Freeze warnings up for today have been extended now until tomorrow morning. Thats because the storm system headed toward the bay area is going to come in later. No relief from the cold. We are getting word of some new signal issues. This is impacting ace train number 1. Apparently its actually stopped right now while maintenance crews go in and figure out the problem. So you get the idea, we are working on a very cold start to the morning. By the afternoon, plenty of sunshine. But still some very chilly temperatures as that cold arctic air sits overhead. Tomorrow morning another cold morning and then the possibility of some showers late in the day. So here it is. That cold arctic air mass looking like its going to hang around for another day and then sliding further east but today, cold around much of the state. And then late in the day this system starts to dive into the bay area bringing with it a chance of showers looks like tomorrow evening and then into early saturday morning. A newspaper deliveryman smelled the smoke at the house on larkin drive about 2 00 this morning and called 911. Firefighters tell us the couple was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Now, in the southern part of the county, here in santa clara county, in gilroy, in fact, workers were busy covering up plants and big white tarps moving them indoors at an avocado and citrus plant nursery. The smaller plants are the most vulnerable to the cold. The plants are worth hundreds even thousands of dollars. At hardware and Gardening Stores in morgan hill customers cleared the shelves, snapping up frost protection items like tarps and most of them sold out by noon. I just planted everything. And so this is actually my first round at gardening. So i was told to protect it. Part of gardening. You have to be careful and protect your plants. Reporter all righty. They are working to clear it but that southbound 880 commute is just kind of slowandgo right now from 238 it looks like heading out of san leandro all the way down towards the whipple exit. The suspect accused of killing a daly city man over a playstation is being held on 5 million bail this morning. 21yearold Ronnie Collins now charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted robbery. Prosecutors believe collins shot 22yearold Ikenna Uwakah sunday after uwakah and his girlfriend arranged to sell him their ps4 game console through instagram. A thief rummaging through a home in fremont was caught on camera here. He broke into the house on eggers drive on saturday and stole 2,000 worth of stuff. Two Home Security cameras caught him in the act. Fremont police are hoping someone will recognize this thief. A San Jose Police officers badge is missing. The Department Says someone stole it from the officers personal car at Alum Rock Park yesterday afternoon. No weapons were taken. Dozens of children were left out in the freezing cold when an Apartment Building caught fire in san leandro. This is a live look at chateau bleu apartments on bancroft. It started at 4 30 this morning. About 50 people including the children evacuated the building. San leandro high school opened early so evacuees could take shelter inside. Many wearing just that pajamas are in the cafeteria. Firefighters say the flames started in a first floor unit and spread and it took crews 50 minutes to knock it down. Reporter very much welcome news for the job market. The Labor Department reporting that first time weekly unemployment claims plunged by 23,000 to 298,000 lowest level since may of 2007. The fourweek average also tumbling lower by more than 10,000 to just over 322,000 certainly bodes well for that november jobs report due from labor on friday. Another key economic report from the Commerce Department an Overall Economic growth in the 3rd quarter. It revised its initial estimate from 2. 8 to 3. 6 strongest growth in a year and a half. A lot of that came from the biggest buildup in business inventory since 1998. Otherwise Consumer Spending was down and overall sales of u. S. Good and service down but still stronger than the growth we saw in the 2nd quarter at around 2. 5 . Now, the stock market takes this good news and starts heading the other way thinking this will likely mean the Federal Reserve will start to taper its monthly bond purchases. We had an earlier accident at cutting which quickly cleared to the righthand shoulder but that upper eastshore freeway still busy as you can see there through richmond heading into berkeley. Once you reach the bay bridge getting past all that traffic at the toll plaza, things look good across the span heading towards fremont street or coming into San Francisco towards the skyway. Even 38 degrees on the coastline in pacifica. This afternoon, well see those temperatures start to moderate a little bit but still chilly. Plenty of sunshine all day long but highs will only be in the 40s and the 50s. And then the freeze warnings extended now until tomorrow morning. Looks like the showers will not come until late in the day if we see them a all. Cold air into the gulf of alaska down to the bay area and across the midsection to bring frigid temperatures. Today at sfo mostly sunny skies no delays. Across the country denver going to see a high today of 9 degrees. A friend send me a text with a temperature of 5 degrees below zero in colorado springs. Some more breaking news this morning out of stockton where a man wanted on attempted murder charges in san jose was shot and killed by the police there. We are told chp began chasing the mans vehicle on interstate 5 about 1 00 this morning. Authorities say the 43yearold suspect eventually stopped the car, got out, but had a knife in his hand. Stockton Police Officer shot and killed the man after he refused to drop that knife. And another traffic check towards the bay bridge a final look and you can see that traffic is jamming up beyond the overcrossing. Its quickly backing up towards the maze.
