The goal is go to the museum and then we heard about the boat coming in so we thought we would see the biggest ship to come to america. Reporter the nearly quarter mile container ship nearly swallowed alcatraz and was definitely worth a selfieworthy moment. Its an american name under a london flag built by the french. Its the world. Reporter its journey began in china a few weeks ago. It was docked recently in los angeles before starting to oakland. Few ports in the United States can handle such a vessel. Oakland has invested millions in dredging and upgrading terminals to manage container ships this big, offering hope for more economic growth. Its really going to bring a lot of jobs to the bay area because you just have a lot more containers you know. So its going to be good for the port of oakland. Santa claras Youth Soccer League is fighting for their place to play. They say their fields are being handed over to the nfl for free and worry about the condition they will be returned in. The original plan was staging area for the halftime show but now it will be a media center for 6,000 visiting press. The concern is the plywood and stakes for a media center will destroy the pitch, potentially destroying the high quality grass and irrigation leaving 1500 players without a place to play. We want adequate fields for the club. We secured those fields. If any others are available we are open to trying to locate that. The city broke its own law. Essentially, the youth thats allowed for the park is for and i quote directly youth soccer only. Reporter attorney for santa claras youth league argued when the city built the field years ago it was under a conditional use permit and the Planning Commission only approved one use of the youth soccer park, youth soccer. So before they enter into a cold front with the nfl they have to hold a before they enter into a contract with the nfl they have who told a public hearing. That decision opened his eyes and opened the door to college for more than 100 kids here in the bay area. Allen martin reports. One of the things that i think you guys are doing is reporter as one of the 7 kids, Charles Schmuck always appreciated what he had growing up but in 2005 he began to feel especially grateful. I dont remember having a conversation with my dad and saying, look, is it okay if i go to santa clara, can you afford it . It was just youre going and well find the money. Reporter back in the classroom he saw kids didnt have money for college and even temperature they did very few and even if they did, very few finished. If you look at what happened six years later only one in five have graduated after six years. Reporter so in 2005, charles started the Peninsula College fund to help kids who would be the first in their families to go to college have a better chance of succeeding. Most of our kids have Household Incomes of under 50,000. Reporter working with nine high schools in east palo alto, east menlo park and redwood city, pcf provides a qualifying student with a 3,000 a year scholarship, summer job placement, internships and mentoring. That first year charles sent three kids off to college. Today, because of pcf, 74 students are in colleges all across the country and 51 are graduated. Read and translate. Reporter because of pcs, ed because of pcf, Tanya Garcia Pena went to college at cal and is now working on her masters and ph. D. I was considering going to Community College and San Francisco state or Something Like that and then transfer. I really wanted to go to berkeley and i think they made that final. Reporter stanford professor Tomas Jimenez is her mentor. The professor considers it his way of giving back. My father much like tanya came from mexico when he was young didnt speak english. Initially struggled through school but had amazing mentors in his life who helped him get through. Reporter for charles, he hopes the program will have unknown benefits. Well never know all the impact this program has had because its going to be the tanyas of the world who influence somebody who is not even in our program who in turn influences somebody else and somebody else.
