true. Reporter he moved to the bay area when he was in elementary school. He studied Sports Broadcasting at San Francisco state and since 2018, hes been working for the Team Broadcasting games each week. Its very important to make people feel part of this and i think that the 49ers do a great job, excellent job with that. Reporter fans are listening in from around the world like mexico, costa rica, and even spain. That makes his job a lot of fun, but it also gives him a great responsibility. A and while jesus takes his job seriously, he still has moments that bring out the child from mexico cheering on his team. During the game we always have like jerry rice on the sidelines and when you look at him its like unreal. I mean, thats jerry rice. You know . Thats the g. O. A. T. Touchdown 49ers reporter jesus developed a catch phrase for big plays. Im like okay [ speaking in a glob al language ] which basically means like goodbye everybody and then touchdown 49ers. Reporter even taught us how to say faithful to the bay in spanish. [ speaking in a global language ] but some terms just dont need translating. When you say touchdown, everybody understands this no matter what language they speak. Reporter its a reminder that regardless of where you live and what culture you come from, the love of the game can unite us all. In sports football in this case brings people together. No matter where you are from. Reporter so you can tell jesus a true fan if you want to listen to his work, when hes broadcasting the game in spanish you can either go to the 49ers website or downloading their app. Gianna and nicole, back to you. All right, thank you so much shawn. We were just talking as we were watching that package about how much energy Spanish Speaking broadcasters have. I mean, its so different to hear it because you know, the goal and i mean, they are so great at the job. Even if you dont understand what theyre saying you can really enjoy the energy and the fun they have in actually calling the games and its nice to see that the niners and other teams too are reaching out to other cultures to kind of provide that playbyplay and that excitement of the game. You look at latin american fans. The niners i think are the top team. Its funny you look at various teams in baseball, in football, when i covered the mariners, they had a huge japanese fan base. And for a reason. So when ichiro came it was like you know the god was out there playing for the mariners and you see that with the 49ers as well with the Spanish Speaking fans. Its the same script but new home for a better ending. The possible breakthrough in negotiations between hollywood writers and production studios. Plus we continue to hear the difficult plight of farm workers. And coming up later, we are showcasing the plight of americas farm workers during our special coverage of hispanic heritage month. And heres a live look on this thursday morning. As the view from Treasure Island looks like the air quality might be getting a little bit better. Right now you are having to hold back on auditions and whatnot. Very much so. Behind the scenes are all affected as well. Fingers crossed they come to some sort of agreement. But i think one thing we can agree upon today is maybe stay inside and watch a little tv. I hate to encourage not getting out and being active jess but with the the first alert weather day its a day to do that. Hard of the endurance on a day like today. Just walking outside to the car yesterday almost a struggle with how smoky and how terrible the air quality was. Yeah, you could feel it in your throat. Absolutely. I feel it this morning and you are going to hear it throughout the next two minutes of me doing this forecast. Lets do this together. The first alert weather day, widespread throughout the bay area. If theres a reason for it and of course its the air quality. Were keeping a close eye on this as multiple fires continue to burn north of us close to the oregon border. Continue to sweep in the smoke into the local communities but current temperatures this morning. All throughout the Santa Clara Valley, were dealing with the little bit of the marine layer slowly creeping its way down into the local communities. San jose, currently sitting at 567 degrees and were sitting at 54 near morgan hill and warming up into this afternoon into the 80s down there. But still it will be a hazy day for us despite the fact that the cloud layer will pull back along the coast and sunnier skies and still going to heat the hue of just haze all throughout the bay area. Heres what were looking at for temperatures closer to oakland. 57 degrees right now and 57 in San Francisco and if we can zoom in just a little bit more so we can actually see santa rosa over into petaluma, upper 40s and lower 50s as we speak. Lets zoom back out and i want to show you what we can expect later into this afternoon. I meaning talking about this air quality throughout the bay area, were still in the unhealthy category. If you were to stand outside in the Current Conditions right now for just about 24 hours, thats equivalent to smoking act three to six cigarettes just to put it into specific. Today is the day to take it slow. Maybe watch a tv show and find fun activity for the kiddos inside. