While. Weve been used to seeing hazy, smoky skies. There is relief in sight from the unhealthy air. Unfortunately tomorrow is another spare the air day, but look at this, the air quality map, showing mostly yellow around the bay area, which is moderate, instead of the orange and red we saw yesterday. Heres what it looks like outside. There is definitely still a layer of haze, as smoke continues to drift here from wildfires to our north, but you can see a bit of improvement, maybe a little more blue sky in some spots. Lets head over to meteorologist darren peck in for paul to tell us when things are going to get better. What did you say, saturday . Saturday. Saturday is going to get better, but we still need to take this seriously the rest of today and into tomorrow. Ill show you why. Ive got an update to the map we showed you which did have mainly yellow on there for moderate across most of the bay. Thats the scene from the top of mount diablo looking over inland contra costa county. The official epa sensor there just went into unhealthy for sensitive groups. All the rest of the official monitors are moderate. Theres a number of sources for air quality information. The epa is the best one. You can also use the low cost sensors. Youre probably familiar with purple air. Heres what those say. Theres a lot more of them. They update more frequently and most of them are unhealthy for sensitive groups now. Heres the takeaway. The rest of today and tomorrow we still have an air quality advisory. It will be a little better technically, yes, but we arent out of this. The next two days take it just as seriously as you have and then theres good news in the long range forecast. You see the plume of smoke heading our way . Its still here through friday. Youll see why i say saturdays the day. Watch the wind blow most of that away. Well talk about the rain chance in the forecast monday. Ill see you coming up in a few thank you. If you want onitor the air quality in your area, we posted several links on kpix. Com in the top story. When it comes to downtown San Francisco, we often hear two narratives. On one hand, businesses are sharing their daily struggle to survive. In fact, today we learned another long timrestaurant is closing after 14 years. Italian restaurant barba co on california street told the chronicle there just arent enough people in the financial district to keep his business going. On the other hand, theres a message of optimism from city leaders trying to find ways to adapt and make downtown a destination again. Today we got a glimpse at one of their strategies to breathe new life into an overlooked alleyway. The plan is to turn the intersection of leidsdorf and commercial street into a new hangout spot for people after work. We spoke to a Business Owner who is cautiously hopeful about the neighborhoods future. [ speaking in a global language ]. My name is hualian saldana. This is my familys business. Reporter this is a good day for the familys business, packed partly with the help of the event the city of throwing outside. Theyve been making this kind of party happen every thursday, which has been pretty nice for us. Reporter nice, but nothing like what lunch and evenings used to look like every day of the week here. This is 30 of what we used to have. Everybodys working from home and its like, you know, we cant make tacos from home. Where you going to get your food . This part of town had not yet burned down three times to the ground. It had not yet experienced the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire and each and every time it reemerged. Reporter with a theme of downtowns long history of recreation, the city launched an expansion of the thursday party idea hoping that the closed streets, live music and overall improved public space will help draw people back more days of the week. Another new plaza is about to open at the foot of the renovated Transamerica Pyramid about a block away. We see so many new Creative Ideas happening, including the ones that we are talking about today. Its awesome that the city is like see seeing what needs to happen. Reporter this street name is a name san franciscans should know a little about. Hes born on the island of st. Croix and made his way to San Francisco. His Business Ventures earned him the accolades to being one of the first black ambassadors for his role as the u. S. Vice counsel to mexico. Reporter that is his great, great, great grand nephew who works for the mayors office. Leidsdorf has an incredible biography mentioned in this mural here. The paint on the street marks the citys original shoreline. So it is a lot of nods to the citys past and everyone who is part of this project acknowledged that its going to take a lot more little pieces like this like putting together a tile mosaic as one person described it to help further assemble the future for downtown San Francisco. Meantime san joses mayor is trying to get people in his city to be more social and connected. He announced the first 20 neighborhoods to be part of a Pilot Program called together sj to get more people engaged in taking an active role in their communities. Well start by investing in neighborhood associations and helping them get into that routine of monthly meetings and reaching out to all their neighbors and bringing people together. There will be a social dimensions to it. Think of potlucks and holiday parties and live music and food trucks and giving people fun social experiences and reasons to come together. The city is using a 1 million grant from the state for this program. It will also Fund Resources like bringing out Crime Prevention specialists to talk to neighbors about how to make their communities safer. Lets get to a developing story. Two people are dead after a shooting at an east bay car dealership today at the toyota of Berkeley Service center, which is usually and actually on albany on eastshore highway between buchanan