Salon products like hair straighteners and nail polish are made with hazards chemicals like formaldehyde that lead to cancer and other health concerns. Unlike retail products, labels are not required on professional products. The product counsel says the labels are more than adequate. Getting exposed to an estrogen like chemical during that period of time can have consequences for that fetus later going on to develop breast cancer. Clearly, she is talking about exposure for women who are pregnant there in that soundbite. If passed, the bill would apply to 53,000 beauty salons across the country. There are plenty of regulations intended to keep human food safe, but there are new concerns about pet food. We thought we were going to lose her. The vet blames penelopes kidney failure on her dog treat. They are among the thousands of pets with illnesses or deaths linked to pet food in recent years and in many cases, they dont know what in the food made them sick. The fda has received over 9000 pet food complaints since 2010. Lab tests commissioned by the clean label project are shedding light on what they say are shocking levels of contaminants lurking in pet food. I saw the lead levels that were 55 times higher than what was seen in the michigan plant drinking water. In the flint, michigan drinking water. Instead of nutrition, she says they focus only on contaminants which a lab says they have found in nearly every brand tested. Foods are branded and the reality is that most of the foods that are out there just have to comply with basic fda requirements and they have not been researched. She notes animals can be more tolerant than humans too many contaminants. You should always be concerned when you hear the food that you are feeding your pets are high in these values. This guidance following the flint, michigan water crisis said pets should not consume the water if it consumes more than 150 per they are making human grade claims, and it should make human grade standards. Though these substances can be naturally occurring, they may also be found in human foods and each brand had products with much better results. Exactly how much is too much lead, mercury, well, the fda has no set limits. In the absence of any federal let regulation federal regulation, we had to rely on something. If we cant compare human food to pet food, there needs to be some regulation. Va reports 15 pet food recalls so far this year, none related to the contaminants outlined in this report, any level of those substances must be safe for those animals. Some companies dont test for these contaminants because there are no set limits. They stand behind their products. The pet Food Industry notes that the raw data and statistical methods were not publicly released stating it is impossible to assess the credibility or significance of recent claims made, however, the industry admits it did not request that information. The clean label project is now calling for more disclosure and limits on these contaminants, something many pet parents would like to see. A look at your headlines as we make our way throughout the day, we may have some warming this weekend, we are going to remain cool along the coast, so we are not going to see significant warming, especially not for the first half of the day. Temperatures are in the low 70s in the valley, not hot by any means. In San Francisco, for carnival tomorrow morning which we will be covering live on our website, the temperatures will range between the coast which will have upper 50s and in lynn will reach into the low to mid 80s. Not hot by any means, we should see some sunshine inland the end of the day on memorial day. Your full forecast coming up in just a bit. We are learning more about the building under construction that collapsed yesterday. It doesnt construction workers were injured, and some of them fell 2 stories into wet cement. Investigators tell kpix5 the subcontractor involved in that project is under scrutiny. The scene dramatic, the injuries, minor, but the investigation could mean serious citations for the sub contractor. They want to preserve the site, they want to be able to see what happened. The agency that oversees work safety will try to figure out what caused the second floor to collapse as workers poured concrete sending up to 20 falling two stories into the wet mixture. They were only trapped up to their knees. Oakland firefighters said when they arrived, workers were already helping the victims using shovels and pieces of plywood. It was a very great rescue. Someone is supposed to always watch the site in case something goes wrong. He claims no one got a warning. The agency opened for inspections, and one of them resulting in a serious citations in 2015 for failing to protect workers. The subcontractor for the building has a long history of safety problems. They had inspected the company a total of 11 times in the past five years. Four of those incidents were accident related inspections, three of the 11 expections conducted resulted in violations for Workplace Safety hazards. The agency will investigate what happened in oakland. They are based in southern california, have an office here in the bay area. The company has been in business now for more than 25 years. A fire broke out along this complex along industrial drive. At least 18 Storage Units were damaged or destroyed. Because of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported. Today marks exactly 23 years since a 14yearold bay area girl was murdered inside of her home. Police are using advanced 3d technology to try and solve the case. On this day, she was stabbed inside of her home after she returned home from school. In the hours after her murder, investigators searched her neighborhood, but the killer was never found. The Alameda CountySheriffs Office just released a re creation of the neighborhood. The hope is to generate some new leads. It will show the streets from above, so you can take a look at what it looked like in 1994. We hope you might remember seeing a car in a specific area or jogging your memory of an individual. Our sadness will never end. The fbi is working with the Alameda CountySheriffs Office on the investigation. The pilot of the small plane was lucky to walk away with minor injuries after crashing onto a street. The plane came down yesterday afternoon just outside the buchanan airfield airport. The faa says the pilot was trying to land the plane apparently clipped a fence and street sign before hitting the ground and sliding. It came to rest at this intersection. It took off from here and was attempting to land and had some engine issues. At least one car at a nearby dealership was hit by flying debris. Other than the pilot though, no injuries are reported. Believe it or not, it is a hamster wheel chair. She has a condition with her back legs. I can actually take her out and show you, but her back legs dont rightly work right, so we are doing some rehabilitation with her, some physical therapy, and so she can use them a little bit, and we are helping her learn how to use them, but in the meantime, we are also giving her the option of the wheelchair. What is the longterm prognosis . How soon would you be able to tell if she will be able to walk without assistance . We are doing as much as we can. I dont know necessarily the timeline, but as she grows, she gets stronger, sweeter, and cuter. You can see her front legs are pretty strong, and she moved herself around. We are hoping that in timea will we are hoping that in time, she will be able to use them. She kind of on the delicate side . You know, she is really small for little kids, so it depends. Her foster home right now has kids that are a little bit older, so really a dog savvy child could be good with her. She would be good for somebody that is really careful for her, especially as a puppy. She seems like she is very calm and very loving. She is the sweetest little thing. [ laughter ] how did she come to you guys in the first place . You said she was only six week six weeks old. They called us and said we have a special needs puppy, and you take her in . And thats what we do. So, we just took our. We started with a little bit of bottlefeeding, but at her age, she got really excited about regular food, and so she is on regular food now. If somebody sees her this morning and falls in love with her, it sounds like she is not ready to adopt just yet. Right. She is a little young right now , but you can find is on our website. I dont want to live like that, like live in poverty or live in a situation where you always have to look on your back for any thing. It is really hard to go anywhere without someone saying you think you are too good, so you have to kind of reflect on yourself. Which is why he looks forward to the day when he becomes the first in his family to graduate from college. I think it will open my eyes to the world. I think that it will make me a better person. He has hit so many challenges and overcome them already that he already has that part settled. There is nothing that college can throw at him that i dont feel like he is prepared for mentally or academically. He is headed to San Diego State this fall.
