The city of oakland. If the lawlessness is just going too far. Voices of oakland and a community grappling amidst a huge budget shortfall. Will cuts create the oakland people want and so desperately need . Radical left will you shut up man . Weve seen this before. But this time, will it be different . Mute buttons and no audience for tonights president ial debate. The president and his predecessor weve got a preview. I could see that girls needed a safe space to play. Plus, meet a bay area Bridge Builder making sure to keep the power in girl power. We just got so much great entertainments on the maim stage this year. Were very excited about billy porter. And hope, love and pride, the bay area gets ready for a rainbow weekend. What to do and how to stay safe and the importance of visibility. Lets do this, bay area. Yes, indeed. Tens, tens tens across the board and if you know you know. What a great get. Im very excited about that. Im Shawn Chitnis in for gianna franco. Im reed cowan. Its a Beautiful Day and a nice way to start the day by thinking about all things rainbow flag. Right . Absolutely. Were looking forward to pride weekend but we want to start with a developing story this morning. Lets take a live look at this warehouse fire thats burning now for about eight hours in oakland. Possibly with roofing material inside. This is at wood and 24th streets on the west side of town. The fire broke out around 10 00 p. M. Last night at the Pacific Supply warehouse and its near a homeless encampment along interstate 880. Firefighters say the flames started burning outside and then spread to the building. Exact cause and point of origin are still under investigation. The fire went to three alarms overnight and there you can see why. With about 70 firefighters on scene and at one point crews on the roof and inside the warehouse trying to evacuate as the fire became more intense. Heavy smoke prompted warnings to nearby residents to stay inside and keep their windows closed. Firefighters say they have now managed to keep the fire from spreading to an adjacent yard that holds additional roofing materials and the Fire Department said on social media this fire is contained but not yet under control. They will stay on scene through the morning one of many things to monitor. The smell of the aftermath from the fire so before you get your morning walk or roneoed i want to check in with jess. Shes looking at your air quality alerts. Absolutely. I smelled it over in San Francisco this morning. Across and the bay bridge. The first thing i did actually before even finishing my walk with my dog was checking my tap to make sure what is aqi and what is going on and whats the story today. Is it a wildfire . Whats happening in our local community . And im sure many people are asking those same questions as they head outside this morning. Especially off in the east bay. For the most part, were dealing with green on this map when it comes to our aqi but in the localized spot just in oakland alone, yes, were still in the unhealthy and very unhealthy category and just local communities there. So we are going to continue to keep a close eye on this in the next couple of hours. Head over to the Golden Gate Bridge real fast and look at the Clear Conditions for the most part. Visibility at in surface level is great and were off to a cool start this morning. 50s in the forecast right now near San Francisco and across the bay bridge into oakland all throughout the east bay and for the friends along the coast too. A little bit cooler for the friends up near petaluma and santa rosa this morning. Grab the jacket before you have head out. Over real fast a beautiful sunrise behind me over the bay bridge as we wake up this morning. Later today were in the 70s near oakland and 60s near San Francisco. So a beautiful setup into this afternoon with mild weather in the forecast for us today. Were wrapping up the week right around the corner and as we do that, well, were gearing up for a bigger heat wave thats coming next week. So enjoy this weather while we have it. Well have triple digits off in the inland areas right around the corner so 70s down in san jose, not that bad. If you want to do any Outdoor Activities today. More on that in a bit. For now over to you. All right yes, sir thanks so much. A look at roadways right now. Getting ready to take any of the bay area bridges this morning, heres what you can expect as you take the bay bridge. Metering lights are on for our westbound commuters. We are starting to see those gummed up conditions at the toll plaza so its slow there. Here now a clear view of the Golden Gate Bridge. No fog for our commuters coming out of marin county. And it is also clear on the roads. No delays here. So should be a nice drive as you make your way into San Francisco this morning. Reed . From that live shot to this one. A live look at oakland where city leaders are considering a major budget shortfall and they have a painful reality to face. Theyre talking about cuts. So with crime a major concern for the east bay city, the possibility this morning, folks, of cuts to police and fire services. We know you feel that with a great deal of pain. And by the way the clock is ticking. The city council has to pass a budget by tomorrow. So the mayor wants to sell the citys stake in the Oakland Coliseum but if that doesnt go through, plan b. Is that millions of dollars in Public Safety cuts. So heres the breakdown. 