This 1200acre fire in the san marcos area is just 5 contained. But today firefighters hope to get some help from the weather. David begnaud is live in San Diego County where the fires have destroyed at least 8 houses and 18unit apartment complex and two businesses, as well. David, whats the latest . Good morning. Reporter frank and michelle, good morning to you. In san marcos where we are this morning, under the cover of darkness, this fire is still burning relatively out of control. In fact, behind me, if you take a look, this is one of the eight homes that was destroyed. The good news is, in other parts of the county, firefighters are starting to get the upper hand on blazes outside of san marcos but the big question is, whats the weather going to do once the sunrises . Reporter flames in san marcos lit up the night sky as the stubborn wildfire continued to burn keeping people from their homes. Hopefully we can get back in, but even then the smoke has to clear. Reporter choppers swept in to put out hot spots along smoldering hillsides thursday. [ sirens ] evacuate [ knocking ] reporter but tripledigit temperatures and winds sparked flareups and forced authorities to evacuate thousands more residents. Scott martin and his family are taking up shelter at a hotel for now. There were black clouds and flames coming down the hill from our to our front door. Reporter the fire is burning everything in its path. This home behind me in san marcos reduced to rubble. Firefighters say what makes this wildfire so difficult to battle is that its essentially creating its own weather pattern as it sucks in oxygen. Further west in carlsbad crews have made significant progress. That news, though, did little to comfort residents who have completely lost their homes. Im very upset. But what can you say . Im alive. And its okay. You just have to look at it that way, i guess. Reporter cooler temperatures and calmer winds are forecast for today. And firefighters say that could help them gain more control of the multiple fires burning around san diego. And there has been at least one firerelated death reported over in the city of carlsbad. Officials say an individual was found in what is identified as a transient camp. Before that body was found, no one had been reported missing. Frank and michelle, back to you. Thank you. Lets go to weather now. I guess the cooldown up here and down there, too, for the firefighters. They are going to get an onshore breeze and higher humidities so that makes it less likely the fires will spread. Thats good news. A lot of folks looking forward to cooler temperatures today. We are going to see that as we have a lot of clouds moving overhead right now some high clouds above and some low clouds moving in along the coastline and just inside the bay. So looking out over the bay its mostly cloudy start to the day. You will notice these temperatures are quite a bit cooler. Yesterday we had numbers in the mid to upper 60s in some spots. Today 40s and some 50s. Looks like by the afternoon, still warm inland but much cooler than its been. Well still find some 80s in the valleys. A lot of 70s and 80s inside the bay and along the coastline keeping you much cooler with patchy fog about 66 degrees. All right. Lets check the roads now with elizabeth. Thanks, lawrence. Overall just a few minor bumps in the road. Heres a noninjury accident. It is off to the righthand shoulder. But may still be some activity out there leaving daly city. Southbound 280 right around the john daly exit so heads up. Not seeing any delay on our sensors. And now that were past 5 00 a lot of the overnight roadwork, the bulk of it really has cleared out or it should be cleared up according to caltrans. Heres a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. The macarthur maze roadwork is gone and now they should have cleared that roadwork on the incline, as well. Live look at the golden gate bridge, its a beautiful commute so far both directions of 101 into and out of San Francisco. Also 37 should have just reopened as well between 121 and highway 29. A man is in custody suspected in the murder of a woman in the East San Jose foothills. Officers responded to a home on canyon ridge drive about 5 00 yesterday afternoon. They found the woman with several stab wounds. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police arrested a man who was in the home. They say the suspect and victim knew each other and so far theres no word on a motive. 57yearold woman is dead after a confrontation with police in concord. Investigators say the woman dialed up 911 yesterday afternoon to say she had a gun and was suicidal. Officers went to the home on pacheco street where the woman met them out front. One of the officers opened fire when the woman refused orders to drop her weapon. The faa is looking into a near miss over the pacific ocean. A united flight was headed from kona, hawaii to los angeles international. Suddenly, in midflight, it dropped 600 feet. The pilot announced the dive was to avoid crashing into a u. S. Airways plane that was flying in the opposite direction can at the same altitude. A San Francisco man was on that united flight. Turmoil, noise, scary experience. Word of the incident is coming out three weeks after the incident. Kiet do