[ drumming and music and noise in the background ] reporter not only the mess but tension. The fight broke out in front of me about a halfhour ago. Lets go to that video. The man in the suit actually was wearing a make America Great again hat. Thats the trump hat. And a person stopped right in the middle of the intersection, got out of his vehicle and started beating him up basically, ripping off the hat and it turned into a big fight. The man who assaulted that man did end up getting arrested. But this is just one sort of little popup drama thats been going on here around uc berkeley and the downtown area. You can see the damage, boarded up window at the Student Union behind me and theres a lot of talk right now about free speech rights. Protestors setting off fireworks in the middle of uc berkeleys sproul plaza, to stop Milo Yiannopoulos from speaking on campus got out of control. People Wearing Masks started rioting. A portable light caught fire shooting flames into the air. Demonstrators grabbed barriers and smashed in the windows at the Student Union. This was the view from inside the building for yiannopoulos supporter Cindy Kinkade Sheehan pictured here with him earlier that night. In her video you can see police in riot gear on the second floor balcony. [ inaudible ] reporter once the event was canceled because of the drama outside she and her friends had to exit the building. [ loud had whistles ] [ inaudible ] in the sense that we were definitely targets. Reporter the vandalism continued spilling into downtown berkeley. Rioters hit several banks and atms. We caught one arrest on camera but in general, police refrained from cracking down. Could have incited more violent reaction from this small group of people. We have seen that happen in other communities where, um, where they respond with violence not only to the police but to nonviolent protestors in the crowd. Reporter thats berkeleys mayor who says one of his staffers was knocked down as she was taking a picture her phone stolen. Unfortunately i think this incident has given the conservative right the, um, the image they wanted. Reporter President Trump tweeted last night if uc berkeley doesnt allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view, no federal funding . In response, barbara lee said President Trumps empty threat to cut funding from ucberkeley is an abuse of power. I will continue to stand up to President Trumps overreach and defend the rights of our students and faculty. Reporter berkeleys mayor says he is going to discuss the Police Response with the officials here at ucberkeley. Heres some of the totals over the past 24 hours. Socal in the Santa Cruz Mountains approaching 2 inches of rain. Santa rosa airport was about an inch and a quarter. San francisco a tenth inch. New at noon, this years second snow survey just wrapped up at tahoe with some great news. Surveyors say the snowpack is way above average. Some areas are already above the april accumulation levels, the normal maximum time. They measured water content at 153 of average. Compared to last months snow survey where they measured it at only 53 , surveyors say just within the month of january, our snow levels have more than tripled. A bay area woman is dead after being hit by a car allegedly driven by her boyfriend. Officers were called to the 400 block of ruth court in san leandro. They say that they received reports of a man and woman arguing and that the woman had been run over. When Police Arrived at the scene, they found a woman trapped under the car but couldnt revive her. The womans boyfriend and witnesses are currently being questioned. The backlash against uber is revving up today across the nation including here in the bay area where the company is based. Reporter thats the message from protestors today to ubers ceo as they gear up for a day of rallies outside uber offices in the bay area, new york, seattle and several other cities nationwide. I see a lot of people on social media that are saying they are no longer going to be driving on uber. Reporter protests against uber began last weekend when the company lowered surge prices and told customers they were still working instead of joining taxi drivers who refused to pick up passengers at new yorks jfk airport where two iraqi men were detained after President Trumps travel restrictions went into place. He was to shed light on the design and approval process for millennium tower. The 10yearold building has been plagued with problems and has been sinking and leaning. He served as a consultant and adviser on the project. New at noon, the Us Treasury Department has eased sanctions on the russian intelligence agency. The Obama Administration had put them in place in retaliation for election related alleged hacking. The group has control over imports to russia of devices with encryption technology. Having Something Like this and the ease of access and use is just really groundbreaking. Reporter some of these drones can even track your every step allowing them to take photos or videos as you move around. They will use the gps signal from your phone to track your movements. Reporter cnets Senior Editor josh goldman says pocket drones that weigh less than a half pound dont have to be registered with the faa like larger drones do. They range in price from 200 up to 1,000. With you sharon chin reports but sharon chin reports many are finding fun and healing thanks to this weeks jefferson award winner. Reporter the 6yearold sparkles with joy. Her mom says artwork keeps mayas mind off leukemia and chemotherapy. It shows her possibilities. She doesnt have to be just a cancer kid. She can be anything. Reporter purvi shah reaches hundreds of children with cancer and their siblings each year. Very cool. Reporter through her Kids Art Foundation in burlingame. The children aged 5 through 18 tell her its a bright spot in their lives. They see other kids happy and ablebodied with hair growing back and feeling better, that is the biggest hope we get. Beautiful reporter purvi organizes workshops in the Community Like at the Pacific Art League here in palo alto, plus regular sessions at lucille pack and benioff childrens hospital. More than 100 artists and High School Students volunteer. Reporter purvi came up with the idea for kids art in 2008 after her younger son amaey was diagnosed with cancer. Its just so, you know so sad and just so stressful. Reporter so the former Graphic Designer began leading art projects in doctors waiting rooms. One artist says purvi lets the kids be kids. She just brings good positive atmosphere. She just loves everyone. Reporter 9yearold amaey died six years ago. But purvi still feels his inspiration for kids art. I think he would say, keep it up. I like the shapes and the textures. Reporter so for providing art therapy for kids with cancer and their siblings, this weeks jefferson award in the bay area goes to purvi shah. Sharon chin, kpix 5.
