Just into the newsroom, crews are looking into two separate car fires in brentwood. They happened only minutes apart around 3 30 a. M. The first was on Hollow Brook Court and the second on highland way. For now theres no information about how they started. Today is National Mamas Bailout Day. Its an effort to let women in jail spend mothers day with their children even if they cant afford bail. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores is live in oakland with details. Reporter michelle, thats right. Advocates are using mothers day to highlight why they claim california badly needs bail reform. They gathered here at the Alameda County courthouse later today for a rally saying their mission is to reunite as many women in jail with their families as possible. Again, they are calling that National Mamas Bailout Day. More than a dozen local and National Groups will post bail for as many black women and possible who would otherwise spend mothers day in jail because they cant make bail. It is supporting californias bail reform act. If passed the legislation would eliminate the bail requirement for nonviolent crimes. Supporters of the bill say thousands of people remain in jail because they cant afford to post bail. 63 of those in county jails have not been convicted of a crime and are being held awaiting trial. So one of the groups involved is called Effie Justice group. They put out a video speaking to mothers with loved ones in jail. Raising children, going to school, parentteacher night, its just me. I feel really alone. [ crying ] reporter and there are many groups who oppose bail reform. They say its like a controversial new jersey plan where there have been reports of people committing crimes out on bail. So today, right here at the alameda courthouse, the public defender will join group in the rally and that event starts at 10 30 a. M. Live in oakland, Jessica Flores, kpix 5. Right now Antioch Police are searching for a man wanted in a deadly shooting. The Department Just released this sketch of the suspect. The shooting happened last month on west 8th street. The victim, david pearson, was taken to the hospital, where he died. If you recognize the suspect in that sketch, call police. New video just released by San Bernardino police showing the moments leading up to a deadly double school shooting. You can see the gunman Cedric Anderson walking into the front office where two administrators are working behind the desk. After signing in, he walks into his wifes classroom at North Park Elementary School and opens fire. His wife and an 8yearold student were killed. He then killed himself. North Park Elementary School has tightened security for visitors since that shooting. Now to politics. Today acting fbi director Andrew Mccabe testifies before the Senate Intelligence committee in place of james comey. The Development Comes as president Trumps Administration continues to defend its decision to fire james comey. He was not doing a good job. Reporter President Trump continues to defend his firing of james comey wednesday night. I think it would not be a bad thing for the American People if he did step down. Tweeting out this video of several democrats calling for the former fbi directors resignation in the past. The post came on the same day comey issued a farewell letter to his bureau writing in part frankly, he had been considering letting director comey go since the day he was elected. The white house has cited comeys handling of Hillary Clintons email scandal as reason for his termination. Democrats maintain its all a coverup, pointing to reports comey had recently asked Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein for more resources into the fbis probe examining possible collusion between trump and russia. He feels the dragnet tightening on the russia investigation so he fired comey. As democrats kept up calls for a special prosecutor, at least one Republican Utah representative Jason Chaifetz called on the Justice Department to expand the russia probe to include comeys dismissal. Lets go where the facts lead. The Senate Intelligence committee has now subpoenaed President Trumps ousted National Security adviser, michael flynn. Aside from acting fbi director Andrew Mccabe, National Intelligence director dan coats and cia director mike pompeo are set to testify today. Comey has been invited to testify next week. Officials began discussing the expansion of their balancing following the laptop bombing on a somali airliner last year. Airlines are working with the department of Homeland Security now to discuss the issue. Right now, the ban applies to people traveling from 10 airports in eight countries in the middle east and north africa. The expansion would apply to passengers leaving europe and the uk on flights bound for the u. S. The Homeland Security secretary will be on capitol hill today to speak with lawmakers. The dhs spokesman tweeted this morning, no final decisions made on expanding the restriction on large Electronic Devices in aircraft cabins. He says they are still analyzing the threat. Reporter kenny, its the 23rd annual bike to work day and the bay area is participating in it, of course. 100,000 riders are expected to get on their bikes and head to work today. That number has grown over the years. And theres one guy in particular who has been doing this for 30 years, dr. Paul carpenter. He is the Department Chair of kinesiology at cal state east bay. For the last 30 years, every day, he has been riding his bike to work. He says he rarely takes the shortest most direct route. He averages 50 miles a day. So while your distance most likely wont be that high first thing in the morning, paul is encouraging people to enjoy the views today. Cycling i got to see more, go different places further afield and i started in l. A. So whats not to like about riding in los angeles . [ laughter ] reporter well, fortunately, in the bay area, its a little less smoggy than l. A. Bike to work organizers say more than one Million People in the bay area live within five miles of their workplaces. Thats what they consider an ideal distance for bicycling. According to the 2013 American Community survey, only 62,000 residents use their bikes as a