Thousands gathered at a candlelight vigil last night to remember the victims killed in San Bernardino. The focus turns to the motors of Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik to execute mass murder. We are in so much shock. Reporter sarah and her husband were related to the suspects who died in a shootout with police. In an exclusive interview with cbs this morning, they expressed shock and disbelief. I can never imagine my brother or my sisterinlaw doing Something Like this because they were happily married, they had a beautiful 6 monthold daughter. Reporter investigators say farook traveled to saudi arabia and pakistan last year and returned with malik who came to the u. S. On a fiancee visa. While the couple was not on any terror watch list, Law Enforcement sources tell cbs news farook had been in contact with people both in the u. S. And overseas with possible ties to terrorism. What it adds up to me was this was a guy who probably radicalized by either isis or al qaeda. Reporter officials recovered thousands of bullets and more than a dozen pipe bombs inside the couples home. Cbs news has learned those devices remained from Christmas Tree lights and radio controlled toys. Clearly they were equipped and could have continued to do another attack. We intercepted them before that happened. Reporter authorities are now searching for the person they say legally bought two militarystyle rifles used in the massacre. Officials wont say who that person, that man, is. And it is unclear at this point if that person perhaps bought those weapons for these shooters or if they were stolen and then used in these killings. Back to you. Chris, lets talk about that. Do they have any further leads on who may have bought those rifles and are those rifles legal under california gun laws . Reporter it would seem from whats being indicated is they know who this person is. Its a matter of finding them. If they know who this person is they have not revealed that to anybody in the media yet. In terms of the weapons themselves, they know that that sale to this person, that sale was legal here in california and they say they traced all four of those guns. All four were legal. All four were sold legally. But there is question about two of those rifles and perhaps some modification that were made to them to make them or attempt to make them automatic wells. And if that happened, if that worked for those guns, those guns would not be legal in california under the assault weapons ban in the state. Still so many questions. Okay, Chris Martinez live for us down in southern california. Chris, thank you. Last night, there was a tribute at a Minor League Baseball stadium in San Bernadino for the 14 dead and 21 injured. Some of syed farooks coworkers at the department of Public Health broke down. Its scary. I mean, we were in the building directly behind on the other side and it was scaring knowing it was so close to home and knowing that we have, um, people that were inside of there. I happened to have also been part of a workplace shooting in the mid90s in richmond, california, so i think i was prepared, um, on one hand to lead us through this. On the other hand, it affected me greatly. He said he sheltered in place in a hallway with some of his coworkers. Were also learning more about the shooting victims. 22yearold Jennifer Stevens is the youngest. She survived the shooting and is being treated at the hospital. Her mother described the moment when she got the call no parent ever wants to get. Mommy, i have been shot. Took the phone from her. I only knew until four hours later texted me, im okay. Again, in total, 14 people were killed and 21 others wounded. One of the First Responders to arrive at wednesdays mass shooting called the scene surreal. That officer is reliving the chaos and carnage he came upon. Don champion has more. Reporter when survivors were rushing away from danger, mike madden was rushing toward it. It was immediately evident that the reports that we were getting were 100 true. Reporter the San Bernardino Police Lieutenant was one of the first on the scene. It was unspeakable the carnage that we were seeing. Reporter quickly it became clear not even training could have prepared him for what was next. An active shooter we talk about overload, they try to throw everything at to you prepare you for dealing with that. What youre seeing, what youre hearing, what youre smelling, um, and it was all of that and more. Try to relax everyone, try to relax. Reporter inside the building, madden was among officers who guided people to safety. The initial 50 people did not want to come to us. They were fearful. Reporter that fear evident in cell phone video recorded by a survivor. Ill take the bullet before you do, thats for damn sure, so be cool, okay . That heightened my concern and my fear that potentially the suspects were in that hallway holding them hostage and waiting for us to enter into the hallway. We had to tell them several times, come to us, come to us. And ultimately they did. And once that first person took the motions forward, it opened the floodgates. [ sirens ] people dont call the police because they are having a great day. They call because theres tragedy going on. We resolved that situation quickly, but theres so much tragedy thats left behind. Reporter and many haunting memories, too. Don champion, cbs news. Madden is a San Bernardino native. He is also a 24year veteran of the San Bernardino police force. And be sure to stay here with kpix 5, cbssf. Com, for continuing coverage of the San Bernardino massacre.
