We had an earlier accident near the truck scales. Westbound 580 heavy from 205 straight to North Livermore avenue and sluggish to the dublin interchange. I mentioned that earlier accident. Still reportedly out there, westbound highway 4 approaching willow pass. Not seeing any delay on our sensors, though, all of it is farther east right there at hillcrest to a street. You can see all the slowdowns coming into antioch. Mass transit we had some troubles yesterday. So far not the case this morning. Were off to a great start with all mass transit. Think of the mac and imac bowed announced here originally. Experts think it will be historic for apple whatever it is. Apple is widely expected to unveil a wearable device which some people call the iwatch. It might be able to do things like track your health and control devices in your home. The company will also likely announce not one but two new phones. The current iphone 5s has a 4 screen but evidence is pointing to a 4. 7 and 5. 5 screen they are calling it the iphone 6. These bigger screens have been nicknamed phablets which is a cross between a phone and tablet. And then theres technology called Near Field Communication or nfc which allows nearby devices to talk to one another and do things like transfer money or unlock a door. Analysts think they will be merged together. While, yes, i could pull out my iphone and i believe the iphone will have nfc as well, but i think a wearable has a level of convenience that consumers just have never tried. And once they try it, they will be hooked. Reporter so tim was talking about an experience he had at disneyland where he had a wristwatch kind of a thing where it allowed him to unlock his hotel room, pay for refreshments, fastpasses for the rides. He is thinking thats where apple goes where you get an iwatch with the Nfc Technology built in. We are thinking iphones will ship in september and the watch in january. I didnt get a credentialed pass. Im not going inside. Thats for fancier reporters if you will. But, you know, thats how it goes here. They only allow two crew members from each station. Today marks four years since the deadly pg e pipeline explosion that killed eight people in san bruno. Kpix 5s ryan takeo joins us live in san bruno with an update on the citys ongoing recovery. Reporter hi, frank. September 9 a tough day here in san bruno especially here in the crestmoor neighborhood. This afternoon there will be a ceremony to honor the eight victims who died four years ago today. Now, as far as the rebuilding process, the city says that there are still 10 empty lots that still need to be rebuilt. And they expect that to happen in the next year or so. 24 houses have been rebuilt. Four of the eight families who lost loved ones here are still in the neighborhood. The citys mayor has been relentlessly an advocate for Pipeline Safety reform since it happened. At a press conference he continued to call out pg e and its ceo. It was not an accident. And we are outraged by his prolonged refusal to take responsibility for killing eight of our citizens. It is time for pg e to stop calling this an accident and accept the level of penalty as proposed. Reporter pg e plans to appeal the cpucs 1. 4 billion dollar fine. That was levied last week. Much of that money will go to the states general fund. During the press conference san brunos mayor demanded that the money go to a Pipeline Safety trust fun. Ryan, what is pg e saying about why its appealing that big fine. Reporter i talked to a spokesman yesterday and basically he says that the Company Thinks that the 1. 4 billion is too steep. So thats why the company is appealing. It says its taking responsibility and is in a partnership with the city of san bruno but the city says that thats not true, that the company is not taking the right amount of responsibility. A pilot from san jose is dead after a crash at the Reno National Championship Air races. 64yearold lee behel was a retired Fighter Pilot and winner of the reno events fourth class competition in 2008. Organizers say he was flying solo in a qualifying heat yesterday when the accident happened at the reno stead airport. He had taken part in the races over the past two decades. One of the favorite pilots out here, everybody enjoyed him. He was very enthusiastic and really talented pilot. So its a hard day. Investigators have not yet determined why the experimental gp5 aircraft crashed. Witnesses on the ground say there appear to be some sort of mechanical failure. No one else was injured. The reno event was the scene of an Even Deadlier crash three years ago. Then a pilot and ten spectators were killed when a small plane crashed into the grandstand. Faulty screws caused parts of the plane to fail. Some fresh search dogs have been working near cupertino as teams continue looking for a Mountain Lion in the hills nearby. Dogs were exhausted from the search in the rugged terrain yesterday. They are tracking a Mountain Lion that pounced on a 6year old boy on sunday and if they catch it and identify it, the cat will be put to death. If we can conclusively determine that this is the animal or that an animal we catch is the animal that attacked this child it will be euthanized. The boy who was attacked is now out of the hospital. The trails where it happened are still closed now to the public. Bodies of two malaysians killed in the downing of flight mh17 were brought home. The remains arrived in kuala lumpur yesterday. There were 43 malaysians on the flight. 298 people were killed when the plane was brought down in eastern ukraine. A new report from the Dutch Safety Board says the plane was likely struck by high Energy Objects from outside. 6 10. Whether or not one is actually called the iphone 6, the experts at cnet are predicting well see two new phones. Right now they have 4 screens. We think will will be 4. 