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. This is not related to the smoke by any means but we are under a red flag warning up in the mountains just closer to napa and sonoma this morning. Ranging out into the Sacramento Valley. This will be extended until 5 00 this afternoon and the big reason for it, well, theres some gusty wind right now. Wind gusts anywhere up to around 35 Miles Per Hour and low relative humidity. To match up with that. I mean, usually in the overnight hours we get that nice overnight recovery process. But tonight, were actually not last night we were not seeing that and right now were sitting around 20 for the relative humidity up there. Heres what the winds are doing too. I mean were seeing some gusty offshore winds and thats coupled the dry conditions. Just causes a lot of issues when it comes to elevated fire risk but luckily heading into this afternoon, the winds are going to change gears and by late tonight early tomorrow morning, were going to get that onshore flow again and thats when the red flag warning will actually be eliminated so lets take a quick look at what were expecting for the daytime highs today. Up in the north bay, 70s in the new york city for us this afternoon anywhere from santa rosa over into napa. Beautiful conditions with temperatures and id just wish we didnt have to deal with all this haze. And im sure everyone can relate to that. 72 today in oakland and 60s just near San Francisco. As we head off into the south bay, were actually going to be warming up into the 80s this afternoon. And certain pockets i take that back. 70s throughout the Santa Clara Valley and its the 80s where were going to see that closer off i cant speak this morning. 80s off near antioch and thats where were going to be seeing some of the warmest temperatures this afternoon. 70s just near vallejo. Back over to you, g. All right. Thank you taking a look at the roadways right now. And of course you have a big game tonight a lot of people will be heading down for the niners game. So start thinking about the plan as you get ready to head down there this afternoon. And kickoff is going to be right in the middle of drive times so 5 15. So thats going to be tough for a lot of people just navigating those freeways anyway with a lot of people coming home from work. And maybe even after school. So 237, 101 and 880. Routes to kind of lead to the area, lead to levis stadium, definitely give yourself extra time. Public transit always a great way. All options for tonights game which the kickoff is at 5 15. So if you are tailgating definitely get out there early and have fun. Wish i was going. Getting a live look now at the rest of the bay area, at the bay bridge, looking good so far. No delays heading into the San Francisco. Traffic moving along really nicely and in fact most of the bridges are pretty quiet this morning. You can see 880, both directions its clear as well. So if you are using this to get to the san mateo bridge right now is a good time to be out there on the freeways roadways, no delays or issues. This is right around the coliseum and just south of here, traffic is moving along nicely as well as you head through there. Now headed into the Altamont Pass this morning, just a headsup. We are getting reports of a trouble spot. Theres a crash westbound 580 right before 1st street blocking one lane still pretty lightly traveled but might get busier until lanes clear through there. Lets get a live look outside right now at levis stadium. The bay area getting pumped for a niners home opener tonight. Where the competition is already coming in hurt. Right now on cbs news bay area, it is 5 30 and that smoke is sticking around again. On this first alert weather day. Its important to note its also another spare the air day which means you might want to consider limiting your Outdoor Activities. And why are we still dealing with this smoky sky . This is whats causing all the problems. Wildfires burning near the california and oregon border there are three huge complex fires. Burning in the siskiyou and hum belt counties. Kind of interesting to note how far away those fires are but yet with the winds and the weather conditions, it can blow that smoke right here into the bay. And you know jess, a lot of people heading down to the niner game tonight. Hows it going to be for them. I know. Actually i have your niners forecast coming up in the next minute. So stay tuned for that. But it is going to be a hazy one for us today not only at levis stadium but widespread throughout the bay area. This morning behind me you can take a look at the air quality map and look at all the red dots on there. That shows unhealthy air quality and your local communities. And in the Early Morning hours when the winds are the most calm, that smoke really starts to settle kind of like water from high elevations into the lower elevations. And thats the reason why were dealing with such bad conditions this morning too. I mean, that smoke will continue to sweep its way in from the north throughout the next couple of days and ill show you that in a second. But this morning, were wake up in the 50s. Closer to oakland, very similar trend sitting at 57 degrees. 