is in mineta san jose airport the scene of an incident last month that had representative Eric Swalwell looking for changes. He said thats what kept it from jumping the road and coming on to our property. The cause of the fire still under investigation. The homeowner got out in time and there were no injuries. Six of the fires were reported this morning. Most were small brush fires. Three fires were near each of the other. A homeowner suffered smoke inhalation trying to put out one of the fires. New this morning, two new jersey men have now been arraigned on murder charges accused of burying a woman alive. Authorities say the two men have admitted to killing fatima perez. On wednesday they allegedly kidnapped her put tape over her eyes and took her to the woods. The victims family went yesterday as prosecutors described what happened. Al zea and the nettie admitted that they put miss perez in the hole that they poured lime on her and buried her. He advised detectives that she was still alive when they burned her. Authorities say a suspect who was perezs landscaper lured her into his van by offering to drive her to buy a new car. She had 8,000 in cash. Detectives made the arrest after the womans family says she had told them about a car buying errant. Sterling was supposed to pay that fine earlier this week. Now the letter his lawyer sent could be the precursor to a lawsuit. The letter was sent to the nba. It says not only will sterling not pay the fine, it says he shouldnt face punishment at all for making racist comments that were recorded by a female companion. The nbas commissioner has promised to try to force sterling to sell the clippers. Just this week in an interview with Cnns Anderson Cooper sterling said he thought the commissioners punishment seemed harsh but he seems to have come to terms with the fine. You say its a little harsh. Is it fair . Oh, i dont know if its fair. I mean, maybe its fair. I mean, for all the aggravation, all the embarrassment, all the humiliation i caused, maybe its fair. San mateo bridge still looks very good westbound and eastbound 92 up and over the highrise. If you are coming through the Altamont Pass at grant line we are getting first reports of an accident. Its hard to tell at this point if its even blocking lanes. We are starting to see the slowdowns coming from 205 and continuing almost through the livermore valley. Once you get to dublin pleasanton this is a live look on the approach hacienda to 680. Everything is pretty much moving at the speed limit. Southbound 680 looks good through the sunol grade and the look at the south bay northbound 101 at tully. Again first reports of an accident. This one is off to the right hand shoulder so we put up the speed sensor, 64 miles per hour. You may spot the accident out there but its not going to slow you down much. Same story in daly city. Southbound 280 by john daly, another accident quickly cleared to the righthand shoulder. So again the bottom line none of these accidents is blocking lanes which is is really what creates the hot spot. Heres a live look outside. The macarthur maze roadwork wrapped up ahead of schedule. Most of the overnight roadwork is out of there including on the span itself. Westbound 580 incline to Yerba Buena Island all lanes back open. All the approaches are very quiet. Like a breath of fresh air the low clouds and fog have returned the sea breeze too so the temperatures are going to be coming down across the board today. So no more 90s or triple digits. Thats some good news if you have been looking forward to some cooler weather so looks like were headed back to normal over the weekend. The wildfires in San Diego County are so intense, the smoke can be seen from space. Crews are hopeful about their battle against the fires even though more evacuation notices were issued yesterday. Firefighters hope to get some help from Mother Nature as weather conditions settle down a bit. Kpix 5s cate caugiran is live in fremont where some firefighters have headed south to help in that effort. Cate. Reporter it not just fremont firefighters. Were talking a whole bunch of firefighters from the east bay including hayward, oakland, livermore, pleasanton and Alameda County are helping to put out this monstrous blaze. Fremont Fire Department posted this photo of its strike team after arriving from a 12hour drive. From whirl winds of smoke caused by the heat and the winds to swirling flames that rise out of the burning vegetation, the wildfires in Southern California seemed to have lives of their own. Conditions unfortunately in Southern California have just been ripe with the large winds, the santa ana winds, and very, very dry. Reporter a number of homes have already been destroyed. We were coming up the driveway we saw it and all broke down started crying. I have never seen anything like it. It was absolutely gorgeous. And now its all gone. All gone. What can i say . Reporter some of the fires burn in the foothills near the San Marcos Campus of cal state university. Two others burn in areas on marine corps airbase camp pendleton. One of them relatively small, the other covering nearly 10 square miles. Doubt conditions in california combined with strong winds and near tripledigit temperatures prime weather for wildfires. In