It is a subdued scene here so far, as you can see from chopper 5, maybe 50 to 75 people have gathered here today. I wont even use the word protesters because a lot of people are here to just maintain the peace. To be honest, i believe there are more members of the press here than anyone else. But the people we spoke with are here to stand up for freedom of speech and to make sure things do not escalate. From chopper 5, you can see the various groups that are in mlk park in berkeley in defense of the first amendment. It takes one radical voice to take a whole group down. So i needed to make sure we dont have anybody south here that is acting a fool and trying to bring attention to themselves for personal reasons. Reporter chris cox is a member of bikers for trump. A group that defends the peoples right to protest and denounces violence. He flew in from washington dc to be here today. If indeed this is the birthplace of free speech and they have made it nearly impossible for miss coulter to come here and speak, free speech is dead. Reporter a coalition called the oath keepers is also out here, they want to work with Berkeley Police to keep this a civil event. We hope the police stand up and we can just stand down with a chilly day in the park, but if they stand down, we have standup. Reporter it is all in response to ann coulters appearance being canceled. They couldnt secure a safe space for her. Creating an environment that prevents violence is not censorship. It is protection of free speech. Ann coulter did not take up the offer to have it held at a time when we could ensure safety. The decision to cancel was that of coulter, not the university. Though she is not expected to speak today, there is a chance she will still show up in berkeley. In an email to the associated press, she may swing by to say hello to her supporters. And police will be ready for whatever what brings. The Berkeley College republicans is the group that was going to host ann coulter here and they filed a lawsuit against uc administrators saying they have been discriminated against. They plan on speaking at 1 30 this afternoon. We do know the last canceled event there, it got pretty out of hand. Are authorities there concern about a repeat of that . She has raised over 4,000 already in just a short year andahalf to benefit Pediatric Cancer Research here at the hospital. And we are just so grateful for her support. Reporter she came up with the idea for her head band fundraiser as she made a paper hat for her baby sister and realized it covered her head. People who didnt have hair, it could be good for them. So, that is why i thought about cancer. Reporter the eightyearold makes the puffs on evenings an weekends. Her parents accompany her as she sells them at school festivals, Football Games and craft fairs. She hopes cancer survivors wear her head bands with style and smile.