7 and a phablet size, a hybrid. Reporter more storage and new health and home automation suites, offering Near Field Communication or nfc. Its a technology that paves the way for mobile payments. You tap your phone on something, like you can tap two phones together, you can tap a phone to a speaker, to pair them. You can also do it with mobile payments, tap it on the register and you pay. You dont have to get out a credit card. Reporter apple is also expected to unveil a wearable device which many have dubbed the iwatch. While it wont likely replace a phone and may not actually be a watch, it is expected to do a lot. It probably will also have nfc so you can do mobile payments. To ship outside of taiwan and parts of china have been booked by one company over the next two weeks. We are seeing the usual slowdowns in antioch, hillcrest to a street. You maybe get a slight break around somersville but then again a big backup heading on to the concord side of things. Once you got past willow pass, things look better southbound 680 clear to walnut creek and then it continues to look good on 24 all the way to the caldecott tunnel. Bay bridge toll plaza stacked up through the maze westbound 580 sluggish from the 24 interchange. Frank and michelle back to you guys. Thank you. A man locked up, up in oregon is the prime suspect in a series of bay area murders 40 years ago. Five women were scabbed to death in San Mateo County in 1976. Now a 76yearold, rodney halbower, is linked to the killings through dna evidence. The dna came from a similar killing in reno and early this year, the fbi had a lunch there might be a connection. We had reason to believe the deaths are linked based on evidence between a number of cases. Time frame of the murders and the method used by the offender to commit the crimes. Five murders all on the peninsula happened from january to april in 1976. They were called the gypsy hill murders for the road in pacifica where one of the victims was found. It was four years ago today the pg e pipeline explosion forever changed a san bruno neighborhood. Eight people were killed and 38 homes destroyed on this date in 2010. Kpix 5s ryan takeo has an update on the citys rebuilding progress. Reporter that rebuilding process is still under way. There have been some lots where homes have not been rebuilt but many of the survivors still live in the naked. Neighborhood. You might wonder about the 10 empty lots if you werent here four years ago. Adrian knows. He was here. Its an event where you remember how everything went. It just remains with you. Reporter as the explosion and fireball tore through this neighborhood, adrian arrived to rescue his cousins whose house is barely 100 yards from the blast zone. Their home survived and has been repaired. The nextdoor neighbor wasnt so lucky. Seeing it now, i cant believe that there used to be houses, like, there, you know, and just gone. Reporter she says the neighborhood where she grew up has changed in positive ways, as well. Beautiful new homes are springing up with attractive landscaping. Older homes have been repaired and freshly painted. And in an ironic twist, pg e has had to pay for a lot of new solar panels. But no amount of landscaping can change the fact that there is still a huge hole in this neighborhood. Something like that happens to you, it leaves a scar kind of gives you a little bit of [ pause ] battle fatigue. Reporter those who died will never be forgotten by those who survived. But the fouryear struggle to rebuild has had one more lasting effected on the people who live here. Whenever i see them, its like hey, hows it going, hows your day . We definitely got closer. This terrible event really brought people together. Reporter so the tragedy that tore this neighborhood apart four years ago is now continuing to make it stronger than ever. The the rebuilding and Recovery Process continue here in the crestmoor neighborhood. The latest headline in the case, a 1. 4 billion fine handed down from the cpuc to pg e. The utility plans to appeal. Live in san bruno, im ryan takeo, kpix 5. San bruno officials think the fine against pg e is appropriate. But they want the bulk of the money to go to Pipeline Safety rather than the states general fund. If you are planning to buy one of the new iphones being unveiled today you might want to sell your old one. Most money from your iphone i would sell it as soon as possible. These are only going to lose value as they get older. When the new iphone comes out everybody will look for that so now is the time to sell. If previous iphones are any indicator your 5 has probably lost 10 of its value over the last two months. The top retail sites are offering up to 320 for a 5s. And your phone will likely loose another 5 of the value in the next 10 days leading up to the september 19 release date and drop another 20 by november. Values often see a slight increase around the holidays. Its 6 39 now. San mateo county sheriff is asking people to pay an extra buck when registering their cars. The he wants to use that money to reduce auto thefts. Right now only 1 is collected per registration to investigate vehicle crimes. The sheriff says the fee was set in 1994. Its not enough. In 2012 there were more than 1,000 cars stolen in the county. Happening today in sonoma county, protestors are expected to greet the board of supervisors ahead of their meeting tonight in santa rosa. Possibly lifting security over what we do with credit cards and how often they are taken by hackers out there. The company is looking to improve sales a samsung. Its grabbed the Smartphone Market around the world with larger screens. Its also expected to unveil the iwatch getting into the wearable business. And its focused on fitness. That probably wont be available for some time. Iphone is already in production. The iwatch would be something completely new. Also, this morning, berkeley based annies is being bought by General Mills for 820 million. Thats a 37 premium over the companys Closing Price on monday. Annies has done very well in the Natural Foods segment and General Mills says its the First Company to help lead its organic natural food business going forward. Stock market is pulling back.