primary way to get to work so all nine counties in the bay area are participating in todays event. And across the peninsula across the east bay and here in San Francisco, they will have what theyre calling energizing stations. They will have free snacks and drinks and other goodies for bicyclists who are heading to work today. They will have bike doctors on hand where you can get complementary bike checks. We continue to see brake lights out of hayward across the san mateo bridge into foster city. But the real problem along southbound 680, we had an earlier accident. Its not blocking any lanes but emergency crews remain on the scene and they are waiting for a tow truck and this is southbound 680 at highway 84. Traffic backing up towards 580 at this point. Then your drive times, just under a 30minute ride as you make your way through that stretch. Were also tracking an accident northbound 101 right at 680. Thats blocking a connector ramp keeping the ride slow through the south bay. Good through oakland. Live look 880, this is right near the coliseum and you can see those taillight making their way northbound from 238 on out towards the maze there. No delays. Looking good along 580 approaching 680. Bay bridge toll plaza completely different story. We are in the red 35minute ride from the maze into downtown San Francisco. Hats a check of your traffic; over to you. Were starting out with the sunup at 6 03. I defy you to find it though on this mostly cloudy start to your thursday morning. But theres the bay, the embarcadero, and the numbers. 55 at concord. Low 50s for the most part. By this afternoon, we still stay in the mid50s at the shoreline and just a low to mid60s around much of the rest of the bay area. And the latest low pressure very deep cold low pressure which is sending the jet stream fairly far south. This is like this is like a winterspring configuration for the low. We just dont have any moisture with it so well get some clouds no rain maybe a little drizzle in the mortgage bay but that would be about it. Futurecast shows us what happens next. We get clouds around the bay area for this morning. And then they dissipate by tomorrow morning with increasing sunshine temperatures not increasing that much. Friday into saturday, more clear skies. So in general the sun will be increasing this weekend. But then that low pressure approaches so that by next week, we could pick up a few showers by tuesday afternoon. Wouldnt be much. Russian state media reports that President Trump will meet with russian president Vladimir Putin in july as part of the g20 summit. The Trump Administration hasnt confirmed it yet. But it comes on the heels of mr. Trumps firing of fbi director james comey. They were investigating the Trump Campaign with possible connection with russia. The Deputy White House press secretary says the firing had nothing to do with the russian investigation. I dont believe that that is sufficient rationale for removing the director of the fbi. We encourage them to complete this investigation so we can put it behind us. Theres no evidence of collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. The acting fbi director says that the investigation will continue. House democrats are pushing for an independent panel to take over. That would require a senate vote. Minority leader nancy pelosi is urging gop leaders meanwhile to bring the legislation to the floor next week. In a tweet, she says education secretary betsy devos gave the keynote address at a graduation at a black university and her appearance was interrupted by protestors. Im honored to become a wildcat. In the wake of a string of freeway shootings, today a special meeting is being held to decide where to install cameras. The east Contra Costa County district attorneys office, fbi state street task force and local Law Enforcement are taking part. This comes as the state pledges the funds needed to install cameras on two highways between richmond and antioch. There have been dozens of shootings along that stretch over the past few years along with gangrelated gunfire on 580, 880 and highway 4. Theres a push to make changes to the bail system in california and now supporters want to make sure women in jail get to spend mothers day with their children. In a letter to the state senate, hart says, quote, Public Safety is not enhanced when local Law Enforcement officers enforce immigration laws or act in a man their causes suspicion within the Diverse Communities they serve. Hart is now the first sheriff to endorse the bill which would prohibit state and local Law Enforcement agencies from using resources for immigration enforcements. This morning at the state capital, governor jerry brown will reveal his revised state budget proposal. This comes after januarys budget release found the state with a 1. 6 billion deficit. Governor brown will hold a News Conference at 10 a. M. Detailing his revenue plan. It will launch a fiveweek sprint to the finish line for state lawmakers, who face a june 15 deadline to pass a budget. Later today, the uc regents are holding a special closed door meeting to discuss the findings of a state audit. Just a few weeks ago, we found out the uc president and hid 175 million from the public in a secret fund. This is around the same time the university increased tuition. We are told the university plans to hire a consultant to study the audit. Happening today, the 23rd annual bike to work day. Thousands will be trading in their car seats for helmets. And they are offering incentives for people who ride their bikes to work today. Theres one man in particular, though, who does this every, single day. He has been doing it for 30 years. He says after being in a minor motorcycle accident in the 80s, he figured he would give his bike a try and has kept going from there. Be on the bike, maybe in a car you get to take in things you get to see a lot more on a bike so i think its easier to appreciate the fact that the east bay is beautiful and theres so much variety here. Snapchat parent snap is finding out that life as a publicly traded company is not so easy. The company delivered its first Earnings Report since its ipo and it really underwhelmed wall street. The company lost 2. 