Kpix 5s jackie ward is live at city hall with more. Reporter supervisor aaron peskin just wrapped up a press conference at city hall. The people behind me are still talking about it. Affordable housing is on the minds of nearly every bay area resident. And supervisor peskin proposes a 100 affordable alternative including a housing and Small Business preservation. Under the plan theres no demolition of existing housing or Small Businesses. He says this along with prop c will help the citys housing issue. Locally were trying to adopt an alternative that will use 240 underused sites for the development of 100 Affordable Housing. Reporter prop c is on San Franciscos june 7 ballot. It would be a measure to impose Affordable Housing requirements. A yes vote for prop c would support changing the citys charter to increase requirements for new Affordable Housing developments and a no vote would be the city charter as is. From San Francisco city hall, jackie ward, kpix 5. In 15 minutes, the protect oakland Renters Coalition will call on leaders to find solutions for soaring rent costs. Members plan to serve eviction notices to the mayor and city council for what they say is a failure to put protections on the june ballot. The group will be outside oakland city hall. In berkeley tonight Council Members will introduce a comprehensive plan to address the citys housing and homelessness crisis. A councilmember says enough talking, its time to act. One of the proposed initiatives includes tax and fee waivers for section 8 units. Capitelli is also asking for a report on the state of Homeless Services to understand exactly how resources are being allocated. Late this afternoon, californias highspeed Rail Authority is holding an open house in san jose. The authority will give an update on the san joseto merced portion of the project. The meeting starts at 5 00 at the berryessa community center. Its a bathroom bill thats divided the nation and in less than an hour, san jose will decide whether to ban essential travel to North Carolina in response to what some think are discriminatory laws. Kpix 5s keit do has been following the new developments. Reporter at last count there are enough votes to pass this travel ban and so in just a couple of hours, san jose will add its name to the list of governments that are pressuring North Carolina. San Jose City Council member raoul will vote for nonessential travel to North Carolina, conventions and mississippi for other events. Even though its not a lot of money the message it sends to North Carolina is invaluable. This is not about the money. This is about the statement that is being made. What youre doing is wrong. And they are going to see that. Reporter yesterday hundreds of protestors rallied at the North CarolinaState Capitol building with some arrested protesting house bill 2 that requires transgender people to use public bathrooms according to the gender on their birth certificate. Last week the department of justice says it violates Discrimination Laws and threatens to block billions in federal funding and president obama wrote a letter to North CarolinaPublic Schools urging them to allow students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice. I think that it is part of our obligation as a society to make sure that everybody is treated fairly and our children are all loved and that theyre protected and that their dignity is affirmed. In a developing story, ntsb is releasing new findings about a deadly train crash that happened last year in philadelphia. Investigators say the engineer of the amtrak train was distracted by another nearby train that had been hit by a rock. They say he might have lost track of where he was and sped up along a dangerous curve before the train derailed. 8 people were killed. The ntsb believes the crash could have been prevented. Unfortunately, because of that conscious decision that amtrak made not to install automatic train control northbound, 8 people died. Amtrak says they have taken full responsibility for the accident and will carefully review the ntsb findings and recommendations. The senate is set to vote this afternoon on three competing plans to battle the zika virus. This follows a request from president obama threemonth ago for money to combat the virus. New details on a deadly Southern California plane crash. Searchandrescue crews have recovered the pilots body from the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National forest.