fact, for us, the conditions like this in may, its unheard of. Its unprecedented to see this type of weather and fuel conditions but we prepared for that not only cal fire but all the local cooperators in california. Reporter with all of california dealing with severe to exceptional drought conditions, Officials Say fire season is now year round. At least one person has been killed and this morning fire crews are hoping that the weather or cooler weather will continue to help them gain ground in fighting this fire. Live in fremont, cate caugiran, kpix 5. The most concern at this point is a 1200acre fire in the san marcos area. Its now just 5 contained. Back here in the bay area now, investigators in novato are checking for links to eight small fires in the last 24 hours. Six of the fires reported this morning most small brush fires. The fires were all near to one another on south novato boulevard. A homeowner actually suffered smoke inhalation trying to put out one of the fires. Mother nature needs to step in and help out. I think today we are going to see those changes. We are going to see more of a sea breeze, higher humidity and hopefully the winds calming down so thats good news for them. Here locally we have been talking about recordbreaking temperatures this week but thats long gone now. We are seeing that sea breeze kicking in. We have patchy fog along the coastline, high clouds up above. And yeah, we are going to start cooling things down nicely around the bay area today. So if you have been looking for some heat relief we are going to get it. Nice shot this morning clouds out over the bay bridge hazy there as well but temperatures cooler than where they have been over the last couple of days. Of course, we have been in the 60s at this time but today 40s and 50s. So cooler start and a cooler finish, too. Plan on 60s out toward the coastline with some patchy fog. [ woman ] and i love new orleans five suspicious fires. In around walnut creeks arbolo park. The investigators are looking into five suspicious fires in and around a park in walnut creek. The police have no leads on any suspects now. But they are certain all the fires were intentionally set. Investigators are looking into what caused a fouralarm fire at a recycling plant that standard at 8 p. M. Last night spreading through wood pallets causing propane tanks to explode. At one point flames reached heights of 60 feet. It took crews almost two hours to knock down the fire. There could be a new lead in the case of the Zodiac Killer nearly 50 years after a series of murders that remain unsolved. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has more on the man who claims to be the serial killers son. Reporter gary stewart lays out his case in a new book called the most dangerous animal of all, search for my father and finding the Zodiac Killer. Heres the Police Sketch of the Zodiac Killer who wrote letters to San Francisco newspapers in the 60s claiming he murdered 37 people in Northern California. Five have been confirmed by police. Stewart says when he looked at that sketch it looked strikingly similar to a picture he found while looking for his biological father. Earl van best, jr. , who is now deceased. I think i let out an aud incidentally scream, police to i think i let out an audible scream, noise, and my son comes out and looks at me fixed on the television, and he says, hey, dad, its you. Reporter steward said no, it was actually his father. Stewart was abandoned and adopted as a child. He says he found handwriting and physical evidence that his father is the Zodiac Killer including a scar on a fingerprint found at one of the murder sites. Southbound 280 by john daly we have been watching this accident for a while. Turns out they did some damage to a pole in the area so caltrans crews may have to fix it. We are seeing a few tapping of the brake lights behind that accident even though reportedly no lanes are blocked. All the activity is off to the right side shoulder. Sluggishan accident called for tow crews approaching grant line but not blocking lanes just very heavy right now all the way into pleasanton. Mass transit is on time. The heat wave has been driving some folks crazy but thats ended now as more of a sea breeze kicks in. High and low clouds are moving in even patchy fog long the coastline. So some changes in the works for today and much different over the weekend. Those hot temperatures that were record breakers the middle of the week are long gone now. Still, mostly sunny this afternoon but cooler temperatures and then more clouds and cooler weather over the weekend. High pressure now beginning to weaken somewhat sliding to the south and east. Got this area of low pressure thats starting to work its way toward the coastline. That will ramp up the low clouds and fog and also the sea breeze and that will make its way into the valleys but not the Central Valley just yet. Its going to stay to the there. 101 in fresno, 95 in sacramento, 72 degrees into monterey bay and partly cloudy skies. Patchy fog though going to linker along the coastline for today and, of course, that sea breeze will keep those temperatures cooler out toward the beaches but even that cool air is going to start to work its way into some of the valleys, too.
