So a lot of questions about these two students shot and stabbed. We dont know their identities, nor the identities of the attackers. This is an incredibly tough time for our community and i know novato will pull together. Reporter at about 5 30 last night, a teenager called 911 to report he had been shot and stabbed near the end of fairway drive. As he was rushed to the hospital, officers combed the open space nearby and found a second teenager shot dead. The only description of the suspects, three hispanic men. Neighbors say they saw a white sedan speed from the scene. A lot of people are providing us information. We are able to put these pieces together, which is painting a better complete portrait of what took place. Reporter officers are combing the trails for more evidence. A Spokesman Says he doesnt know the attackers motive but he will say theres no further threat to the community at this point. Reporter Novato High School remains closed today. The length that we know about with the students were right here at Novato High School, so we have some concerns about what might happen with that. We can expect more news on this case this afternoon according to the Sheriffs Department that might include information on arrests. Live in novato, anne makovec, kpix 5. New at noon, the chp revealing for the first time its made five arrests in the east bay shootings. Thats all they are saying. Kpix 5s da lin says the shootings prompted an emergency meeting this morning by fire mayors by five mayors whose cities have been impacted. Reporter five mayors are asking Governor Brown for money to stop freeway shootings on i 80. They signed it today. They want to get it to the desk today if possible. The mayors would like to install cameras at freeway on and offramps stretching from el cerrito to hercules. There have been close to 30 freeway shootings since late last year many of those on 80, some on 4. Now, there are existing cameras on parts of i 80. Some mayors believe the on and offramp cameras would capture license plates and help police track down the shooters. I would like to see this done as soon as possible. I firmly believe that the state has the ability to enhance their freeway cameras to get reporting. Thats the first step. We have to tell the public more importantly the gangsters that, hey, whats going to happen on the freeway is going to get recorded. Reporter Police Believe many of the recent shootings are targeted and gangrelated. But innocent people have been hurt in some of these shootings. A letter sent to parents by the principal says the stolen Campaign Signs negatively affected the campaigns of local City Council Candidates violated the trust of our community and negatively impacted the reputation of Santa Teresa High School. Reporter airport managers told congress this morning that lines at security checkpoints are long. And the problem is only getting worse. Passenger wait times are consistently 60 minutes or more. Airline passengers have reported wait times as high as 120 minutes with thousands of passengers missing their flights. Reporter Many Americans say they are planning to skip those long lines this weekend. A new poll shows more than 20 of people planning to fly before labor day have changed or canceled their plans because of concerns about long lines at airports. The problem stems from a frustrating mix of more people choosing to fly combined with fewer people to screen them at these checkpoints. For the first five months of this year, the tsa has screened 449 million travelers. Thats up 12 or 57 million passengers compared to last year. With 5800 fewer tsa screeners than 2011. Its going to be a great summer for sure. An environmental cleanup in the south bay can be traced back to one struggling fish. The man who saw that fish was inspired to restore a waterway that once had hundreds of salmon swimming in it. Allen martin introduces us to this weeks jefferson award winner. Reporter once a month , steve holmes pulls on his waders and his ball cap and heads to Los Gatos Creek in search of trash. What we had was pretty much a dead river. Reporter semiretired, the fishermanturned environmentalist was inspired three years ago when he discovered a chinook salmon in Los Gatos Creek struggling to make it upstream to spawn. Trying to go over a cement barrier unsuccessfully. It tugged at my heart. Reporter it inspired him to create the nonprofit south bay clean Creek Coalition because what he called a dead river turned out to be a manmade problem. We had probably eight major encampments along Los Gatos Creek. We had 225 people that were living in the close proximity to the waterway. Reporter and with them, trash, tons of it. Well need more bags. Reporter the coalition relies on volunteers like carol and george szymkiewicz. The fishing are coming back. The beavers are coming back. The whole ecocycle is coming alive again. Reporter yes, beavers. This night vision video shows one at work along the creek two years ago. The fruits of the work, you can see in the creek right here. Its nice clean, clear water going into the bay. Look at you, man, awesome. Reporter there are now more than 500 active volunteers working with steve, expanding from Los Gatos Creek to include cleanup of the Guadalupe River that runs through downtown san jose. And the trash collected has become a visual message. They make artwork from batteries, syringes, even the shopping carts that become fish. We have moved a waterway from a complete mess to something thats starting to look like its healing.
