This was the scene on new years eve wednesday night at a buddhist temple in East San Jose. [ fireworks ] reporter the men lit long strands of firecrackers while parents brought their Young Children to watch. They believe it scares away evil spirits. It went on for hours. The thing is, though, fireworks are illegal in california. If you are wondering wheres the police . Well, they were right there. The temple hired these officers as private security so they kept an eye on the festivities from a distance. To understand how it all got to this point, we have to go back 15 years.