26 million potentially slashed from the police budget. What would that do . That would mean a freeze on hiring for 78 sworn officer positions and were also told a freeze on two police academies. Andrea nakano has reaction from members of the police union who say it feels like at least from a policing standpoint, oakland is at a breaking point. Reporter Bishop Bob Jackson with the acts full Gospel Church sees the impacts of crime every day in his community. It really hit home when he received this terrifying news. One of the young men that are that go to the church i pastor, he went to the movies last night and coming out of the movies he was shot and just the grace of god he was not killed. Reporter when he hears about potential cuts to Public Safety, he worries about how much worse crime could get. Law and order has to be restored in the city of oakland. The lawlessness is just gone too far. Reporter according to the Oakland Police officers association, there are two scenarios, one would trim the force down to 678 from 712 officers or all the way down to 628. I cant see a solution on how we can even effectively handle crimes and respond to calls in our city. Reporter opoa president nguyen argues. When there were 50,000 fewer residents. Asking what is difficult for a Police Officer to work here . Its difficult for citizens to live in the city. And thats the question that we have to ask our citizens. At what point is enough is enough . Reporter thats a question that Bishop Jackson contemplates frequently. Hes demanding elected officials at city hall make the city safe. We have to have Public Safety and it has to be priority one. If your city is not safe, its not safe to live in your home, its not safe to go to the store. Not safe to go to the movies. My god. Why are you living in a city like that . Reporter with mayor sheng thao fighting for her own political career, Bishop Jackson doesnt have much faith in the current leadership to get the job done. Absolutely, positively unequivocally not. Reporter the deadline to get the budget done is july 1st. But theres a possibility of extending that deadline if an agreement cannot be reached. All right, so lets get to the other potential cuts. Freeze of five Engine Companies and the Fire Department equaling more than 19 million in cuts there. Now think about that. Oakland firefighters doing battle with the fire we started this broadcast with, they worked all night facing cuts. Firefighters tell us closing even one station there could spell trouble. We have reached a Tipping Point where we are almost unable to do the job that the citizens of oakland expect us to do because we are so busy. And so overworked and responding to so many calls. So making that even worse by closing stations will have catastrophicfects on the citizens of oakland. Wow. So now you see why the plans to try to sell the citys stake in the coliseum is seen by quite a few as a way to at least plug the holes. Oakland city owns half the land and many see the sale as crucial to avoid a total of 60 million in cuts. Who would buy it . Theres a deal in the works with the African American sports and entertainment group. Negotiations we understand happening as we speak but we dont have a timetable about a deal even closing. The former city manager dan lind haim says the real budgets problems are systemic and the onetime relief of the sale of the coliseum is just kind of like a bandaid. I dont begrudge using the coliseum money. If its part of a plan to buy time and were going to do x, y and z moving forward. But if you just going to balance the budget by selling the coliseum, and not do anything else, then you are just kicking the can down the road a year. And then you are in a real disaster a year from now. All right. So that said, remember the budget deadline is tomorrow. But we are hearing that the city council has the ability and just very well might do this. They could give themselves five extra days. So tough time in oakland. Lets put this into perspective. Fbi raid on mayor sheng thaos home and new this morning, revelations about the u. S. Postal service involved in those very raids. So what does that mean . Coming up in our next half hour, our da lin investigates. All right, reed. Time now for a look at this mornings other top stories. That cloud layer is sticking around for us right now. And were going to continue the see that throughout the next couple of hours and lets talk about the winds though. We already mentioned that wind kind of just breezy close to San Francisco. Were currently at around 20mileperhour wind gusts and it die down a little bit just into 10 00 hour and gets gustier into the evening hours tonight. This is around 3 00. All the way up into north bay we go, we have 80s near santa rosa and we cool down a little bit the more south we go near petaluma and novato into the 70s today. Were holding on tight to the 80s in the east bay with 70s from redwood city over into fremont and more of the same down into the Santa Clara Valley. Now as we head into the next seven days we have some changes in the forecast for us. Lets start off with our inland areas and we have plenty of sunshine and a lot of warmth as we head into next week. Lots of sunshine too. And were going to compare this to yesterday. Yesterday we were mid 80s and then we jump in the mid 90s as we head into the friday forecast. We kind of flirt back and forth with 80s and 90s heading into this weekend as early as saturday into sunday. But that High Pressure system is