Next i sit down with the author of a book palo alto faced when teens committed suicide years ago. ,,,,,,, 10 teens committed suicide. A tragity. That got the feds involved. Santa clara county Health Officials found the county averages about 20 suicides per year of young people. Up to age 24. Since then palo alto has offered more counseling. And installed fencing around caltrain tracks. Some schools also start later now so kids can get more sleep. Joining us now to talk about those teen suicides. Author lee kravetz. And lee you have a new book coming out about those suicides. Can you tell us s the be joining us to talk about the teen suicides is the author of a new book called strange. The schools they attended were pressure cookers and they cracked. But your book takes a little bit of a different perspective. Explain to me. The idea is that Silicon Valley is really good at making things that catch. Great education, technology and social media. In 2009 Something Else caught that was never supposed to catch but did. That was it became the first of three basic suicide clusters. There are a lot of different reasons. To say suicide is contagious is a misnomer. Thought, behaviors and emotions are contagious and they are all around us. One thing i did was spent six years going around the country talking to people about how these things are contagious and what we can do to try to stop them. This community is very sensitive and rightly so to this issue. If there is the potential that the vigils that accompany these suicides, the media coverage, the mere discussion of what is going on can spread this somehow, what is the way to prevent it . That is a great question. It is a double edged sword. So not talking about it spreads a sigma. To talking about it spreads contagious. Talking about it and be open and honest. Talk about the causes. Talk about ways to prevent. But, in my mind, what the Research Really shows is talking about it in a realistic way h elps. You cant push it away. If you bury it, then the stigma becomes bigger than the continue they jen itself. They hired security guards to watch the train tracks for all of the hours the trains were in operation. Rate a policy hike that. Anything to do to stop these things is the right thing to do. You dont want to go overboard. There is the idea if you bring in the epa to look at certain contagions or people in hazmat, it leads people to believe there is something wrong. That everybody can catch what is going on. It is a relatively minor amount of people who catch these contagions. Educate people. Become interrupters so you understand when your friend is feeling low and feeling pressure you understand the signs and symptoms and you can stop them. Be aware of the emotions you have. Those things are spreading everywhere, as well. Look at the primes and cues in the environment. They are telling kids whether they know it or not to be the best that they can be. Some of the things really hurt. Let me ask you one last quick question. What has the reaction been from parents . If you told me i lost my son or daughter because they were infected like you might by from a disease, i might be offended. With suicide it always starts with a foundation of mental illness, which is like depression, anxiety, things of that nature. These contagions help us in education, help us innovate. You can spread happiness, resilience and hope. All these wonderful things, as well. Singling kids out with specific issues is not the point. The point is there are c ontagions everywhere. We need to understand how to use them to the best of our knowledge to save peoples lives and help innovate and make People Better at what they do. They are everywhere. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you for your work in h elping us better understand a very disturbing thing in this community. You are book is coming out in june. Reporter pintrest users saved two million pins to their boards last year with 1. 7 billion home decor pins overall. The social network where users share project ideas decided this would be the perfect project to launch the partnership with the arts and craft retail chain michaels. Pintrest is an idea pin board. The materials you have to go to another source for. We feel we are the perfect source. Reporter michaels make it kit is everything you need to create a pintrest project. Kate points to the popularity of kits in general. We are in a kit culture or kit mentality. Reporter surveys show a majority of millennials have tried and liked the premade meal kits. It is a mentally soothing thing to do to make things. It is no surprise people want to do that. They just dont want added stress of figuring out what they need in order create. Reporter the make it partnership will pay off for both brands bringing pintrest to life while helping michaels stay relevant allowing the big and mortar to offer new s olutions. In addition to satisfying a genuine consumer need their marketing is brilliant. They are limiting the quantity of the kits. Reporter they only released a thousand kits sold exclusively online. They plan to release a makeit kit monthly based on trending pins focused on home decor. Joining us is richard to discuss this trend and why we are becoming a kit culture. Diy is not new. These kits are popping up everywhere from the food kits and meal kits. You can buy a kit for your husband and boyfriend. There are tshirt the dyeing prints kits. You can print tshirts at home. Thats really hot. The diy thing is a huge trend in toys, art and crafts. People seem to want to use their minds more. They are soothing creative abilities to make things better. The food is perfect. You get the ingredients. You get to create. You dont have to do exactly what it says you can do Something Like it. I think a lot of times people want to be creative but they dont have to time to buy everything they need to do it. This cuts down on this. What does it do for your mind . The new twist is the old twist. There was something called a Maker Movement which is still very popular. The Maker Movement was a way for people to use their hands to tinker with electronics and woodworking and arts and all kinds of things. Thats been going on for a while now. It has lead to this idea of people wanting to use their m inds more. It is a very cool thing when you see the final product and you didnt just buy it off the shelf. It is something you added to it that you made and created. It is a more specialized 2015. Thats why michaels and pintrest chose this. Apparently it is really popular on pintrest. People are pinning ideas that are made. They are home decor ideas you buy in the store and you can make it for yourself to add a personal touch. Lets talk from a marketing perspective this partnership between pintrest and michaels. One is social media and one is tangible arts and crafts. What does this do for the brand . Pintrest is a pin board. Pin boards are very michaelsest. For pintrest this is a good way to branch out in middle American Mind set. For michaels this is about relevance. It is listening to people and what they want and what they need. It is getting michaels excited about delving into a new social media type. Michaels, i think for many people, it is where your mom and grandma shop. It is where the friends of you who are great diyers go to shop. A lot of people may not think to go to michaels for home decor. This brings them into the home decor game. Pintrest is online. It is not tangible. You dont touch it. You are looking at other p eoples ideas. It brings home the tangible f eel. Do you think this will help either or both Companies Bottom line . It will help both companies. Pintrest want more people pinning, excited and sharing. In order to do diy you have to touch and feel what you are b uying beforehand. You go into michaels and it is all there in the store. Which, for a lot of people who only shop online it is phenomenal and different. What does it do to Consumer Opinion on either or both of these brands . For pintrest it brings in the michaels crowd which is interested in pin boards. Maybe they are doing it at home off line. Now they are do it online. For michaels they are putting a thousand of those out. People will rush to the stores. It will be great for their bottom line. It is sort of a black friday fear of missing out. If you want to be in the i n crowd with your friends who are the expert crafters you better get in on it quickly. Michaels is only selling these online. They are not selling them in the store. It is not necessarily a ploy to get people in stores. When we were in the store they didnt have all of these items grouped together. You had to go aisle by aisle to gather them if you didnt buy the kit online tom you online. Do you think there is a benefit to that . I think michaels really w ants to get people excited about going back to the store and not just the older people but having younger people discover you can go to michaels if you need to and buy all kinds of other fabric and things that you can use for these projects. And replacement items for the kits. Thank you very much for joining us today and giving us perspective. Stay with us. Well be right back. ,,,,,,,,,, good morning, im devin fehely. And im julie watts.