55 in halfmoon bay and for all of the communities up into the north bay, its a lot cooler. Were actually seeing low 50s upper 40s. So off to cool start. But its still hazy and you know, the big thing especially with the spare the air day today. Take it slow outside. Today is the day the kind of just you know, find a fanac difficult i cant speak this morning. Its a day to find a fun activity inside and of course just take it slow. Heres the air quality map one more time behind us. The smoke and concentration of it as it continues to sweep in if the north. Throughout the next couple of days. This is friday morning. Notice how it circulates just in from offshore. From the north, now heres the good news, we have a system moving in heading into this weekend. Thats actually going to improve the air quality were going to start seeing that moderate category throughout most of the bay area. By saturday heading into sunday. But heres that niners game forecast. Hazy conditions and 70s in the forecast to kick it off and 60s as it gets cooler in the evening hours tonight. Take it slow and have an extra water bottle and maybe have a mask just june were going to get through this together but definitely a day to try avoiding any Outdoor Activities. But for now over to. All right, thank you. I have an idea. September is Library Card Signup month. Hey, go to the library and grab a book and stay indoors and avoid the smoky conditions. And if you do need to get out and about maybe consider using Public Transit. Especially if you biker walk the school. Now taking the roadways look at this. Its great conditions at the Golden Gate Bridge as far as the freeways go. No delays coming out of 101, clear ride as you head into San Francisco. Its still quite early for the morning commute. So we dont typically see those brake lights. Bay bridge, no metering lights just yet. But thats going to change within the next couple of minutes. Nicole . Its time now for a look at this mornings top stories. Former congresswoman jackie spear is looking to extend her political career with a run for the seat on the San Mateo County board of supervisors. Spear retired in congress in january after 15 years representing the peninsula. If she wins, it would actually be her second stint as a county supervisor. To Alameda County we go, new fallout over a small School Boards vote to ban special flags on campus that includes the pride flag. Dozens of parents and teachers showed up at a lastminute special meeting of the board last night. And they say they dont trust that members are working in the best interests of students. So our Katie Nielsen has been following this since last week and tells us the controversy isnt dying down. Reporter the president of the Sunol Glen School board ryan georgeen sen was flanked by sheriffs deputies leaving the packed cafeteria. The site of the special Board Meeting he was the main backer of a new policy to limit flags at the school. And while he did not want to talk with us in a Statement Released last week, he said schools need to be a place of inclusion where all students are safe. My concern is that when a School Starts endorsing any particular view that can be divisive, then the school is failing its mission. The district should not be seen as endorsing one view over another. Elyse castro was the first speaker during Public Comment and shes the Alameda County superintendent of schools. Theres some questions about moving legal in all and im not going to weigh in on those. But the intent of emergency session, the intent of calling 24 hours, is that theres a crisis. Were having a hard time finding that crisis. Reporter sunol glen is a unique district. Only 20 of students are actually from sue know. The over 80 are from surrounding communities and parents choose to send their kids to the school. Im here today as the only elected voice of the 80 of the families who are commuting from other parts of the county who want to make sure the voices and those perspectives also are raised up. Reporter the flag ban has divide the Small Community in the southern portion of unincorporated Alameda County. Parents showing up in force to raise concerns about the direction the school board is going. One in attendance bus erin whose three kids go to sunol glen. She worries the two members of the school board are more interested in bringing politics into the School District instead of focusing on whats in the best interest of the students. As much attention as were getting for this, this is not really how sunol operates. This is a very vocal and honestly power hungry small minority of people that are trying to push what they want into our school. I am deeply troubled by culture wars coming to the classroom. The more we bring politics in, the less we create those opportunities for joyful learning in the classroom. Well, we did talk with a handful of people who showed up in support of the school board. But they did inspect want to speak with us on camera. Meanwhile group of sunol residents say they are already working on a recall for two of the three Board Members including the board president. We are continuing our celebration of hispanic heritage month. And right now, we want to focus on the people working long hours in fields. Our farmers. Picking the fruits and vegetables that we eat. Oftentimes, they still struggle to make ends meet. In our community, the mass shooting in