going to roll in fast and thats going to heat us up a lot as we head all the way into next weeks setup. Thats also going thats the big reason also dealing with 80s in sight for us all throughout monday and tuesday just near San Francisco and oakland. They think that former President Trump might actually be doing some more legitimate debate prep than hes letting on. Well have to wait and see tonight how this shakes out though. Jarred hill reporting live from atlanta. Thank you so much for your report. All right, go back to the developing story we are following this morning, its a live look near now at this warehouse fire in west oakland. Its been burning for several hours now. Possibly with roofing materials inside. This is at wood and 24th streets on the west side of town as we mentioned. The fire broke out around 10 00 p. M. Last night at the Pacific Supply warehouse. Its near a homeless encampment along interstate 880. Firefighters believe the flames started burning outside and then spread to the building and an exact cause and point of origin are still under investigation. But the fire went to three alarms overnight and there you can see why with all the flames. About 70 firefighters on scene and at one point, crews on the roof and inside the warehouse had to evacuate as the fire became more intense. Heavy smoke prompted warnings to nearby residents to stay inside and keep their windows closed. Firefighters say they have now managed to keep the fire from spreading to an adjacent yard that holds additional roofing materials. The Fire Department also said on social media that this fire is contained but not yet under control. They plan to be on scene throughout the morning and so we know that this leads to a concern about air quality in that area. And the surrounding parts. Right jess . Absolutely. So were starting off this morning actually with our air quality index and this morning alone, i walked outside when i was walking my dog and i smelted it and there was over in San Francisco which immediately made me pull out the phone and check the air quality in the local communities. What i then found was over in oakland, just in that spot alone, were still dealing with unhealthy air quality right now. So if you live in the community or if you do smell that smoke, just take it slow this morning and continue to drink plenty of water and keep your airways clear and maybe wear a mask and of course keep the windows and doors closed. Right now in oakland were sitting 595 degrees and you probably going to want to grab a jacket anyways heading outside. Along the coast too. Were sitting in the 40s near petaluma and stretching all the way up into santa rosa. Now the big weather story for us actually happens as we head into next weeks forecast. What i mean by that is the daytime highs we have today were right around average. 60s . San francisco and 70s across the bay bridge into oakland with the 80s in the inland areas for the most part. By next week our inland areas will see triple digits anywhere from concord over into antioch. That starts monday of next week. And were going to see a couple of days of that being repeated and well notice that heat all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley too. So really if you have any Outdoor Activities that you have been meaning to do if you want to go check out the new trail thats been on the app for a while. Do it today. Tomorrow, heading into this weekend. While we still have some cooler weather. Ill have more on that warmup coming up in a bit. For now over to you shawn. All right thank you so much. Start in the east bay. San mateo bridge, 8830 in hayward is starting to track some brake lights. So be prepared for a slowdown to work this morning as we take a live look here for our westbound commuters. You can see the brake lights. This is the right hand side on your screen there. Oakland mayor sheng thao was seen in public for the First Time Since speaking out about the fbi raid on her home. She was at a meeting of the metropolitan Transportation Commission in San Francisco. Yesterday, members voted to put a 20 billion bond measure on the November Ballot to boost Affordable Housing around the bay area. Our crew who was there reported she left in the middle of the meeting. Refusing to speak to the media at that event. Week after raid on mayors home and three other properties in oakland, the fbi is still remaining tightlipped. One of those properties is connected to the politically influential duong family and their recycling family cal waste solutions. Our da lin shows us how the irs and u. S. Postal Inspection Service were also involved in at least one of the raids. Reporter election years bring Good Business to the direct mailing agency. But owner johnson says he doesnt care much about politics. Here just to provide a service to do a good job and republicans, democrats. We dont show any political favors. Reporter over the years johnson has printed all kinds of political ads. The good, the bad, and the ugly. But one particular job almost cost him his livelihood. I have been very heartbreaking and very disturbing. Very emotional. Reporter johnson says a couple of weeks before the november 2022 general election, this man, mario juarez a longtime customer contracted him to print roughly 170,000 attack mailers targeting oakland mayoral candidates. Doctored up and my skin is darkened and my eyes are turned red. The eyebrows are pointy in the sort of invoking images of a devil or