Heres a look from capitola right now where a Ribbon Cutting ceremony was held today for a 7. 7 million project to rebuild and reopen the wharf. Staging machinery, equipment and materials, construction crews have mobilized on the capitola wharf. Especially for me, im looking at it every day, you know, it breaks my heart. I wish i could go to sleep and wake up and it is open. The damage a daily reminder from the destruction of this years storms, leading an iconic landmark unrecognizable. I got a call saying it was destroyed, so i was watching the whole thing, and i couldnt even handle it. The citys plan is not just to repair the storm damage but to make the area more resilient during future weather events. The closure is still affecting the community heavily reliant on tourism business. Its not as busy as it should have been, and i think a lot of people from outside the area think that the beach is still closed, but its not. The repairs are fully funded with measure f money and grants from the state and federal government. Its a community that was and still is affected by tourism, then they step up to the plate. A while enhancements like a new entryway seeding art and lighting are funded by community donations. Everybody has a story, we call it the heartbeat of capitola and its amazing, the outpouring of support that we get from the community. If all goes as planned, the city hopes to reopen the wharf by next summer. President biden is coming to the bay area next week, itll be part business and part fundraising, he will raise money on tuesday before holding a roundtable on science and technology that will happen on wednesday.
