Firefight, man or mother nature. The fire started right here with a lot of fuel and rapid spread because of slope. Reporter monday afternoon mount diablo erupted in flames looking more like a volcano with smoke in the air and 50 to 75 homes on the ground in the fires path. Those residents told to lock up and leave immediately. Especially on Morgan Territory road. They have a long way to go for Fire Protection and they have a lot of animals and fuel for fire. So its a big concern. Reporter on the attack, 250 firefighters dozens of fire trucks, a handful of aircraft, even a couple of bulldozers to do the heavy lifting. Temperatures were very high and the fuel and topography are extreme influencing the spread of this fire. Reporter the where has burned a lot of land but not much damage to property only a cell phone tower so far. No homes burned, and nobody hurt. Yeah. Everybody is concerned. And we are concerned for the safety of everyone and for those fighting the fire. Reporter there hasnt been much wind overnight but let me show you whats burning up the side of the mountain. This is brown brittle brush. It is the fuel to the fire and there is plenty of it. Brian webb, kpix 5. Fire crews are expected to resume aerial water drops over the fire after sunrise around 7 a. M. We have another view of the fire. This is from chopper 5. A corkscrew of smoke plumes were seen rising from the peak of mount diablo at times looking like a volcano. Fire crews had their handful as they climbed up the side of the mountain. People have seen smoke and flames from all across the east bay. Now, more evacuations were ordered last night because of the morgan fire. Earlier evacuations in the curry point area including curry canyon road and oak hill lane. Overnight people were ordered from about two dozen more homes, as well. They are along russell mann park, trail ride road, east trail road, upper trail road and lower trail road. Evacuees are advised to go to the Clayton Community library on clayton road. Linda yee was there as people arrived last night to make arrangements for the evening. Reporter this is the Clayton Community library which is being used as a checkin site for those families who have been evacuated. So far only a handful of those families from about 75 properties that were ordered evacuated have used the center. It is a place for people to rest or use the phones. The community here has been very generous. Some people not affected by the evacuation have offered rooms in their homes. Evacuees we talked to say the fire was close but they are hopeful firefighters will gain the upper hand soon. We didnt even see any flames. We saw a lot of smoke. Were thinking, you know, we were told it was a quarter mile away. That seems a little close if the wind changed, it could be dangerous. We didnt feel we were in a lot of danger. Reporter were you worried . Towards the end i could see the smoke coming over the hills and i was worried but didnt see any flames so i was happy about that. Reporter one woman is driving around with a trailer just in case any rancher may need to move any animals. In the time of crisis, a lot of generosity has come forth. In clayton, linda yee, kpix 5. Another fire burned in Sonoma County this weekend. It started around 1 30 yesterday afternoon as a fire in a ditch then started to burn a pallet factory. This happened between broadway and 8th street east near sonoma. Sparks were seen coming from a tow truck in the area although its not clear whether thats what started the fire, more than 40 acres burned and this is cell phone video shot by a firefighter. It shows a propane tank that exploded as he was battling the flames. No one was injured. Once it got into the pallets, it was an intensive firefight that was quite difficult. Tomorrow he will address the nation. In the meantime, syrian president bashar assad spoke to cbs this morning anchor charlie rose. Reporter Susan Mcginnis has more on this exclusive interview. Reporter syrian president bashar assad tells cbs this mornings charlie rose the u. S. Has no proof his government launched the chemical weapons attack the u. S. Says killed more than 1400 people. He basically says if in fact the administration has evidence, then they should show that evidence. Reporter assad suggested rebel forces were responsible. The white house says assads troops are the only ones capable of pulling off such an attack. Do we have a picture or do we have irrefutable beyond reasonable doubt evidence . This is not a court of law. And intelligence does not work that way. So what we do know and what we know the common sense test says he is responsible for this. He should be held to account. Reporter but the commonsense test isnt good enough for many here on capitol hill. Congress is set to vote wednesday on the military strike on syria and many believe the votes will not be there. The evidence is not as strong as the Public Statement that the president and his administration have been making. I would also add that the briefings havent given me comfort. The briefings have actually made me more skeptical about the situation. Reporter many congressmen say their constituents nothing to do the with civil war in syria and rand paul is likely to filibuster the bill. I will insist that i get an amendment and my amendment will say that the vote is binding, that the president cannot if we vote him down, decide to go to war anyway. Reporter the president has been pushing senators to support the resolution. He attended a private dinner with a group of senators last night and will visit capitol hill tomorrow. In washington, Susan Mcginnis, kpix 5. Bashar assad also told charlie rose syria will retaliate if the u. S. Attacks. You can see more of that interview on cbs this morning this morning starting at 7 00 right here on kpix 5. Congress gets back to work today after a fiveweek summer recess. The first order of business will be a resolution authorizing the president to use force in syria. Kpix 5s anne makovec explains how its leaving congressmen in a tough position. Reporter the possibility of u. S. Airstrikes against the Syrian Government has our government wringing its hands. This has been our National Security [ indiscernible ] reporter but according to the latest gallup poll just 36 of americans approve of air strikes on syria. East bay congressman Eric Swalwell spoke on kpix 5 sunday morning. My constituents across the board its a firm solid no, why now . How is this in americas best interests . Reporter he is a democrat a group that normally sticks with House Minority leader nancy pelosi and according to our political insiders you dont want to go against your boss especially when your boss raises millions for you. Reporter she has been writing letters to the bay area congressional delegation asking their opinion on syria while making it clear that she supports the president. Thats the soft arm. Thats not the full arms width. The fact that she is asking for your opinion when you know her opinion, thats an arm twist. Reporter most of our representatives arent buying it. The issue isnt just whether chemical weapons have been used. Im inclined to believe that they were. The question is, what should the United States do . And where does that lead . Reporter president obama will be making his case to congress and the American People this week. Im glad that he is going to make the speech. I think its necessary. And im proud of his courage. Reporter although a lot of minds appear to be made up. I think force should be the last option after you exhaust all other remedies and what i want to find out, is there anything else we can do before force . Reporter president obama has acknowledged he may fail to sway the American Public on this issue but so far he has refused to say whether or not he would act unilaterally. In the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5. According to the latest gallup poll just 36 of americans are in favor of air strikes on syria. President obama will address the nation tomorrow night. You can see that speech at 6 00 right here on kpix 5. 4 40. Lawrence karnow doing something we all love to do. Sleeping in . [ laughter ] thats it. You get to sleep in until 2 00 in the morning. Thats not sleeping in. Its not unless youre a raccoon and then you got a good nights sleep. But we digress. Lets talk about the conditions affecting that fire up at mount diablo. Winds are a big factor and so is humidity and temperatures and were at least getting a boost from the wind direction because right now they are fairly calm throughout the bay area. Velocity is fairly low. Near the fire in concord they are only out of the north about 3 miles an hour westsouthwest at vallejo and calm elsewhere. Of course, this will change during the day. Futurecast winds show they are going to be picking up a little bit later in the day they are not easterly winds from a dry direction so it gives the firefighters a boost in that direction.
