Kpix 5s anne makovec in the newsroom reports oakland officials want something done even if they have to do it themselves, anne. Reporter the state kill switch bill already passed the senate and its now working its way through the state assembly. But city leaders in oakland are creating a backup plan saying if the state doesnt mandate a kill switch, they will. Kill switch refers to a smartphones ability to be remotely rendered inoperable making it worthless to thieves. This is Surveillance Video of some of the brazen cell phone robberies in San Francisco. Now, newer apple iphones do have a kill switch. Users have to opt in to the feature but its been proving successful. New crime data shows iphone robberies in San Francisco dropped 38 since those phones hit the market. The problem with the current state of affairs is that even if you are not using the Kill Switch Technology on the phone, the thief out there know that more than half of the consumers do not have theirs activated so its a matter of playing the odds. Reporter google and microsoft are expected to incorporate a kill switch into the next version of their operating systems on smartphones. The bill in the California Legislature would mandate those features be automatic instead of optional to phone users. Also to attract young women to the field, they have to feel like they are making an impact and it has to be fun. College students who pursue a career in hightech are battling outdated stereotypes, as well. My main problem was the stigma around it, oh, you do a Computer Science you must be antisocial and not talk to anybody. I think thats something that i dont know if it hurts women young girls more than it hurts young boys but it definitely affected me a lot. Reporter and so the made with Code Campaign kicks off in new york city today with appearances by indy rockers icana pop, mindy and Chelsea Clinton will be making remarks. Thank you, kiet. Target date funds have grown in popularity. You may have used or seen those funds inside your retirement account which aim to invest for future dates. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger says you need to be careful about these seemingly simple investments. She joins us live now and lets start by reviewing what target date funds actually are, jill. Reporter they allow you to outsource your retirement money to a Management Company that will rebalance your portfolio periodically and adjust the risks in the account as you near your desired retirement age. Now, this seems like a simple idea and, in fact, the government even likes it. They now allow plans to use target date funds as the default Investment Option for anyone who enrolls. So now we know what target date fund are. What do we need to know about them . Reporter i think a lot of people have no idea that theres real risk within these funds. For example, i looked up the current allocation of a fidelity 2030 fund. So it is 86 in stocks, 14 in bond. Know, if you are a 50yearold and targeting 2030 as my retirement age you might say thats a balanced portfolio but the allocation in reality is one that would take a big downside hit if the stock market were to drop. Additionally, i should note that the fees for a lot of these funds can be steeper than index investments which are usually offered within plans, as well. I guess a lot of investors misuse target date funds, too. How do they do that . Reporter well, according to a recent study, more than 60 of workers who hold money in a target date fund they also invest in other funds. Of course, this undermines the allinone benefits for participants and can pile up on the risk. The misuse is hurting your returns on average workers who were partially allocated to target date funds with median annual runs were 2 lower. You have to go in with your eyes open. Go to jillonmoney.