and harrison streets. Anne makovec joins us with the latest from police. It started at 11 15 this morning. The gunman walked into the dealership and shot and killed a female employee at the service center. Both berkeley and Albany Police responded to the active shooter call and after entering the dealership gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect. That suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, no word if an officer shot him or if it was selfinflicted. Two investigations are underway now. We have a lot of information coming in from the witnesses. We dont have a victim that can give their statement. We dont have a suspect that can give information. So we have to rely on the joint work thats happening from investigators. The Alameda CountySheriffs Office is taking the lead in this investigation. Meantime police are waiting to release the eat of the victim and gunman until their families are notified. Heartbreaking and confusing and a lot of questions. Thank you. In berkeley now some scary moments for someone near the cal campus as police three suspects approached victim on telegraph avenue carrying an ar15style rifle around 6 00 this morning. They took their wallet and phone before taking off in a lexus suv. In san mateo a pedestrian was hit and killed on highway 92 by a chp vehicle last night around 10 00 near delaware street. Authorities say a man was crossing the eastbound lanes from the shoulder when he was struck by the officer. All eastbound lanes were closed early this morning while crews investigated, but have since reopened. Euphoria actor angus cloud died from an accidental overdose, the Alameda CountyCoroners Office confirming his cause of death, saying it was a lethal combination of drugs including methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine. The bay area native died in his oakland home july 31st, his family saying he was dealing with the devastating loss of his father days earlier. Oakland mayor sheng thao standing by her decision to fire former Oakland Police chief Leronne Armstrong despite a new independent report that says there were inaccuracies in the investigations that ultimately led to ar firing, going as far as to recommend the mayor reinstating armstrong as chief, but mayor thao said it wasnt the report that led her to firearm strong, but his lack of action after receiving the report and in her eyes, this new investigation does not change that, but she says its more than that. Its also about getting the department out of its 20year federal oversight. And i didnt and i dont have the confidence that he would be the one to actually lead us out of the federal oversight with especially, you know, not being able to work with our federallyappointed monitor and the judge. The new report, however, praised armstrongs work to get the department out of the federal oversight. Meanwhile mayor thao is touting what opd has been able to do without a chief, citing more than 130 arrests in partnership with the u. S. Marshals and says oakland is taking more proactive steps to stop property crimes like installing hundreds of new surveillance cameras to be able to identify suspects and arrest them. This is really the right way of how we move forward to insure that our community is safe day in and day out. We are taking the criminals off the street and that is what were going to continue to do. But it doesnt appear to be enough for some local merchants in oakland who are considering a oneday strike next tuesday demanding city leaders provide more resources to protect their businesses. Much more ahead. Rents may be going down a bit in some of the bay areas biggest cities, but it may surprise you where theyre going up at a skyrocketing pace. Well tell you. And its a moment family can soak in together, a mother struggling to finish a marathon, the touching moment her young daughter helped her through that final stretch. Took my a any little bit of a break for bay area renters is a good thing. Rents across the region saw their biggest yearly drop in more than 27 months, august rent down 4 in berkeley and oakland, but thats not much consolation for so many people struggling to afford bay area prices. Max darrow takes us to the city recently named the most expensive place to rent an apartment where prices are growing faster than anywhere else. Reporter alex nunez is nearing ten years as a renter in Mountain View. It wasnt cheap to live when he moved here for his job, but rents certainly werent anywhere near where they are now. I dont think its good for the city of Mountain View, for the people that live here to, have rents that are anywhere near the highest median. Reporter according to the latest market data from apartment rental platform zumper, Mountain View has the highest median rent in the entire bay area at 3,360 a month, up 25 year over year, about 600 more than the median onebedroom in San Francisco. Crystal chen is with zumper. The biggest two things are the return Office Policies and supply hitting the markets thats more luxury. So comparing the 25 to the 1 or 2 , it does show its rising so much more. The higher that rents go, its just going to set a new and worsening precedent for the base entry level that it costs to move into a place like Mountain View. Reporter even though there are a lot of high paying tech jobs here, nunez says this is not sustainable. People are making tradeoffs that most people would find rather difficult to do themselves. Reporter he and his wife live in a building that is under Mountain Views rent stabilization rules as it was built before 1995. So they dont have to pony up the type of cash those who live in newer builds have to. If for some reason they had to move and find a new place to rent, he thinks theyd be able to figure out a way to stay, as theyre a dualincome household, but said it would still be a stretch. The one that pains me the most is thinking about a lot of the people who have