The states historic drought is causing glaciers to melt here in california. As Elizabeth Cook shows us, its having a devastating impact on communities like mount shasta. Reporter this is what happens when californias drought goes rushing downstream. 15 miles of mud, eight feet deep, creating something between quicksand and concrete. This is the biggest mud floe we have seen in 90 years. Reporter outdoorsman Tom Steinstra has covered every inch of california. But he has never walked through anything like this. The aftermath of a shasta glacier left vulnerable by another winter with very little snow. The snow acts as a mortar for everything. It hold the mountain together. Reporter no snow and warm temperatures. At 10,000 feet this year, i measured it at 70 degrees. So we got a subliminal melting underneath the glaciers. Reporter from there, all it took was gravity. A crack in the glacier, a chunk falls, and all that water pours down and floods out the entire watershed system all the way down to the Mccloud River 15 miles away. Reporter and the danger isnt over. Emergency workers are now worried about the glaciers on shastas north slope and all of this is unfolding just minutes away from the site of last weeks fire that tore through the town of weed. This is one of the worst fire seasons for Siskiyou County in history. All those conditions are set up right now. Reporter a catastrophic fire, melting glaciers, and a landmark mud slide, all in one week on one mountain as the california landscape literally falls apart in our third year of drought. Yeah. Weve on the edge right now. We desperately need a normal winter. Reporter Elizabeth Cook, kpix 5. Maybe a little bit of relief. We had a little drizzle today and i guess you have a little cold front looking at doppler over there, huh. Yeah. This is great news for the fires around the state. This year we are getting rain coming our way. Right now we have some drizzle outside the door very damp on the roads but check it out. Our hidef Doppler Radar is tracking some raindrops, cold front just making its way into the state. It is up in far Northern California toward Crescent City and eureka already getting some rainfall. This is going to be a slow moving storm system so going to take the better part of the day to get here but we are seeing lots of clouds this morning and some drizzle out ahead of it. More clouds on the way into the afternoon. Then a chance of showers developing north of the Golden Gate Bridge later on this evening. Then rain spreading south as we head into tomorrow morning. So here we go. High pressure ahead of this system pretty impressive cold front for this time of year diving into the Pacific Northwest and the state. That will bring with it some rain into the bay area for tomorrow. Temperatures around the state youll still see some 80s and 90s into the Central Valley the further north you go the better chance you have of rainfall for today. Computer models timing you out for it a little bit. Well see increasing clouds into the afternoon then later on this evening showers developing in the north bay. Tomorrow it drags through the bay area and it could be slick tomorrow. That should move out by tomorrow afternoon, becoming partly cloudy and sunshine later on this afternoon. Temperatures today in the 70s maybe a couple of low 80s inland. 60s along the coastline. Next couple of days, looks like we are getting into the wet season early. Thats good news. Maybe a lingering shower on friday back to warming as we head into the weekend with more sunshine on the way. All right. Lets check the roads with elizabeth. Thank you, lawrence. Thank you, lawrence. And even though theres just a few sprinkles out the door this morning, chp is already working a dozen different incidents all around the bay area so obviously theres a few spinouts out there and overnight roadwork. So theres a couple of things that could slow you down. 880, they cleared the roadwork in the northbound direction. Southbound 880 though coming out of downtown, you will still hit some overnight roadwork likely for the next 10, 15 minutes and they will be picking that up. Right now the drive time looks good in both directions between san leandro and the macarthur maze. Your other bay area roadways heres a live look at the san mateo bridge. The right side of your screen commute direction still looks great no delay out of hayward. And bay bridge they much earlier cleared the overnight roadwork on the span. And so you can see its a nice drive except for the slick conditions approaching the bay bridge toll plaza, just slight delays in the far left cash lanes. I mentioned a couple of spinouts they continue to come in just kind of warning of these slick roads and how you should really slow it down. Heres another one eastbound 24 in lafayette approaching oak hill. That one blocking a lane. And then another one we have a slight location change also countercommute eastbound 80 approaching richmond parkway. No delay in either direction and mass transit is on time. That is traffic. Back to you guys. Thank you, liz. Cupertinobased apple plans to build a new store in San Francisco but theres an issue they cant tiptoe around apparently. The City Arborist said these trees are in fair or Good Condition each the seven trees. We said lets not take them out. We want to grow our urban forest, not destroy it in any way. No one wants to see lawsuits. No one wants to see lawsuits tie up a project as important as this is to the city.
