A fire destroyed a house in concord and its still not clear if anybody was inside. It was on north 3rd street at 2 30 a. M. Check the flames. Downed electrical wires made it difficult for them to get close to the house. So for the most part those let it burn. Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution because of the live wires on the ground. The home is a total loss and crews are now searching for anybody who may have been inside. A bay area grandmother is in jail this morning accused of killing her grandson. Investigators say 51yearold dawn hughes drowned the child in a bathtub intentionally. Police were called to the home intentionally yesterday. They tried to resuscitate the 4 yearold but couldnt. As officers investigated the situation it became suspicious to them regarding how the boy had drowned in the bathtub as well as statements made by people at the scene. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Two other children in the home were unharmed. San jose police are investigating a stabbing that wounded a man and woman on the citys east side. It happened around 6 p. M. Yesterday at a carls junior restaurant and south white road. Investigators say the two victims were attacked by several men. No descriptions and no word of any arrests. The victims were critically injured. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. A pregnant 900pound seal is back in the wild this morning after a twoday standoff in sonoma county. Rescuers had to rent a flatbed truck to transport that massive animal yesterday. They finally made the rescue along highway 37 near 121. Andria borba reports. Reporter the elephant seal put on a show but its finally back where she belongs, in this case with other expectant mothers. So this is an area thats really protected. Theres a large colony of elephant seals. Theres moms and pups and large males and small animals so its everything she would need in this area to have and raise her pups. Reporter because its pupping season and so as not to disturb the outdoor nursery, it was lights off for the return effort at chimney rock. Staffers from the Marine Mammal center tried to corral the 900 pound mamatobe for hours today with kayaks, but eventually had to tranquilize her to get her back home. After an ultrasound, vets realized why she may have been ended up a peninsula way from where she should have been. She got sidetracked and was looking for a place to have her baby so pulled in further and got mor off track. Reporter she caused a commotion and at one point was trying to get on the highway before taking a nap in the mud just off the road. They are stubborn. They pick a direction and go that way. After two months of trial, the defense rested its case yesterday. The judge instructed jurors that they could get the case by monday or tuesday. Prosecutors called more than 40 witnesses over the course of that trial. The 55yearold is accused of racketeering, conspiracy and murder. A confrontation between a man and Palo Alto Police lasted only 19 seconds before officers opened fire. Kpix 5s mark kelly has more on the unusual circumstances that led to the deadly christmas night shooting. It was a very fast event. Reporter lieutenant zack peron says the suspect, 31year old william raff, made a 911 call that someone snow and ice this palo alto treatment home was, quote, really violent. But police say when they showed up, the only violent person was raff. The suspect came out of the shadows so the suspect was not in the house. The suspect was in the front yard or somewhere in that area in the dark. Reporter and Police Say Suspect raff was waiting outside the treatment home to jump police wielding a 9 long metal knife. According to police, dashcam video shows the suspect lunging at officers three times and officers telling the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect charged at them in a full sprint once and that was when he was shot by two officers and one officer deployed his taser. Reporter police are reluctant to confirm reports that the suspects weapon was a butter knife. It is what i would consider to be a dinner knife or a table knife. But the fact of the matter is, is that its a 9 long piece of metal. Reporter the officers one with five years experience, the second a year and a half, are now on paid administrative leave. And palo alto pd wont be releasing the dashcam video, which they say captured the incident in its entirety. They were forced to do what they had to do based on the suspects actions. The Santa Clara County District Attorneys Office is investigating the shooting along with Palo Alto Police. Today state water managers will survey the Sierra Snowpack for the first time this winter. The Sierra Snowpack of course is crucial for californias water supply. And there has been decent snowfall there recently. The monthly surveys are conducted at the phillips station off 50 near sierra the tahoe. Water experts estimate the snowpack is about 120 of normal for this time of the year. Eastbound 80 right at university we are dealing with an accident now involving up to five vehicles. One vehicle overturned. It is blocking all but one lane as you work your way through there. San Francisco Police say the man thought the two suspects were up to no good and you can see in this Surveillance Video, he stands up and a fight breaks out. They even tried to pull him off of the bus. The man fought the two men off but had to go to the hospital with a head injury. If you do commit any type of battery in San Francisco, youre going to be caught on camera. Youre going to be seen. It will be played on video. And the viewers will be able to see who these criminals are that are committing these heinous crimes. Police released this video from november 3. That attack happened around 2 a. M. Near sixth and mission. The suspects still on the loose. A man and woman are suspected of shoplifting a lot of expensive sunglasses in fremont. Heres Surveillance Video from a couple of weeks ago. A store manager says the suspect stayed in the store for about 15 minutes and left, and then 10 pairs of glasses were gone. They were worth 400 each. A manager checked the Surveillance Video. They were being really nice to all the customers, saying hi and everything, acting very nice. You know. And then they just came in, um, looked around while my employees they said they were just they took the glasses and pocketed them. Some homes in san joses evergreen area were evacuated after a man brought some old blasting caps and black powder to a fire station. It happened yesterday at the station near the villages retirement community. The Fire Department says the man who brought the potentially explosive material thought he was doing the right thing. They were cleaning out an old storage unit found the product and like, it didnt look safe and brought it, i think appropriately, to the fire station. We ask people in the future to not transport that material, to basically call us to the scene that we could evaluate it there. The bomb squad and hazmat teams were there for about an hour before giving the all clear to the fire station and surrounding homes. The federal government is warning hundreds of homes in illinois, missouri could be threatened by a rare winter flood. Some parts of the states are already flooded forcing evacuations and the partial closure of major highways. Experts are monitoring 19 levees on the Rising Mississippi River and its tributaries. Firefighters are still trying to figure out if anybody was inside that house. Fire broke out on north 3rd street around 2 30 a. M. Downed electrical wires made it difficult for firefighters to get close to the home so for the most part they had to let that house burn.
