Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger is here with details and jill, tell us what does deflation mean . Reporter it means a drop in the price of goods and services. In other words, its the exact opposite of inflation. Economists expect that the plunge in oil prices pushed down wholesale and Consumer Prices in december. We just got the ppi out actually, prices were down on the wholesale level 3 10ths of a percent from the previous month. And now we are looking at prices being lower sorry, higher from a year ago but only by about 1 . And for a frame of reference, the feds targeted 2 inflation. Well, shouldnt we like falling price . Yeah, i know. This is the counter intuitive, okay . But when deflation is persistent, it causes a vicious cycle. Companies reduce prices and leads into their processes and could lead to job and wage cuts causing consumers to spend less so they can pay for their fixed costs like taxes or mortgages. And the longer the deflation goes on, the higher the risk that people and businesses become accustomed to the situation and they just delay spending hoping they will eventually be able to buy things more cheaply. This basically puts the entire economy in neutral. So what are the economic pundits thinking . Is deflation coming . Reporter they are trying to determine whether the current drop in prices is temporary or something is brewing. Odds are while negative readings on inflation could persist month over month for the first half of the year, i think most would say the situation is probably temporary.