Something Like that. Reporter johnson says the attack ads went out about one week before the election. He says juarez paid him about 31,000 for his service and gave him three checks to pay the u. S. Postal service for the postage. After the mailers went out, all three checks bounced. Totalling more than 53,000. Johnson says with interest, juarez now owes the u. S. Government roughly 60,000. The usps put a postal stop on my business direct mail permit. Reporter he says his permits remain suspended and the mailer says its funded by mario juarez and has independent expenditure or ie accounts called california forward now. We checked to doe no donated money to the i re account but it doesnt appear juarez filed any paperwork to identify the donors which is required by Campaign Financing law. Webb knows who paid for it. Webb served as thaos chief of staff. But webb resigned from thaos office after she won the election, citing concerns over public corruption. He did an extensive report on her pay the play allegations. The post office is involved with this investigation. Because it was the mail fraud with them using the funding to get those flyers sent out. Reporter webb says andy duong was backing her for mayor and claims duong was and paying juarez to attack thaos chief rivals. She recalled one meeting. And andy was like yeah need to talk to you at about something and mario was like yeah i need some more money. That was his exact words. And he and sheng and mare yes went off to the corner righted of sea breeze where the jack london little place is and stood right there and talked for like maybe 15 minutes. And yeah. And i was like whoa. I know that theyre not supposed to be doing that. During campaigns. The campaign and that ie account are never supposed to work together. Theyre supposed to be two separate total entities. Reporter webb and johnson believe the unpaid postage for the mailers could be one reason why the usps was involved in last weakest raid. I cant speak to the Us Postal Service investigation but what i can say is that to stiff a Small Business based in oakland out of 60,000. Is shameful. Reporter the u. S. Postal Investigation Service forwarded all questions to the fbi. The investigators havent accused the three of any wrongdoing but the Alameda CountyDistrict Attorney charged juarez with one count of felony. For passing bad checks. As for johnson, he is used to printing mud slinging ads. Hes not happy hes caught up in one. Its also an embarrassment to my business to be involved in this type of situation. Reporter mayor thaos spokesperson says the mayor will speak at a later time. We contacted California Waste Solutions for a comment from andy duong and also contacted mario juarez and still waiting for their response. Lauren taylor lost the november 2022 Mayoral Election byless than 700 votes to sheng thao. Assembling to team to run for the seat if thao is ousted. She faces a recall in this novembers election. If the best way for me to serve my city and make sure that we get on top of the issues is to place my name on the ballot for mayor, then thats what you likely see. If voters recall thao the City Council President would serve as the interim mayor. The county Elections Office would then have a 120 days to set up a special election for a new Mayoral Election. And were continuing to dig into every aspect of this case. Well haveny new developments online at kpix. Com and streaming on the cbs news app. Well, looking live at san jose this morning. Where you wake up to news that Police Caught a suspected gang member in the shooting of a couple who were just sitting in their car. Heres the story. 29yearold salvador rodriguez in custody this morning for the shooting that happened on mcloughlin avenue back in march. So the victims a husband and wife, they survived. This is the bad guy. No word on the exact motive. So far, investigators believe the violence was gang related. And a headsup to wouldbe robbers and shoplifters. The state of california through voters could actually make it so that shoplifting would be a felony for repeat offenders. Top democrats though say they want to kill the proposal. They say it would disproportionately incarcerate low income people and people with Substance Abuse issues. Getting the measure on the ballot will be certified by the secretary of state as soon as today if proponents get their way. Also watching closely moves by the Supreme Court this morning. Justices could issue a ruling on a case that could set the rules for how california cities deal with homelessness and clearing encampments. Really try to understand this. An oregon law affects how we in california are able to respond to homelessness where we live. A group of Homeless People in oregon sued the city of grants pass. They argued a ban on people sleeping in public parks violates the constitution. Well, the ruling on that resulted in many in San Francisco and elsewhere in california and leadership feeling like their hands were now tied on the ability to clear encampments that we do see every day in the bay area on city streets. Why . Because the law says we have to first have enough beds to put people in and if we dont, city leaders are forced to just let the encampments stay. So this is actually something mayor london breed has talked about a lot in recent years. Listen. And the fact that the courts have crippled our ability to do our jobs, lets not let a one judge impact our ability to do what all san franciscans want.
