A bay area man is dead after jumping into a Swimming Pool to rescue his daughter in palm springs. As mark kelly reports, the cause of death was electrocution reporter slipping, drowning all common fears around a pool. But electrocution, that one is unusual. Investigators believe thats what killed bay area tech executive jim tramel and sent one of his daughters to the hospital. Very unusual that we would have Something Like this happen. You always hear about maybe an accident where a child near drowns or Something Like that. Reporter the burlingame family was spending easter at their Vacation Home in palm springs. Police say during an afternoon swim, jim noticed his 9year old daughter was turning blue. Investigators now believe the child was likely experiencing an electric shock from an old faulty light in the Swimming Pool and when jim dove in to save his daughter, he jumped into that fatal electrical current. Some of these homes are 25, 30 years old orr longer older and they can deteriorate. It needs to be looked at. Reporter police havent said when the tramels pool had its last inspection but 16 years working with pools steven little warns all pool owners to get regular checkups. Lights are required to be grounded and bonded by National Electrical code and should be inspected at least twice a year. Reporter jims daughter is in Critical Condition and jim left a lasting memory that he tried to protect them until the very end. Mark kelly, kpix 5. There were five other people in the pool but their injuries were less severe because they are farther away from broken lights. Bay area deputy seen beating suspect on surveillance cameras are accused of snapping a trophy picture after the violence. Last november deputies hit a man with their batons after he let them from Castro Valley into San Francisco on a high speed chase. Now the suspect is accusing them of taking a trophy photo after beating him up also accused of bribing to homeless witnesses with the suspects golden necklace. Policies dont include excessive beating or taking jewelry. They dont include bribing witnesses. It was wrong to flee the scene but what was more wrong was deputies violating their duty and using deadly force when there was absolutely no justification. Petrov, who is the victim, his attorney has filed a civil suit. Sheriff ahern has announced three initiatives involving body cameras policy and the use of force training. A hazmat team went to richmond after people complained about a sulfur odor from the chevron oil refinery. Chevron says it was flaring to relieve pressure during the refining process. Neighbors noticed a rotten egg smell which later subsided. The county crew checked the air at 8 30 and it was safe. In a statement, chevron says although the sight of the flare may cause concern but its an important part of keeping the refinery running safely. Four small quakes in san jose last night. Relatives of those kills when a berkeley balcony collapsed just got a shock from the d. A. s office. The Alameda CountyDistrict Attorney decided not to press charges in the case. Six students died and seven others were hurt when the balcony broke during a party last june. The d. A. Says it happened because water was trapped during the construction of the balcony and that led to dry rot. The victims were 5 irish students and a student from roanoke part. The victims said, there is a deep desire for this case to act as a lesson for other builders and avoid a tragedy like this from happening again. The state department and pentagon are warning the families of american diplomats based in Southern Turkey to leave that area. A man who hijacked a passenger plane departing egypt says he did it to give his ex wife a love letter. Crew members and travelers were seen arriving safely at the Cairo International airport in egypt. They were all held hostage on egyptair flight 181 which took off from alexandria. Hijacker Seifedeen Mustafa was wearing what seemed to be an explosive belt when he demanded that the plane be diverted to cyprus. It stemmed from a fall incident in San Francisco includes stealing from a suspect bribing witnesses and coverup. Anne makovec is in our newsroom with more on a case thats led to three deputies being removed from active duty reporter the victim accusing deputies now of taking a photo of him as he lay bleeding in the street and we found out that a sheriffs investigator rejected the deputies first reports of that incident because they didnt match what was on Surveillance Video. Heres some of that video taken last november showing two Alameda County deputies hitting a man with batons after he led them on a highspeed chase from Castro Valley to San Francisco. Now that suspect accuses them of taking a, quote, trophy photo after they beat him.