halfmoon bay put a spotlight on the dire Living Conditions of these farm workers. Thankfully now aid is coming from the state and our Jose Martinez spent a day with the family in gilroy just one of many who could really use that help. Reporter its a journey that started 35 years ago for raul vega. Every day hes here at a farm in gilroy making sure these strawberries can start the journey to your grocery store. But this year, that journey has hit a roadblock because of heavy rains we saw at the beginning of the year. [ speaking in a global language ] he tells me he planted two acres of strawberries this year, but because of the floods, his crops will be delayed. Reporter and with the mortgage payment of more than 3,000 a month, raul cant afford that delay. He managed to buy this house after years of struggle and effort. Now he works at a factory job at night to keep his American Dream live for himself and his family. The need to have better housing, better pay. Better access to medical. Increased human rights. Reporter but it took a tragedy to bring broader attention to that effort. The january mass shooting in halfmoon bay exposed the deplorable Living Conditions countless farm worners faced. Really grateful because Governor Newsom came to halfmoon bay right after the tragedy with the mass shooting. We spoke to him about the conditions of housing here. He saw the images and he saw the photos and he heard the community. Reporter now the Governors Office has announced more than 825 million to build affordablehousing including for farm workers. About 58 communities across the state will receive funding to build nearly 10,000 homes. It has part of a new funding approval process that eliminates the need for a developer to submit multiple applications. This includes 125 million for infield development. It is all part of the statewide housing plan focused on building at least 1 million Affordable Homes by 2030. Its unfortunate that it took Something Like the halfmoon bay mass shooting to really spotlight those dire conditions. I mean, some of the Living Conditions dont even have plumbing. For farmers. So hard about this nicole. Thats all i can think about by watching is we should have been doing this for years until this point. My grandfather moved our family to san jose, those are the fields that he worked in. Years and years ago wanting a better life. And you think about days like today where you deal with the smoke. Those are days theyre not out there working and have the opportunity to provide for their family. They field all the support they can get. Belinda is also shining a spotlight. The Federal Reserve trying a new strategy. Their latest decision on Interest Rates, plus we started to seeless and less of those familiar faces. The central bank is waiting to see what impact previous increases have had on the economy. The fed has raised rates 11 times since march last year in an effort to rein in inflation and fed chairman powell says the central bank is prepared to resume rate hikes in the future. Well, from breakins to hiring struggles to high rents and inflation, San Francisco restaurants are struggling to survive. But as a result some have been raising prices. At least one though is making a point of actually lowering them instead. Lauren toms explains why. Reporter one hour before opening its doors, the team at the restaurant races to get ready for the evening ahead. But this week, theyre hoping to see more familiar faces. Restaurant is trying something nearly unheard of in pricey San Francisco. Theyve lowered their prices for both food and wine. We started to see less and less of those familiar faces. And that became a problem to us when we really did start noticing that. A certain segment of the community had been priced out from at least when we opened originally. Reporter the intention is pure. Tapping intact into the community of the open neighborhood and for coowner david flayfield its personal. I walk through the space and i thought to myself how cool would that be if i opened a business like six blocks where my mom opened her business and my mom still lives like four blocks from here, still like walks here and picks up the produce and everything like that. And Everybody Knows mama when she walks through the door. Reporter a difference you can see. Even only by a couple of dollars, mayfield says the customer will feel it in their pockets. Chopped salad. We have lowered the price on that 6 right . Thats a considerable you know, kind of cost savings to the guest. And you know, for us, we pun intended we need we eat that on that because were handle the savings back to our guests. Reporter but its unlikely to be a trend. He says most restaurants dont have the opportunity to scale their menu away from higher cost items in the way it does. Getting rid of pricier proteins and focusing more on pizzas and pastas. End of the day, its really, really i think important to continuously evaluate what you do and what you value. Is to the community. Reporter that value is seen through each member of their team. Who wont see cuts to their compensation despite the drop in prices. We would rather shut this restaurant down than lower a single wage or lower the quality of our product. Reporter a welcomed shift for the community who can always