Three fires over the last 24 hours with destruction from the north bay to santa cruz. It began in novato where investigators say that a 14 yearold boy play with matches accidentally started a fire. The flames spread to a power line that exploded and erupted behind homes on oliva drive. This is the second fire in two days lettering hopes like this. Threatening homes like this. It burned about 6 acres. They got it under control but are still on the scene keeping an eye on any hot spots. Farther north in petaluma, a grass fire is spelling Major Repairs for homeowners after flames ripped through multiple houses in matter of minutes 3 15 yesterday. Thick clouds of smoke over homes on stewart drive. A cat died in the fire. Four homes were destroyed, 10 others damaged before it was put out. Hundreds of buildings are in the path of a Massive Wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It nearly doubled in size last night and is burning more than 2200 acres. Andria borba has the story. Reporter im standing on the eastern edge of loma fire off mount umunum road. The flames are growing without one key element typically seen in wildfires, wind. Flame and fuel in the santa cruz is unmistakable. The loma fire is sending wildlife running and out matching hoses cal fire is deploying against it. It looks better than a few hours ago but i dont like it, i dont. Reporter burning in terrain that hasnt burn in decades. Dozer line and chainsaws are the best bets for physically stopping the advancing flames. Only upside of the loma fire, these knob cone pines which dont go to seed until scorched. For those fighting the fire, the fact that this fire has doubled in size in two days goes against every fact about fire behavior they have ever learn. Typically, we see some wind thats influencing fire behavior. But so far, we have seen 2200 acres almost with the complete absence of wind so its a little surprising. Reporter but its also the new normal in the Santa Cruz Mountains and around the state following years of drought. Over the last couple of years, its the fire behavior that were expecting given the drought. Reporter the marine layer at the edge of the monterey bay will bring cooler temperatures. Im burning you down, but not you. It was amazing. Then when i flew into the bay area to the right we could see the soberanes fire burning out of control. You would see the planes leaping flames leaping. I was like a tour guide on the plane. Over here to your right is the soberanes. Over here is the loma fire. Theres our marine layer. Theres mount diablo. You explained this to all the passengers . I did. Does it surprise you . [ laughter ] no. But it is a different perspective. It really is when youre airborne and you can see how much territory right now the soberanes has burned. One thing the firefighters have been fighting against is the hot, dry weather. We have not had that robust sea breeze and that can change now that were seeing the layers and layers of low clouds stack up next to the coast. San jose police are asking for your help identifying a man accused of breaking into a home and taking off with a jewelry box. Later he rushes from the rear sliding door holding what looks like a jewelry box. San jose police are also looking for the suspect who reportedly stabbed a man to death. This person found out in the worst way possible when her brother augustine and another man were shot in front of the cameras in august. He loved his family.