2 billion half of that was an ipo award to its ceo about 1 billion. But even more important to investors, is that the companys user growth really isnt that big. Only 8 million new users in the quarter to 166 million. Its yearoveryear growth is slowest in over two years. For wall street thats a big worry as snap goes against much Bigger Companies out there like facebook and instagram and snap shares are taking a 20 dive in the early going. Couple of key economic reports out. Labor Department Says initial jobless claims fell by 2,000 to 236,000. Thats the lowest level since 1988. Labor also reporting that wholesale side inflation in april posted its biggest year overyear gain in five years. Thats going to weigh on the Federal Reserve at its june meeting and is lifting the odds that well see another rate hike at that time. Stock market opening a little bit lower this morning. Heading to the big board you have the dow now lower by over 65 points. The nasdaq is down 26. S p down 10. Its been a slow, stop, go kind of morning and we continue to track delays on all of our bay area majors. The snow melt causing some minor flooding in yosemite. You can see the merced river briefly overflowed its banks. And its expected to reach flood stage for a second straight day. All the flooding is creating quite the show for tourists there. In fact, some areas that had been dry for several years are now seeing temporary waterfalls. Park Officials Say the falls should be active for another month. Lets send it over to Brian Hackney for a check of the forecast. They have flood warnings and watches out there that are going to be in effect for a while as we get all that snow pouring into the rivers and for us, we have all the clouds around the bay area and the numbers beginning on this thursday morning this morning, low to mid50s. This afternoon mid60s inland and low 60s around the bay. A little bit of sun will be coming out later but today been the cloudiest coolest day of the week as that low pressure continues to sit and spin in the gulf of alaska and then you get that 49degree ocean temperature. Pretty good sea breeze and the result, its winter in spring. Futurecast shows that tomorrow morning well have a few low clouds, as well. But now this is friday, the futurecast look what happens. We pop the low clouds, get more sunshine tomorrow. Yay that will hold true right into saturday. Heres what were expecting. Partly cloudy and cool, a little more sun for tomorrow and for friday, and then things change sufficiently so that there could be a few sprinkles coming in next week. If you head to the airport and out of the bay area, it will be partly cloudy at sfo. So the weather shouldnt slow you down. Temperatures will be in the mid60s. And then well look at partly cloudy skies in chicago, a little bit of rain in seattle and in los angeles, southland looks nice. Temperature 71 degrees. High temperature forecast, slow down i cant get that song out of my mind, either. Now that jaclyn mentioned it. Who can name the artist . You guys dont know . Jaclyn . Its all about 8 degrees below average. And heres the forecast for the south bay today. Mid to upper 60s. Well have some sunshine in the south bay. Mid60s this afternoon. Brentwood warmest at 70. Up in the north bay, upper 50s, low 60s. More clouds. Not so much sun. Same will hold true for ukiah and lakeport and clearlake 64 degrees there and 61 at cloverdale. In the extended forecast, we are going to be looking for numbers to be mostly in the mid60s today in the warmest locations, and friday and saturday well get increasing sunshine and then by tuesday a sprinkle or two wouldnt be a surprise. Wednesday will begin to warm up slightly. Between now and then, unusually cool weather right through the weekend and into early next week. Thats weather. Now lets get the latest. Time now 6 51. They are using mothers day as a way to highlight why they believe california needs bail reform. They have a name for this. Its called the National Mamas Bail out day and they say thousands of mothers and people remain incarcerated in jail because they simply cant afford to pay bail. Thats why they also want california lawmakers to pass a bail reform bill to eliminate the bail requirement for nonviolent offenders. Money bail is a problem because it targets poor people. It targets people of color. It puts us in a position where we cannot fight our cases. Reporter now, california data shows about 63 of those people in county jails are awaiting trial and have yet to be convicted. The Alameda County public defender will be joining these groups here at the Alameda County courthouse for that rally for incarcerated mothers. The event starts here at 10 30 a. M. The Associated Press is citing sources that say the white house is planning to launch a commission to investigate voter fraud and suppression. Hundreds of drivers who were fined for running red lights in fremont are getting refunds. They were given tickets and now nearly 600 drivers will get about 150 back which is the citys portion of the revenue. We have overcast skies from San Francisco all the way down to jaclyns hometown of camarillo. Whoo its just overcast. The numbers are in the 50s in the bay area to start things out with. 56 at oakland and 54 at livermore. More for livermore and not more in terms of temperatures though as we have a chilly ream breeze today as that low unusually far south allowing cold air to pool into the bay area. And then by tuesday, that low sinks far enough south and theres enough moisture so again on tuesday, we could pick up a few showers. In the meantime, todays going to be cloudy. A few sprinkles possible in the north bay. It will be sunnier but still chilly for friday and saturday. A chance of showers comes in on tuesday. Its going to be cool for the next week. And probably right into next week. High temperature forecast 60 into santa rosa. 66 at napa and 66 degrees at livermore. For San Francisco, a bleak 58 unless you like this kind of weather then you will love today. 68 in san jose. The extended forecast, well have a mostly cloudy day. Friday we have some sunshine saturday and sunday. Showers tuesday and wednesday we warm up however slightly. You say the word cold and i get goosebumps.