expect a seat at their table. I mean lowering prices on food and the beverages . You can actually maybe afford to take your family out to eat. Yeah, absolutely. Its a first alert weather day and jessica, i love the teachers at my sons school but yesterday, the pe teacher made him run. I know, when you told me that this morning my jaw dropped. I have been telling everyone stay inside and avoid Outdoor Activities especially breathing heavy. The last thing you need to be running. Pe teachers, what are we thinking . Stay inside and find indoor activities and i remember being able to do pe inside when i was a kid. Im sure we can figure something out. But hey, this is a friendly reminder for everyone today. We are dealing with some of the worst air quality here in the bay area right now. That weve seen in quite some time. So just take it slow this afternoon. Get some, you know, get some activities done inside. But today is the day to definitely take it slow when it comes to any Outdoor Activities and i know thats hard especially when levis stadium is going to be packed for the game tonight. The air quality in the south bay will be just a hair better than the north bay due to the proximity and the distance between us and the fires. So just to put it into perspective, we are still dealing with hazy skies though this morning. Heading into this afternoon. 50s right now into this Santa Clara Valley. 50s near redwood city. And you know in the Early Morning hours, throughout the bay area, the smoke it starts to settle and when we have light winds like we always do in the Early Morning hours, its hard for it to kind of disperse but into the afternoon were going to see gustier conditions and that will definitely help break some of this apart. 57 degrees right now . San francisco and heres what were looking at as we head into this afternoon. Now that air quality is still the biggest concern for us, this is the reason were calling for a first alert weather day, continue to keep a close eye on the smoke concentration. Still sweeping in from the forth and just offshore. But heading into this weekend, we have a new system moving in and that will actually help clear it up nicely. So were going to see a drastic change right around the corner. Were still under a red flag warning right now up in the north bay especially in the mountains closer to napa and sonoma all throughout the Sacramento Valley actually. The reason why . Well, weve been dealing with those winds sweeping from the north and that hot dry air into the afternoon hours matched the low relative humidity with gusty conditions. Elevated fire risk. Thats the big reason why we have this extended into 5 00 this afternoon. Heres the offshore winds were seeing in the afternoon hours too luckily all the way into the overnight hours were going to see winds shift and now pushing in from offshore. Keep a close eye on that. Official sunrise this morning at 6 56. Lets take a look at what we can expect for our daytime highs this afternoon. Starting up in the north bay were expecting 70s from santa rosa all the way off into the napa. Into the south bay we go, into the Santa Clara Valley, very similar trend with 70s there. Into our inland areas, well, we can see some 80s closer to areas like antioch but last but not least into the heart of San Francisco, 60s for us this afternoon. With the hazy skies still sticking around. So lets take a quick look at some pockets of the bay area. Starting off with our inland areas, today were sitting in the 70s and were going to stick in the 70s as we head into the first calm of days of fall. Of course tomorrow is the first day of fall and already starting to feel like it. Expecting 80s by mid next week, for now over to you, g. So unfortunate the smoke isnt so great and the conditions with the air quality. Such a Beautiful Day today with the temperatures. But not so pretty on the freeways unfortunately. Already got brake lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. The metering lights are officially on and its a slow ride for anyone making that ride out of the east bay heading into San Francisco. Via the bay bridge. And yeah, you can see it backing up just to about that mid lot not quite to the overpass. So it is thursday and we tend to see less cars and of course friday tomorrow hopefully things will be pretty quiet. That is the case for now. And of course anything can change if we get a hotspot or a crash and keep you updated. Hey, its game tie. Niners at levis stadium tonight. The home opener so a lot of people will be heading out to the game tonight. It is at 5 15 kickoff. So thats right in the heart of drive time and its going to be really busy for commuters in and around that area. So 237, 101, 880, tasman, all of the surface streets will be quite busy. Definitely plan ahead if you are getting out there early to tailgate. Certainly stake your claim and get your spot early because its going to be pretty busy and sea of red and gold. I cant wait. All right. If you want to use Public Transit always a great option. Vta, great choice in the south bay. Caltrain, b. A. R. T. , even capital corridor have options to get you to the game pretty easily. So start thinking about that. As you plan the afternoon and evening to cheer on the niners. Well, time right now 5 51.
