Lately there seems to be less fog and thats a threat to californias beloved redwoods. Reporter its a common sight in San Francisco, fog enveloped the golden gate bridge. Thick blankets of marine layer cover near stinson beach. But these days clear skies. Meteorologist micro peckner has been studying this for 30 years. We are seeing a major part of Climate Change mike peckner. Thousands come each year to see the giant redwoods but they are suffering and more could in years to come. They are very dependent on that fog that comes in. Reporter but on a day like this, visitors would more often than not have to aware rain jackets than dry. Its literally saturates the canopy of the trees then this moisture comes down like rainfall and literally soaks up the ground around the trees and if that rainfall doesnt hit the ground it could really stress out the trees and possibly over time kill them. Each redwood tree requires 500 gallons of water per day. Entire strands of redwoods are in danger. Different species of trees around them are dying. Coastal fog has steadily diminished for decades. This is only around a thousand years old, they grow slowly and on a different time scale than humans. But they are adapted to live in a very specific environment that gives them a lot of moisture so inevitably if the climate continues to be drier, there will be significant consequences for the redwoods.
