Supreme court as the justices blocked president obamas immigration plan today. The ruling was split evenly between the courts conservatives and liberals. And it leaves a Lower Court Ruling in place blocking the president s plan to spare up to 4 million Illegal Immigrants from deportation. It kills the plan for the rest of the president s time in office. I think it is heartbreaking for the millions of immigrants who made their lives here, who have raised family heres, who hope for the opportunity to work, pay taxes, serve in our military. And here in the bay area, activists had plenty to say about the decision today. Kpix 5s kiet do caught up with some of them in san jose. Kiet. Reporter it was a mix of anger and sadness in east san jose. Within a couple of hours of the Supreme Court ruling, some of the most powerful groups in the bay area had a press Conference Since 11 a. M. The Supreme Court decision was disappointing but they have vowed to fight on. [ chanting ] reporter there are about 100 people gathered at a Catholic Church in the same building within cesar chavez planned his protests years ago. Many of the families today would have qualified for it. 5million people who would have affected are low priority for Law Enforcement and the chances they will be deported are slim. Its little consolation to millions who would not be able to get work permits, boy a home or qualify for benefits. This person was near tears when he heard. He had been working in the fields since 1989. You want to pay your taxes. I have been paying it all the time. I been paying all the time taxes. I dont, you know im like like any other citizen. But the thing is i dont have the documentation. Thats the only thing that makes the difference. The work permit. The economy is built upon the backs of these people that are so desperately trying to, um, get get working, get their families together. Without this, it endangers families and further puts them at risk for deportation and economic disaster. Reporter that was one of the voices for Illegal Immigrants. He is going to tell his parish to continue on with the paperwork for dapa and to stay politically active t kiet do san jose. Today the Supreme Court also ruled in favor of affirmative action. The justices upheld the university of texas Admissions Program saying that it complied with earlier rulings allowing colleges to take race into account in order to pursue diversity. New at noon, House Democrats have ended their nearly 26 hour sitin calling for a vote on gun control. They say its necessary to keep the guns out of the hands of terrorists but as weijia jan reports there are no indications any demands were met. Lewis led the sitin as lawmakers delivered passionate speeches and held up signs with the names of the orlando gun shooting victims. Jeffries was a bystander caught in the shooting between rival gangs. She is being buried today. San Francisco Mayor ed lee is also speaking out after two deadly bicycle crashes. M. , police say a man driving a stolen white honda was trying to pass another car and smashed into a woman her 40s riding a bike. The car was found later on equestrian way, the driver still on the loose. These are illegal irresponsible outrageous acts that we have to condemn. Reporter as police were still at that scene, a second fatal crash in soma near 7th and Howard Streets around 8 30 p. M. Police say the driver ran a red light before hitting a woman on a bicycle. She was in her 20s. The driver was arrested for vehicle laugh manslaughter and felony hitandrun. Speed was involved in both incidents. So to the public, i ask that everyone please slow down. Reporter the city is also in the middle of whats called vision zero trying to prevent all bicycle and pedestrian fatalities. Thief reengineering streets and lights but people die every year on industry streets. We no longer accept the fact that people need to die in the streets of San Francisco as they are trying to get around town. Reporter the city is also looking into speed enforcements cameras. Right now California Law prohibits them. The transportation officials are lobbying state lawmakers about that. Anne makovec, kpix 5. In pleasanton a woman on a bike was hit and killed this morning at the intersection of valley avenue and sands boulevard. She died on the scene. The driver of the car involved stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police. The San Francisco Police Department has come under sharp criticism for its continued use of lethal force but now a critical decision that some say could save lives. The Police Commission unanimously approved a new policy banning several Police Practices including stopping the use of Police Chokeholds and no longer firing at moving vehicles unless they pose a direct threat. The changes come amid several highprofile officerinvolved shootings. The proposed policy that they put forward theres a lot of Common Ground that was reached between the poa and the officers citizens complaints as well as the San Francisco Bar Association and the other stakeholder groups. But there are areas that we have decided to agree to disagree. Now, the proposal will head to the unions for negotiation. The president of the Police Officers Association Says more compromise must be reached. Not guilty, thats the verdict for a Baltimore Police officer charged in the death of freddie gray. Cbs reporter Craig Boswell has more on the decision that some are calling disgusting. Reporter Baltimore Police officer Caesar Goodson was found not guilty of all charges including seconddegree murder in the death of freddie gray. Judge williams said he did not believe the 46yearold defendant intended to harm gray. Clearly, the state failed to present evidence sufficient to skins a judge. Reporter he was driving the Police Transport van on the day gray was arrested accused of not ensuring his passengers safety and not calling for medical assistance. The 25yearold died a week later. Goodson is the third Baltimore Police officer charged in the case. He was the only one charged with murder. This officer the most serious charges, but [ indiscernible ] so at the end of the day i feel im disgusted. Reporter prosecutors accused goodson of intentionally giving gray a rough ride causing his injuries. The defense said that gray caused his own injuries by falling inside the and that the suspect never appeared injured until the final stop when a medic was called. As for the other officers in this case, edwin narrow was found not guilty in may. William porters trial ended with a hung jury in december and will be retried. When a pastor in the east bay decided to give up preaching, it wasnt to retire. Instead, this weeks jefferson award winner is helping second graders catch up to and, in some cases, surpass their classmates. Allen martin introduces us to this weeks jefferson award recipient. Reporter randy roth couldnt believe that 60 of oakland third graders were they are kids at promise. Reporter so 15 years ago he gave up being a fulltime pastor and established Faith Network of the east bay. We do not provide religious services. But we provide services. Reporter those services now reach into 36 east bay schools, mostly in oakland. A key program is succeeding by reading, 300 volunteer tutors spending an hour a week working oneonone with second graders focusing on reading and comprehension. Its one thing to read a word on a page. Its another thing to carve a pumpkin so now what pulp really its another thing to carve a pumpkin so you know what pulp really means. Reporter carolyn piraino has worked with randy since the beginning. Many children hate reading. Its so hard for them. They just dont want to do it, even the simplest books. Tremendous progress. Reporter curtis crum retired as a teacher, only to become a tutor three years ago. Seems like light comes on and all of a sudden, you know, kids go through all these flash cards with no problem at all. Reporter students like carolina bedoy. When i first went to second grade, i was in level f. But then i went all the way to k and l. Reporter by the end of the school year, each student gets to write his own short story. Besides having their own stories that have been printed up into this booklet, when the students finish their tutoring program, they get to come pick out two other books that they get to take home and keep. For randy, theres satisfaction in seeing his Career Change pay off. 70 of our kids who go through the program for the entire year will advance by at least two and sometimes three grade levels by the end of the school year.
