The dallas gunmen injured seven officers and two civilians and he wanted to exterminate whites. They are pairing up on patrols and giving us insight into what the Police Officers are facing day today, our author mark johnson. Lets talk about your book, apprehension and convention. Is basically the story of my decision to become a Law Enforcement officer at the age of 50 and what that career was like. A rookie cop and 50 and a social worker before that and well its wellrespected within the community on what made you decide you wanted to be a cop . United way motivated me for my first career, and i got burned out, frankly, after a few decades, raising money and allocating to agencies and i wanted it more handson, to see the difference that i could make. I cannot think of anything more handson than to be a cop. And you were a cop in alabama, and tell us what you saw out there. I was shocked, frankly. I thought i had some street smarts because a lot of the agencies that we funded were in the rougher neighborhoods and i would visit them, meet the staff and clients of the agency, but it is a different world when you going to so these neighborhoods wearing a badge. You get into peoples homes, and you are in the midst of violence and violent arguments. The level of savagery that i witnessed firsthand on a weekly basis, absolutely shocks me. And your book talks about not only what it is like behind the badge, but what you deal with on the streets as a Police Officer. And what it is like to do that at 50. Did the agent or get in the way . Well, yes. My fellow officers were half my age and younger than my own kids, so i had to earn my reputation with them. Id to prove to my fellow officers more so than a younger man would have. But i managed to do that after some goodnatured ribbing. And you were on the force for 12 years and became a detective, and a decorated officer, so i would think you would have proved yourself. I like to think so. It must have been difficult to take your family and wife that you were going to become a Police Officer, at whatever age, and basically putting your life on the line to be an officer. Thats right, and my wife was not pleased with that decision, to put it mildly. We argued about the cut in finances because cops do not make much money, and my cut in social status because cops are not wellliked, and also about the danger and i was 50 years old. And she told me i am not a natural lawyer and they would eat me alive. Natural warrior and they would eat me alive. Tell us what it is like as a former Police Officer to see what is happening. It is sickeningly sad first of all, and i must admit i feel some anger about it. But, we all know that that is the risk when we sign on. I think it is particularly tragic and unnecessary. It is hard to swallow and hard to fathom. March, is this debate about police brutality, not going away anytime soon and happening in the bay area, what is your take on this . How can we move forward and possibly resolve this . I think people need to understand what a cop things, and we dont go out there looking to use the gun or to beat people up. We respond to the circumstances that are confronting us. I was in an active shooter situation in a Mardi Gras Parade with a route around in a 15yearold kid shooting at a 16yearold kid in a crowd and i had to pull my gun and stop them and order him to drop the gun, and he did not immediately, for whatever reason. And the things going through my head were, if i shook this guy, i cannot miss but the bullet could come out his back and hit somebody else, and what will the media think, internal affairs and the district attorney. And more importantly, can i live with this if i have to shoot this kid, all that went through my head within two seconds in that goes through the mind of every cop facing this situation. We could cop talk about this all day, and mark johnson, thank you for joining us and your book, apprehension and convention. And tracking the weather. This comes as a new field poll on campaign 2016, california voters are facing a historic choice india center, and harris holds a strong lead over Loretto Sanchez in the fall contest, and the succession of barbara boxer. And we are asking the former San Francisco mayor willie brown and kpix about the matchup. It is very exciting, and weve had the top two in the primary and an incumbent and it was not a good contest. This is actually two democrats running for National Office and it will be an incredibly fun contest to watch. And you have put your support behind harris, but i understand you were talking to the Sanchez Campaign manager. I spoke with the Campaign Manager for harris, and they are aiming at 29 of the voters on the republican side of the aisle and they are of the opinion that if they can maximize that collection of people, and at the same time bring her ethnic heritage, the hispanic voters, they think they can be competitive. Some suggesting that the numbers are not ultimately working in that direction because i dont think that Carmela Harris has displayed how powerful she can really be. In this election, she got the highest number of votes even higher than hillary. Back do you think a combination of latino and republicans can work . It showed that she did not necessarily win the hispanic vote and harris dominated even that demographic, and she has a lot of work to do. What about republicans . That seems to be out of the picture in this election. They constituted about 42 of the vote. But it was all split up. But that group of people is where these two candidates will have to balance, and the question will be one of them only has to get 11 or 12 to become the u. S. Senator and the other has to get almost 30 in order to become the next u. S. Senator, and that is pretty tough. I dont think Carmela Harris will necessarily glad to the republicans, but relying on the democrats. You are wrong, Carmela Harris is going to go after everybody. That is true. She will be going after every vote, and one of her Campaign People said is like starting the second half of the championship Football Game with three touchdowns ahead.
