Yesterday afternoon, fire from a car accident on highway 152 spread to dry grass. At one point the fire jumped the narrow highway burning on both sides of the road. Embers land across the road and catch fire. They take off from there. That stretch of 152 was closed for several hours. Right now, one eastbound lane remains closed. That could be trouble for labor day travel. Highway 152 is the main route from Santa Clara Valley to interstate 5 for folks driving to southern california. Cal fire says 80 acres have burned and the fire is 50 contained. New this morning, a motorcyclist is dead after an accident near the bay bridge in oakland. It happened on interstate 80 just before 11 p. M. Last night. Chp says a woman in her 30s riding westbound when she crashed just before the toll plaza. The road is clear. Investigators still working out the details on what happened. And people going from the peninsula to downtown San Francisco or to at t park over the weekend need to know the regular route might be closed. Northbound interstate 280 closed between 101 and downtown. The retrofit project will take all weekend and will reopen in time for the morning commute on tuesday after labor day. Causing a lot of headaches for commuters, elizabeth. I know. Especially with those giants games going on all weekend long over at at t park. Right now we have been watching the road sensors. Overall the volume of traffic is down so 101 will be your best alternate and were not seeing any delay right now heading into downtown san francisc on 101. A few slowdowns southbound 280. A crash this albany eastbound 580 approaching buchanan coming off the Richmond San Rafael bridge. Some folks may have been caught in backup. Still some slowdowns but all lanes reopened. The city says it has already collected 2. 6 Million Pounds of earthquake debris. Thats four times what would be normally collected over four days. A new sinkhole opened up on a street in west napa and they arent sure whether it was caused by a quake or aftershock. About 400 people still dont have Running Water and the city hopes to restore service by the weekend. The Napa Food Bank is handing out groceries to the victims of the earthquake. They were ready thanks to extra donations from the community and other bay area food banks. Developing news. San jose police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a car near a preschool in the citys evergreen neighborhood. Police were called about 11 00 yesterday morning after someone made the discovery in a Church Parking lot at aborn and kett mann roads. The victim had been stabbed. The coroner conducted an investigation and it will be investigated as a homicide. There is no word of motive or suspect. Grace Lutheran Church also houses a preschool. Parents say the school did call them to pick up children early. The San Jose Police department is giving up a 15 ton armored vehicle. The sjwd got it earlier this year through a military surplus program. The vehicle was designed to withstand explosives and would have been used to protect San Jose Police Department Officers in extreme situations. But critics expressed concerns will local police having military equipment. President obama is trying to tone down speculation about further military intervention in iraq and syria. They said something caught in the engine so we had to turn around. Kpix 5s consumerwatch reporter julie watts explains. Reporter actually, hawaiian is abiding by its contract of carriage which is actually better than most other airlines. Now, their policy for delays over six hours is to provide one nights hotel room, transportation to that hotel, one meal voucher, no alcohol, and one Long Distance call. They say they will put you on the next available flight with a seat in your same class or you can choose to cancel altogether and they will give you a refund or they will give you a voucher to be used within a year. As it stands, though, passengers are out of luck if they have already paid for hotel rooms in hawaii and wont be making it. In the newsroom, julie watts, kpix 5. It is 6 32 now. A major retrofit project has a San Francisco freeway closed over the labor day weekend. Caltrans shut down northbound interstate 280 between 101 and the downtown area. This is the third and the final closure of that stretch of roadway. Caltrans is working to install some new hinges near cesar chavez street to help the freeway survive an earthquake. The road will be closed to northbound traffic until tuesday morning. New this morning, a woman is dead after a motorcycle accident near the bay bridge in oakland. It happened on interstate 80 just before 11 00 last night. The chp says the motorcyclist, a woman in her 30s, was heading westbound when she crashed just before the toll plaza. The road is now clear and investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened. On that traffic note, lets check in with liz. But minutes after that was cleared we had another one reported northbound 101 at silver so all of a sudden traffic is backed up from at least 3rd and the 280 extension is not going to be usable for the entire Holiday Weekend northbound 280 closed from 101 to king street as you just heard frank and michelle just mention. Labor day weekend has not really begun yet but already, theres a major traffic problem on highway 152 the main route between Santa Clara Valley and interstate 5 for folks trying to travel down to southern california. Kpix 5s keit do has more on a wildfire that has one lane closed in each direction near casa de fruta. Reporter air tankers took to the skies to battle a brush fire started by a car fire. Cal fire says a prius hit a guardrail on 152 westbound. No one was hurt but crash sparked a 30acre fire on the north side of the freeway and jumped to the south side causing another 50acre fire. Embers from the existing fire get blown across the highway and they land in the reciprocal fuel bed and catch on fire and take off. Reporter highway 152 was shut down in both directions for several hours making it difficult for crews from merced, santa clara, santa cruz and monterey counties to get there. At least 14 people are injured, 4 seriously, after a shuttle bus slammed into a median at ohare International Airport this morning. The crash happened as the bus was headed to the departure terminal. The accident caused major traffic delays, dozens of people started getting out of cars and taxis and walking to the terminals. Busy airport. Well, americans slowed their spending last month. Apparently people didnt spend as much money or vehicles or at the Department Store and that let to a 1 10 of a percent spending in july. Thats the first decline in several months. Now, americans did not get much help from their employers. Incomes were up only twotenths of a percent. That was a weakest gain in wages since last december. On the other hand people did put more money away. The savings rate increased from 5. 4 to 5. 7 . The highest savings rate since the end of 2012. Tesla has entered into a partnership with a chinese firm to build a charging Network Across china. 400 stations which would link 120 cities.
