Lets start with the Traffic Alert we have been dealing with for a few days now. This is in Scotts Valley area. Highway 17 down to one lane in both directions. Traffic is moving. There are workers and cones to look for out that way. That should be finishing up by the end of the weekend. Heres the bay bridge toll plaza heading into San Francisco. Looking good. There is a lot of storm damage across the bay area. We saw rain flooding and mudslides. The storm has knocked out power, damaged homes and even crush cars. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers talked to one homeowner who says he is lucky to be alive. Reporter Gordon Wozniak was just finishing dinner when the power went out. The house went black. Reporter he stepped outside his berkeley home and saw it. There was a big tree in front of our house just filling the street basically and we couldnt even see our car. Our car is buried under the tree branches. Reporter his car and tree others fully or partially crutched by the 100foot tree after rain left the soil here soaked. This just a small piece of the destruction around the east bay after days of stormy weather. In oakland, a boulder the size of a car came crashing down on grizzly peak road briefly blocking both lanes. In martinez, floodwaters in the streets downtown left some cars stranded. A massive mudslide in orinda forced paul out of his home. I thought it was thunder at first but it was a lot louder. Reporter the city red tagged the house on van tassle lane after mud came from a hillside into the home. It came into the back office and bathroom and buckled the floor that bedroom. Reporter not far away on miner road in orinda crews are working to shore up a month old sinkhole more than 20 feet deep. City Officials Say federal funding is on the way but miner road will be closed for weeks. Were also waiting for a break in the weather and hope to begin work on the project within the next few days. Christin ayers, kpix 5. Becker public works plans berkeley public works plans to clean up this morning. A mudslide cleanup is on hold on route 17 after a worker died on the job. Jessica flores reports. Reporter the side of the dangerous mudslide on highway 17 spiraled into a scene of tragedy. Devastated workers fell to their knees after two of their own were pinned underneath a dump truck. A lot of chp crews out here. Reporter kpix 5 reporter med was live on the air when it happened. And a woman driving by saw the truck crush one of the workers. A woman driving on highway 17 started honking and screaming and yelling and she stay with us wouldnt stop. Unfortunately, she was trying to get the attention of a chp officer. Reporter chp says the driver was backing up hauling away mounds of mud from the landslide in the Santa Cruz Mountains when he ran over the two men. Both victims working for granite rock eye contractor with caltrans. The company tweeted this picture. The worker is 54yearold bobby gill with the company for 15 years. The second man identified as 33 yearold Steven Whitmeyer survived after medics helped. Conscious, talking, transported over the hill to valley med. Reporter now caltrans says it wont resume the mudslide cleanup until cal osha investigates. Osha has to make sure all the Safety Measures are in place and then caltrans can continue so its not going to be monday but hopefully well have an updated time frame once caltrain knows whats going on. Reporter a routine day trying to make the road safe again turning into a nightmare for the workers on the ground. They are trying to make it easier and then Something Like this happens. Its very heartbreaking. They were wearing safety gear at the time of the accident. It reminds all drivers slow down in the cone zone. This car was stuck in floodwaters in monte rio. Drivers ran into this flooding. The car got stuck a coworker hooked a chain to it though and pulled it right out. Highway 37 in novato. The water is still rising on the road. You can see the flood there is. This is the worst flooding they have seen since this all started and it could be closed until late next week. In marin a sandbag isnt going anywhere as locals still feel the sting of recent storms. Kpix 5s joe vazquez on how residents are coping with School Closures and plenty of damage. Reporter the heavy rain has stopped. The flood threat is gone but check this out. We are still seeing piles and piles of sandbags in front of storefront after storefront here in downtown san anselmo. Truth is, folks here are exhausted with all these waves of wet weather. Panoramic highway on the way to muir beach is closed because a big part of it is missing. Theres high water near the high school in mill valley. A couple of miles away ladies and gentlemen tree crashed on a garage. I came home from work and San Francisco symphony and saw all the pg e trucks and thought ohoh. Reporter but the oh oh, wasnt as bad in the past storms or this week. San anselmo downtown was boarded up and sandbagged but to the relief many the Corte Madera Creek stayed within its banks. The Russian River in guerneville overflowed but not by much. The water got in a few garages but most of the home are raised. It wasnt a record storm but some schools closed. But that doesnt mean every student stayed dry. Its fun. I have lost a fence. Moving to the marin county commute on highway 37 it is still closed in both directions and chp is diverting traffic off westbound at atherton avenue and that will take you onto 101 and novato boulevard both offramps are closed and this is all due to very heavy flooding in the area. The worst flooding its had since the storm season started. And a fog advisory across the span of the golden gate bridge. If you can see it, 580 from san rafael to the golden gate toll plaza will take you about 15 minutes. Across the span of the bay bridge heres a live look at the toll plaza. Those metering lights not on until 5 30 so no delay. From carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze about 20 minutes. Traveling about 3,000 Miles Per Hour. You have to be at the right place at the right time to witness the totality. Most of the hotels in the valley are sold out. We finished booking up at the beginning of december. Reporter eclipse watchers book this room 200 a night twice the current rate but we found other hotels like this in corvallis charging 800 a night. So what do you do if you are looking for lodging . Reporter consider hotels outside the path of totality north in portland or south in eugene where you can still view a partial eclipse. And more campgrounds will be open. But reservations are going fast. And so it admission to three dozen viewing parties including the morning long event at the museum for thousands owe oregon state fairgrounds in salem.