no choice but to stay here, whether its for medical reasons, family reasons, who arent having high income jobs and have no other recourse than to make very difficult sacrifices to stay. Reporter chen says Market Dynamics could change again. This year its supposed to be a Record Number of available inventory hitting the market across the u. S. So hopefully that will ease up on some of the rising rents, especially by the end of this year. Reporter nunez says Mountain View, but really the region, needs more housing, all forms of housing. Peoples wages have not kept up with the amount that it costs to afford housing. The affordability of new housing is far beyond what a naturally competitive market should be sustaining. Reporter he fears if the situation doesnt change, Mountain View could see more homelessness among other socioeconomic challenges. So we did some more research and looked at more rents. Behind Mountain View, palo alto and cupertino are the most expensive rents ahead of San Francisco where a one bedroom goes for just over 3,000 a month. On the other end of the spectrum, the most affordable city was vallejo with a one bedroom just over 1,500 followed by antioch and richmond. Theres some good news when it comes to buying a home. New numbers from finance website geo banking rates found home prices plummeted in several bay area cities with the average home price in palo alto down nearly 500,000 from this time last year. Dublin prices were down more than 250,000 and san mateo down more than 220,000. Silicon valley tech giant cisco agreed to a 28 billion deal to buy Cybersecurity Company splunk to boost its defenses against security threats that may come by the extended use of artificial intelligence. Thats very true. Well talk about the chance of rain monday, but the air quality changed the last hour and its gone down hill for some of us. Look at the live view, the camera from the top of the Salesforce Tower looking towards san leandro. That doesnt look pretty and this is the place where the air qualitys gone downhill here from when we checked in about an hour ago. I showed you the air quality dial and said hey, the official epa sensors bay areawide were all moderate. This one dipped down now, unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sometimes we pull in a little more smoke when the onshore picks up. Well go to the High Resolution smoke forecast. Youll see why it went downhill. These are the purple low cost air sensors. Theres a lot more of them. Look at the theme, pretty much bay areawide, unhealthy for sensitive groups. Theres a number of different ways to look at air quality, go to the official epa sensors, use these. They dont often give you the same number. Epa is the gold standard. Thats saying most of us are moderate. Heres how we started to dip down for the inland, east bay. Look at the deeper shades of green, stronger onshore flow just pulled in some more smoke sitting off the coast. Its going to stay this way likely overnight. Heres friday, lighter shades of blue. We dont see another inundation thats as strong as today, but we arent clearing the smoke out. The takeaway is theres an air quality advisory through tomorrow. Whatever youre doing to go easy on yourself, keep doing it tomorrow even though the air quality technically might even be a little better tomorrow than it is today. Its still going to be unhealthy for sensitive groups for too much of the day for too much of the bay. Just keep doing what youre doing and by saturday things get better. Temperaturewise were below average, everybody, except it was 81 in san jose. Santa rosa was 10 degrees below average today. Lets talk about the chance of rain. Pacifica is starting to look like fall and here comes the very first system of fall. Officially fall starts tomorrow night late like a little bit before midnight and right after that the atmosphere starts reorganizing itself and by the time weve gotten to sunday morning, theres a beautiful storm off the coast. We can take that forward in the forecast. The best way is just to watch how the map colors in on monday morning because thats when it would likely be the best timing for this, monday morning, most of this rain going up here. There will be enough rain on that smith river complex fire, the one thats delivering all the smoke to us right now, that thing will get 2 inches of rain on it. Thats huge. I dont know that it puts out the fire completely, but it definitely puts an end for now to the smoke inundations were getting from that fire, could be others down the road. Lets come back home. How much rain will we get . Well pull out more detail for the bay. Its maybe 0. 15inch on here for santa rosa, a generalization for what you might see up through sonoma, marin, napa, north bay counties. I dont think wed get anything measurable south of the golden gate, but well watch it. Weve still got a couple days to go, first one of fall and it looks decent. Look whats coming back tomorrow. No matter what we have in terms of haze and well have plenty, well also have the marine layer tomorrow. Tomorrow morning looks very soupy. The marine layer will be more part of the mix than today, but it will be gone late morning and then just haze from the smoke like today was. Daytime highs tomorrow pretty much around 80, almost identical to where we were today. When we look at the sevenday forecast, weve got one more first alert day. That is specific to the air quality. Even if it is better tomorrow, this stuff is cumulative. You dont want to expose yourself to this more than you have to. Just keep doing right by yourself. Maybe put off that jog again another day, you can. Thats the sevenday forecast. See the chance of rain monday. Its not much here, but you got to start somewhere. San jose, you dont even have the chance. It doesnt look like its getting far enough south for you, but inland and east bay valley, maybe a couple hundredths. Back to you. Thanks so much.
