And they have been serving bay area commuters for years. Now is the end of the line for b. A. R. T. s legacy fleet. It is the unofficial holiday for cannabis supporters and users. In the past, people would pack hippie hill to celebrate. So this big celebration is not happening this year because organizers say they cannot have enough to gather for the event. This is not stopping a smoke out. Reporter hey, brian. So hippie hill is behind me there. That hilly area is packed with people right now. I would say about 1000 or so folks. But this is still considered the holiday. You are looking at the flat area. Robin hills in years pass. It sounds like a lot of folks are getting the message to stay away. Peace, love, and a lot of weed on hippie hill. Freedom. Beautiful. Just one everybody. Reporter young and old, they started showing up saturday afternoon. No one knew what to expect this year because organizers did not have the money and canceled the celebration. We like it organic. Reporter that is what people said. They like the non structured environment. No fences. No gates. No large corporations. Debbie and her friend Shanna Leblanc visit hippie hill on 4 20 every year for the last 50 years. We stumbled on it and had so much fun we said lets do it every year. Reporter they said having an official event brings them back to how they use to celebrate cannabis. Everybody seemed happy. The drum circles are going. People are dancing. People are just gathering. Not regulated. Reporter but there needs to be a balance. We do not want a ticket to crazy and shootings and that has happened. We have seen some fights down here that are not that good. Reporter previous 4 20 festivals have drawn dozens and dozens of people. But without an official event this year, the city partner to our sponsor free sporting activities at the meadow. Cannabis users are encouraged to take part. Some think it is a form of crowd control by taking up space. We have got soccer. Corn hole. We have got some bocce in the back corner. We have got some fun stuff. People want to come on the hill and hang out with us, we are down for it. Reporter volunteers also give out free water. Debbie and shanna say, so far, so good. They will be back next year. Yep. We have not heard of any injuries or reports of injuries so far so things are indeed going so far, so good but this is going to go on for a few more hours. Brian, andre, i can remember years ago that this place was filled with a lot of people in the vivid memory i have, it was covered with a lot of marijuana smoke. I just remember i cannot see through smoke. That is how thick it was one year. It is not the case this year. It is for the most part very different and almost like a family atmosphere. In fact, there are some kids who are here as well. There is a playground not too far that is filled with a lot of kids. About 20 feet on that side. That is da lin. Thank you. People also packed into dolores park in the mission district. We saw some groups lighting up there as well. Celebrations have also made their way to the world of modern art. Simply because mama was selling a collection of ceramic bongs and pipes. They are part of a collection called weed ed. For just a few hundred dollars. Earth day is just a few days away and people are showing how they care for the planet. At kaiser permanente, they spent their day planting 100 trees in oakland and people in concord picked up trash along the creek at Newhall Community park. For the most part, the work is being done by people who really live in the community and who call concord home and really care about the place where they live. Organizers say the event in concord was educational for participants as well as the residents know how important it is for their creeks to remain trash free. Also happening on this earth a saturday, oaklands newest team and volunteers help get the new park ready for opening day. Residents worked with the team to pick up the trash and give the field a good power wash this earth day weekend. This comes days after the team got a step closer to a 1. 6 million agreement to renovate the park, and john ramis has that story. Reporter this earth day project in oakland was about more than just cleaning up a city park. It was about starting something new. A group of two dozen volunteers gathered in west oakland to collect trash, power wash playground equipment, and even add some splashes of new color. The park i got in pretty run down over the years, but it has seen a lot of changes lately, thanks largely to the many new Housing Developments that are popping up in the area. Yeah. There are a number of residents here who are excited to help take care of a spot that has been a little neglected for many years. Reporter but the single biggest changes happening right now. A brandnew baseball field is being laid out, soon to be the home of the open bollards, a new independent league team created in response to the departure of the as. Laura giese, the crews chief of staff hopes the 1. 5 Million Investment in the park will help revitalize the entire neighborhood. Being able to do something for the community, by the community, is critical, for me as a person and, i think, for us as an organization. Looking at all the people who have committed a beautiful saturday to come out and clean up this perk is incredible. Reporter even before they come play a game, it is incredible. Many of the volunteers came from the apartments right across the street from the park. Yeah. I think we are all fans already. I think in june, right, it is the first one. We are excited to see the progress of the park that is built slowly and surely. We are excited to see the transformation happening. I want to say so quickly but it has been a lot of work in a long time coming. No. Not a lot of population here. Now, we are seeing a lot more families enjoying the park which is fantastic. We are going to make it something that oakland especially west oakland deserves. This is going to be something that everybody can really benefit from. Reporter but one man who was in the area says while they may welcome the new ballpark, they are leery about how the new investment will affect the neighborhood, especially black residents who have lived there for a long time. Any time you do something new, people who have lived here for a long time, it is scary. They will take over your home or your property because they have got a project coming in. And so the project is what you see behind me. And the people who were there, i dont know. Are they on the street . Or are they moving to a different area . Reporter it has always been the dilemma for oakland, how to bring in something new without pushing out what was already there. In this case, the changes represent a new direction and focus for oakland baseball fans who know exactly what it feels like to be pushed away. Tonight, we are bringing you back to back specials.
