More on protest problems in downtown oakland. [ yelling ] reporter within hours thousands of marchers had taken to downtown oakland. They stormed interstate 880 marching against traffic bringing cars to a stand still. Police moved in making several arrests. They forced protestors off the freeway but outnumbered, they were forced to call in Highway Patrol and Alameda County sheriffs deputies. Their reactions a far cry from the first night of protests. We have learned there were only eight officers on the streets in downtown oakland saturday when vandals broke off from a larger protest, smashed windows and set trash on fire in the streets. Were tired of people from mostly it seems like people from outside of the city just trashing the downtown every time they feel like they want to say something. Reporter we saw the Oakland Police chief patrolling the protests himself by bicycle. He admitted police were blindsided by the verdict. They didnt make one arrest that night. We werent expecting a verdict until this week. So on that short notice, we werent able to bring in additional staffing for saturday night. Reporter whent said he upped the number of officers last night and cut the amount of vandalism drastically. Tonight he hopes to do the same. Hopefully, were able to be successful tonight as we were last night. Reporter christin ayers, kpix 5. In l. A. , hundreds of demonstrators started trash fires, jumped on cars, bashed windows and vandalized their way through city streets. A photographer for our sister station kcbs was attacked and hurt so badly he is in the hospital. 13 people were arrested overnight in los angeles. For the first time we are hearing from one of the jurors in the George Zimmerman trial. She says the verdict came down to what happened in the final few seconds right before Trayvon Martin was shot. Because of the heat of the moment and stand your ground. He had a right to defend himself. He felt threatened, his life was going to be taken away from him or he was going to have bodily harm, he had a right. So even though if he had gotten out of the car and followed Trayvon Martin that didnt matter. In the deliberations what mattered was the final seconds, minutes, when there was an altercation and whether or not what the most important thing was whether or not George Zimmerman felt his life was in danger. Thats how we read the law. Thats how we got to the point of everybody being not guilty. Apparently, coming to that decision was not very easy. I want people to know that we put everything into everything to get this verdict. [ crying ] we didnt just go in there, uhm, to say, were going to come in here and just do guilty, not guilty. We thought about it for hours and cried over it afterwards. [ pause ] i dont think any of us could ever do anything like that ever again. The juror says she believes zimmermans heart was in the right place that night but it all just went terribly wrong. The juror also said she felt a key prosecution witness was not credible. That witness Rachel Jeantel testified about the phone conversation she had with Trayvon Martin moments before he was shot. Jeantel also talked about saturdays verdict. When that verdict came back as not guilty, were you shocked and surprised . What were you feeling . You want me to be synonymous. Yeah, be honest. I was sleeping. I was laying down because i knew what it was. Reporter what do you mean, you knew what it was . I had a feeling. [ pause ] i was laying in my room. My aunt just came in my room and bust outcrying and say, we aint getting no justice. Just like we aint getting no justice. We just lost another child. We just lost trayvon again. Some analysts say her testimony hurt the prosecutions case. She says she did her part and what other people say about her will not bring her down. The bitter divide over the zimmerman trial played a role in a shocking attack on a veteran musician as he performed here in hayward. Kpix 5s sharon chin spoke with singer Lester Chambers who is now recovering from injuries at his petaluma home. In addition to battery, the Chambers Family hopes the suspect will be charged with a hate crime as soon as today. Hayward police will turn the case over to the Alameda CountyDistrict Attorney who will then decide on the charges. A caltrans spokesman is apologizing for accidentally e mailing this photo to the media. It shows the tv character dexter a serial killer reading about the zimmerman verdict. Caltrans released a statement yesterday saying the agency, quote, has a statewide policy that prohibits the use of state email for personal communications. Apple says it will cooperate with the investigation. A rare beaver that made a home along san joses Guadalupe River is now in danger. Reporter they knew something was wrong when a wildlife camera captured the beaver waddelling around. Look closely on her left side and you will see something attached to her body. She had a large protrusion out of her side, almost looks like a stick. And she was limping when she was walking. Reporter the next morning the branch had fallen off but now you can see it clearly. She had a plastic packing strap constricted around her waist. Reporter greg with the urban Wildlife Research project has been using hidden cameras to shoot video of the beavers since they were discovered in march. Until these guys, beavers hadnt been seen in this part of san jose since the gold rush era. A team of wildlife experts has been searching the Guadalupe River setting traps and using thermal cameras. If the plastic strap stays on, one of the rivers first beavers in 150 years will likely survive just a little while longer. Is that a propane tank . It is. Thats not an uncommon sight.
